Dear Doris and other Listers! Just a comment on that car of mine. I had a white one, bought it in Hillsboro, ND for $200 - drove it for nine weeks 13.500 miles between Culver, IN and Lincoln City, OR, north to southern SK and south to Lincoln NE, and sold it again in Minneapolis, MN for $150. I heard it was later driven in AZ where it was wrecked! But back to our favorite activity, genealogy! I am also hoping for more facts to show up about Nels cowboy Kins! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. I have a question: Did Lars Oyane "hijack" The Norway List? It seems like that's the only chatter on this list any more. Have a nice day! Clark in Japan
Yvonne, can you point out for me some information about her birth? When and where? What was her parents name? Maybe it would be possible to find obituaries here in Norway that will tell someting? Lisbeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yvonne Morehouse via" <norway@rootsweb.com> Thanks, Barbara. Your email about Anna Hultgren stirred up some memories. The quoted paragraph below was in my rat pack genealogy file from some years back... "The Vang migration records show that she [Anna] left Vang for Voss in January of 1881 to get married. Yvonne and her sources believe that Anna died after she and her children arrived in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, on May 12, 1890. Peter arrived in Quebec on Aug 10, 1889. Peter [and maybe Anna and the kids] went on to Aberdeen, South Dakota. Per and Anna's children are Ole, Anton, Mary/Stina, Anna Emily and Amandus. Son Amandus' 1914 obituary identifies his mother as Anna Ellestad. Thanks for clues, ideas which hopefully will enable someone to find Anna after all of these years. Dear Barbara, Thelma, Doris, Kathy and other Listers! Thank you all very very much for your messages in regard to my Norwegian cowboy Nels Kins! Now I have a better "image:" of what he did and where they lived, and if I am not entirely mistaken, there were still "truck farmers" along the Columbia River when I in my "youth" drove past there in 1973 with my '63 Plymouth Fury with pushbutton automatic! It was interesting also to see from Nels' obituary which Thelma came up with, that he had lived in Miami, OK for 25 years! That suggests he had left Oregon several years before his wife died, and already then he was a man with one leg and blind on one eye! No wonder he spent so many years at the nursing home in Miami, OK! Still I am "hunting" for a marriage date for Nels and Alma. We must assume they did get married somewhere, but is it possible to find out? Thanks again for your great information so far! You are just a wonderful team of researchers, and I love you all! Is Lief Reistad still on this list. If so would you contact me please. Have a question about the church you wrote me earlier that my grandmother was one of the first babies baptized there after the church was constructed in 1879. Think you said you attended that church. My sister and I plan to be in Norway this June and would love to see this church. Nadine Snider --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Vi elsker deg også, Lars! I will echo Reina and others: Don't go anywhere! You have some interesting cases, and it's fun to read some of the info, so I'm learning things just seeing what people come up with because I haven't had any occasion to do research in many of the states or local regions where others have found data, so it's nice to know how much data is out there..., and gather new links to databases to keep in my favorites file in case I need them at some point. I've been keeping irregular hours for a while, and what research I've been doing has detoured in other directions, but it's still always fun to catch up with the latest research projects you and others are doing. Norway Listers have always been my genealogy network of choice, so I would be quite heartbroken if all research moved over to Facebook (as I've said before, I'm not a member; I just can't give up that much privacy). I've long considered Norway Listers as friends..., so in all sincerity, I say: Være godt, kjære venner. Med vennlig hilsen, Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: Lars E. Lars, Yes, there would have been truck farmers when you took your trip through the Columbia River Gorge. I had a 63 Plymouth Fury too. Mine was red and white, and I loved that car! I sold it about 1970, because my then-husband wanted a VW bug. The Fury had never caused me any trouble at all, so I was reluctant to give it up. Hope someone will find you a marriage license for Nels and Alma, and that missing census too. That might help pin down the date. Doris On Fri, Mar 6, 2015 at 3:57 PM, Lars E. My uncle was a truck farmer. He had a nice fruit tree orchard and a small hobby farm. He had permits to be able to set up his truck and a produce stand by the side of a road in order to sell his fruits and vegetables to the public. Yvonne, The Anna Hultgren that Jerrald located at Union Creek, So. Dak. Find A Grave Memorial# 31241029, was "Monsdtr." and born Dec 1851. John Per Hultgren, Find A Grave Memorial# 31241285 was born Dec 1840 in Sweden. Although familiar with the Hultgren family, I did not know Anna or John Per. (I lived in that area from 1935 to 1953) Most likely not the family you are searching for. Jerry C. On Mar 6, 2015, at 11:34 AM, Yvonne Morehouse via wrote: > Thanks, Barbara. Thanks, Barbara. Called Anna Olson in her son Anton’s death certificate, the informant for which was her husband, and Anton’s father Peter Hultgren of Clarissa." So, to my way of thinking, there is only about a 3-year period in which to search for Anna because husband Per Hultgren arrives in Quebec in August 1889 and marries his second wife, Amanda Roxstrom, on 29 Jan 1892 in Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota. I checked Find A Grave for an Anna Olson (and Anna Hultgren) who died before 1892. I found one death for an Anna Olson b. 1854 and died in 1893. This lady is buried at Eagle Lake Cemetery, Battle Lake, Minnesota. [But, I don't think this is Per's first wife because by 1983 Per had remarried.] Per and Anna's children are Ole, Anton, Mary/Stina, Anna Emily and Amandus. Son Amandus' 1914 obituary identifies his mother as Anna Ellestad. Thanks for clues, ideas which hopefully will enable someone to find Anna after all of these years. Yvonne

Lars, I should note that Hood River, OR was, and is, well known for its fertile soil, making it excellent for truck farming and orchards. It sits in the shadow of Mt. Hood, one of the chain of dormant volcanoes that runs through the Cascade Range from Canada down to N. Calif. (actually, none of them are truly dormant, as we learned in 1980 when Mt. St. Helens, 100 miles or so due North of Mt. Hood, had a dramatic explosion; it's still bubbling!). Dear Lars, A truck farmer is someone who raises vegetables and fruit in large quantities and sells them. All the best Sincerely, Barbara in MA On 3/6/2015 10:06 AM, Lars E. Dear Listers, I have another challenge for you today which I have tried to solve for years. Maybe now with help of newspaper articles? Nels N. KINS born Aug. 17, 1880 in Buffalo Co., WI died Jan. 26, 1970 at Miami, Ottawa Co., OK Nels and his younger brother Albert (1882-1965) left the home farm in Buffalo Co., WI shortly after 1900 to work as cowboys for a wealthy rancher in Idaho named Samuel Dyer. Albert later moved on tom California, but Nels fell in love with Samuel Dyer's foster daughter or niece: Alma V. DYER born Oct. 17, 1866 in Idaho Co., ID died May 5, 1949 at Hood River, OR They were (of course) NOT given the permission to marry, so they "ran off", presumably to Oregon where they must have married (secretly) about 1908. The 1910 census shows Nels Kins as a married farmer residing along in a hotel in Portland, OR. The 1917 city directory for The Dalles, Wasco Co., OR shows Nels as a rancher The 1918 WW1 draft record shows Nels Kins as a model laundry engineer(!) residing at The Dalles, Wasco Co., OR The 1920 city directory for The Dalles, Wasco Co., OR shows Nels as a machinist I don't find them in the 1920 census. The 1925 city directory for The Dalles, Wasco Co., OR shows Nels as a plumber The 1930 census shows Nels and Alma as "truck farmers" residing at Columbia River Highway, Hood River Co., OR The 1936 city directory for The Dalles, Wasco Co., OR shows Nels as a laborer The 1940 census shows N. N.Kens and Alma as farmers at Odell, Hood River Co., OR The 1942 WW2 draft record shows Nels Kins as a high way worker in Good River Co., OR The 1951 death certificate for Alma Kins says they had resided since 1941 at Viento, Hood River Co., OR Then Nels Kins seems to completely "disappear", and nobody in the family knows what he did, until I discovered in the SSDI having died at Miami, Ottawa Co., OK in 1970, almost 90 years of age. A number of years ago I talked to the Funeral Director at Miami, OK who had taken care of Nels' funeral. His first question to me was whether I was a relative and would pay for the funeral! Then he told me that Nels had resided at the Heritage House nursing home at Miami, OK for a number of years, and when he died, he was buried in the Indian cemetery outside of town! An interesting side note: The Funeral Director remembered Nels arriving at Miami from "nowhere". He had only one foot and was blind on one eye and never told anyone about his background! My main source of information about Nels and his early days came from a niece in California whi had it from her father Albert, so I guess it should be fairly accurate. And my biography of Nels Kins isn't bad at all, but I am always looking for that little "extra" about this fascinating character of the West! And in particular I would like to add: ** Date and place of Nels' marriage to Alma Dyer? ** Alma's middle name? ** What did Nels Kins actually do for a living after he and Alma ran away from Idaho? What's a "truck farmer"? ** Can they be found in the 1920 census? Maybe there are newspaper articles available about this guy? Thanks a million in advance for any assistance you can give me in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
She would have been Olsdtr, not Olson. Sorry about that. Hi Yvonne, Did she use Hultgren when she left Norway? Before she left? I think of my grandfather whose father was Karlsen and my grandfather later took the name of his mother, Michelsen, booked passage as Karlsen and when he arrived he waas back to Michelsen. Your Anna was born before a "family" name was required and she could have taken her father's name - say he was Ole Larsen - and she could have been named Anna Olson, his father would have been named Lars, and when married she could have kept her name or adopted his. Do you have the marriage information? The ship passenger list? I hope this helps a little.:} Barbara in MA (also snowed and iced in but have been for 2 months!)
