Dear Brenda, Gwen, Harold and other Listers! Thank you very much for your latest comments on this topic, and in particular was I happy to receive Chris Hill's obituary! Unfortunately, Chris' obituary has no mention of brothers or sisters, so he was probably the last sibling to die...! As far as the fire in Cook Co.., IL is concerned, I believe that was in 1871, when a number of vital records shall have been destroyed. After that time I believe that most everything has been kept, although many of the records we look for just cannot be found! Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Dear Mark and other Listers! Mark, I have found something very interesting in the WW1 draft record system which makes me wonder whether that divorce "debate" from Portland, OR could be a year or more off? Emery Elsworth Webber's WW1 draft record from 1918 shows him as being unmarried and a ship yard worker, and his closest relative was his mother Ella Webber! Why would he be accused by Mathilda for NOT beig a ship yard worker, when he already was one? Then I found this in the WW1 draft records: John William ANDERSON, born Aug. 4, 1877, a truck driver residing on 492 1/2 E. Burnside in Portland, OR with nearest relative MATILDA ANDERSON, same address. The card is signed Sep. 12, 1918 and has an extra notation with a new address: 2957 Charles street, Seattle, WA! John's age is a perfect "match" with Mathilda's 4th husband, and they did move to Seattle, WA, so I believe this is the one we want! But then, Emery and Mathilda's divorce must have occurred BEFORE Sep of 1918. Next question: Can John and Mathilda's marriage be found in Oregon? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Mar 7, 2015, at 1:20 PM, Lars E. Dear Brenda and other Listers! Thank you very much for your latest comment, Brenda! I am fully aware that the most common way to obtain obituaries is contacting the various local libraries or historical societies, which I will consequently do, if the obituaries cannot be obtained in other ways. However, with so many online searchable newspapers I was thinking, MAYBE some of these obituaries can be found in a much easier - and faster - way... Dear Listers! To find the whereabouts and destiny of this Mary Johnson is probably one of the "toughest" tasks that remain in my County History project, but how do we go about to find her? One way is to check for example the 1900 census looking for Mar* born in Norway 1865 +- 2 years, emigrated 1885 +- 2 years, but this turns up numerous alternatives which need to be studied... Another way might be to find obituaries for all of her older siblings, hoping that at least ONE of these obituaries lists surviving siblings: * Hans J. URNESS, died at Colfax. I have a newspapers.com account and quick lookups for the name, year and state did not provide obits.
The most common way that I find aUS obit is thru the local library where the person died or lived most of their life. I find their website and contact them. -----Original Message----- From: norway-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:norway-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lars E. I’m aware that I can’t send pictures to this address, so I included the link. Hopefully that will work. I get an update monthly from the Norweigan Embassy. The headline said Seattle, but as I read further, I noticed he’s going to Tacoma, to PLU, Pacific Lutheran, to get an honorary doctorate. I was there 15 years ago when my niece graduated and it was announced that she had won a Fulbright to study at the U of Oslo.............. She had a minor in Norwegian and had already spent a semester in Oslo during her Junior year. I was lucky enough to be able to take my mother to visit her while she was in Oslo, and we spent two weeks exploring the country. I’m going to send the picture to the pixandscan site. Hello Bev, Barbara and all, I agree with you both, Lars asks for assistance from those more familiar with some aspects of his research. Especially from those living in countries where the families he is researching settled. I live in Australia and though archives, libraries and government agencies worldwide are usually the custodians of historical documents, free access to the information they hold differs greatly. It is always refreshing to read how the "A" team on this list tackle the brick walls faced by Lars and many of us from time to time. Requesting information from such a variety of sources and the replies posted often gives clues to locating more obscure records we may never have thought to use. We can all learn something from every Q & A. Lars keeps the list active, educational and friendly. The Bothell, Washington, Sons of Norway Lodge will be holding their annual Heritage Day on March 14. I will be traveling up there to help people with genealogy, and to see old friends and hopefully make some new friends. If you are there, I hope you will drop by and say hello. More information on the event can be found on the Bothell Sons of Norway website. It is a fun event. Greg Holter
For my part, I've been pretty busy with other things lately, including some non-Norwegian genealogy. But I will be back soon with some questions -- I'm currently helping a friend with her Norwegian ancestry and there are some areas with which I am not familiar that I will need help. (I have already gotten some offlist from Jim Wiborg, who has some of the bygdebøker I need -- tusen takk to Jim.) I am also struggling off and on with a translation and will need some help with that. It includes quoted language from earlier times. I have also tried to contribute to others (such as Lars) in areas where I have specific knowledge. But others are often able to answer sooner than I get back to my email. Greg Holter From: C&M Pederson via <norway@rootsweb.com> To: Lars E. Dear Listers, This is one of the last great discoveries which our dear Daraleen provided for me in the fall of 2011, and the topic figured on the NORWAY list about the same time, but the "Brick Wall" remained unsolved. Now, with the new wonderful newspaper databases, maybe this problem can also be solved? Mathilda Christianson was born in Hof, Hedmark Nov. 23, 1874, emigrated in 1887 from Christiania She married 1st time in Grand Forks, ND Nov. 28, 1891 to Christopher J. Bjornthun, born in Hafslo May 26, 1861, emigrated 1879, lived at Grand Forks, ND where he died Mar. 5, 1894. She married 2nd time in Grand Forks, ND Mar. 5, 1903 to Mathias Martinson, born in Vardal Co., Norway Nov. 4, 1864, emigrated in 1884, lived at Grand Forks, ND, but were divorced prior to 1910. Then Mathilda "went west", and on Sep. 29, 1913 at Vancouver, WA ("of Multnomah Co., OR") she married 3rd time to one E. Ellsworth "of Multnomah Co., OR, aged 38, born MN by parents Connord Ellsworth, born Germany, and ..... Beach, born MN" Despite several attempts this E. Ellsworth has not been possible to identify. However, the marriage ended within few years, as the 1920 census shows Mathilda married to her 4th husband, J(ohn) W(illiam) Anderson, a sailmaker, aged 42 (born 1877), emigrated 1887 and boarding on 30 Angeline streeet in Seattle, WA. Mathilda Anderson died in Seattle, WA May 31, 1927 and was buried in a single grave at Forest Lawn cemetery. My main problem is to identify Mathilda's latest two husbands, * E. Ellsworth, and * John W. Anderson and, not to forget, John's marriage to Mathilda. Now I hope that these names will show up in newspaper articles between Portland, OR and Seattle, WA? Every little "bit and piece" would be more than welcome! Thanks a million to all of you wonderful listers who have access to the adequate newspaper databases and who is willing to search for these individuals for me? Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Greg, wish I could be there...a trip to the northwest is always welcome. There really aren't many Norwegians in Kentucky. Enjoy the day, Carol from Kentucky (but a Washingtonian at heart) -----Original Message----- From: Gregory Holter via <norway@rootsweb.com> To: Norway List <norway@rootsweb.com> Sent: Fri, Mar 6, 2015 8:37 pm Subject: [NOR] Heritage Day coming up at Bothell Sons of Norway on Saturday, March 14 The Bothell, Washington, Sons of Norway Lodge will be holding their annual Heritage Day on March 14. I will be traveling up there to help people with genealogy, and to see old friends and hopefully make some new friends. If you are there, I hope you will drop by and say hello. More information on the event can be found on the Bothell Sons of Norway website. It is a fun event.
