Her name was Amelia Jacobson. She married John Risch in 1909? in Lisbon, North Dakota, according to his obituary. She was reportedly born Feb. 19, 1988 in the Bergen area. A Norwegian relative of mine did some searching, but did not find a birth announcement for her and thinks she was probably born in a surrounding village. Her father’s name was Jacob Jacobson, but no one seems to know what her mother’s name was. She reportedly had some brothers: John, Martin and Olaf that also went to the USA in about 1905, but we think brothers Ludwig and Mons (or Muntz) stayed in Norway or possibly moved to Sweden. This is based on another relative’s research and I cannot confirm. I do know she died September 15, 1941 in Bismarck, North Dakota, of diabetes and is buried in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bismarck. The family was very poor. There are no markers on the grandparents graves. We plan to remedy now that we know where they are. Amelia had seven children: Arthur, Elizabeth, Robert, Phillip, Lynn, John Jr. (my husband’s dad) and Jacob. They are all dead. I did contact two of Arthur’s children, but they didn’t know too much. Arthur’s father was reportedly an Arthur (Crowder?). I don’t believe Amelia and Mr. Crowder were married. I am told Mr. Crowder was kicked in the head by a horse and died. I did not find records at Ellis Island as to when Amelia came to USA. I have found conflicting information concerning when she came to the USA, based on the U.S. Census information that I have found. While I was looking at the archives I ran across a message from Jon Raymond. It occurred to me that I had not seen anything from Jon for a long time. Jon suggested Norway-L to me way back when I was trying to get started with Norwegian research. I am wondering if I missed any news about Jon? Does anyone know what or how he is doing these days? I cleaned up the links below that had run into each other; I hope it works. Even the 1865 Census isn't much help. It only lists the initials. http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/bosted_land/bf01038384002214 For the birth record, I'm seeing either Gisleaw or Gisleave (I'm leaning toward the latter after enlarging the image to 150%). Death record spelling? Anyone's guess. Gisle__. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hello Kathi I think if you read this group of messages you will find your Jacobson family roots http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NORWAY/2004-01/1074122220 here is a quote that indicates "Amalia" as a sister that should catch your interest in addition to the names of Olaf in Cando and John in Sand Point: "... Your web site notes that in 1910 Amalia was going to Cando to visit her brother Olief and he married a Holien girl. Here are some Holien names in Cando you might want to contact. Maybe you'll have to go on a tangent for the Holien family. Dan Holien (616 5th Ave, Cando, ND 58324, phone 701/968-3888), Duane Holien (303 7th Ave, Cando, ND 58324, phone 701/968-3621) and D.R. Holien (7165 62nd Ave NE, Cando, ND 58324, phone 701/968-3556). " and here is a cached version of Darren's website (which is no longer online) http://web.archive.org/web/20040221173954/http://www.dypevag.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/US.htm there are a lot of similarities between his information and Amelia's obituary. and here are quotes from it (perhaps other listers can help with the Norway part) " .... Dear Sherrie, Doris and other Listers! This afternoon I called the City of Montrose, CO, and I received the following information: * Charles M. Ryan was buried on May 31, 1925 * Clara A. Ryan was buried on Aug. 21, 1934 Maybe with this information is it possible to find obituaries or at least death notices for them? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Bismarck Tribune 15 September 1941 page 3 Mrs John Risch Dies here Monday Mrs John Risch, 53, 222 Thayer Ave died in a local hospital Monday at 9:30 am of diabetes. She had been confined to bed at home one month and had been iling for five years. She entered the hospital Sunday at 7:10 pm. She was born in Bergen, Norway on Feb 19, 1888 and came with her parents to Grand Forks county, ND when she was 18 years old. The family moved to Lisbon two years later. On Feb 10 1911 she was married to John Risch at Lisbon. In 1913 the couple moved to Burleigh county where they began farming in Norton township. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Bismarck. Besides her husband she leaves seven children, Mrs Lee Morgan, Arthur, Robert, Philip, Lynn, John and Jacob, all of near Bismarck. She also leaves the following brothers and sisters, Ludwig and Mons Jacobson living in Norway, a married sister living in Sweden, and Olaf, Cando, ND; Martin, Plaza and John of Sand Point, Ida. Funeral services have not been arranged. The body is at the Calman funeral home Kathi wrote ..... Her husband died Oct. 27, 1960. Any advice that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Looking for information on Amelia Jacobson Risch I am looking to find more information about my husband’s Norwegian grandmother and if she has any relatives still in Norway. Mr. Risch was born in Chicago, Illinois. Kathleen Risch 701.223.8801 - home ker@bis.midco.net
Dear Mark and other Listers! Thank you very much, Mark, for your latest message in regard to Mike Shuster! I am unable to reed all of the page describing him, but I found him in the WW1 draft records as well as in census records from 1910 and 1920. It appears he had a brother Joe Shuster, and they were born in AUSTRIA. And this Mike was employed by Wyoming Coal Company! The age is close, but unless you have information about him identifying him as being born in MN to Prussian father and Norwegian mother, I am afraid this has to be a different Mike...? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. The book says that the Wyoming Coal Company’s mine is located in Rock Springs. Wyoming has online newspapers for this time period and city. http://newspapers.wyo.gov
