    3. Dear Lars, Morton immediately suggested "salt", Morton Salt. I googled and found that a J. Stirling Morton was founder of the the Morton Salt company. That lead me back top Sterling and looked that up and in with that the list , was Morton Salt. Morton salt was in Chicago. Stargill Company now owns Sterling, I think.:} I don't know if this could be a connection or not or if you had already seen it and ruled it out. Sincerely Barbara in MA On 4/2/2015 1:38 PM, Lars E. 3. Lars, I found this lawsuit that mentions Roman Oil Portrait Co. as one of the competitors. I didn't read the whole lawsuit, but it sounds like they "colorized" black and white photographic portraits. http://leagle.com/decision/19247634F2d759_1443.xml/CHICAGO%20PORTRAIT%20CO.%20v.%20FEDERAL%20TRADE%20COMMISSION The Chicago Portrait Company The company, the largest concern of its kind in the United States, for more than 30 years has been engaged in taking orders for and making portraits of parents and other near relatives of its customers by coloring and finishing photographs enlarged from old photographs furnished by the customers. In the years 1919 to 1921, it did a business annually of from $2,500,000 to $4,000,000; the smallest business being in 1921. It had annually 250,000 to 300,000 customers, some in every state. Among its competitors are the Syracuse Portrait Company, of Syracuse, N. Y., and the Roman Oil Portrait Company, the Commercial Portrait Company, the Ætna Copying Company, and the Pacific Portrait Company, all of Chicago, two or more of which do similar business along similar lines in the various states of the United States." If he was a traveling salesman, he may not have been counted in the census. My grandfather was skipped in 1930 and 1940. He had to be somewhere, but I assume he was living in hotels and didn't have a permanent address. I would have expected the hotel to show records for the census date, but apparently that didn't happen. Annette On 4/2/15, Lars E. 1. [NOR] Myron Frances Morgan and his marriage about 1907 - Northern Illinois? - Newspaper announcement?

    3. Dear Listers, I have searched for this marriage "all over", but no way; I just cannot find it! Myron Frances MORGAN, born Jan. 5, 1883 in Anoka Co., MN, and Emma Louise BUEHLER, born Nov. 23, 1883 in Taylor Co., WI The 1910 census for Rockford, Winnebago Co., IL shows they had been married for 3 years! No marriage record has been found in MN, in WI or in Winnebago Co., IL. I suspect they may have married in a different County in Northern Illinois, but which? Can possibly a NEWSPAPER ANNOUNCEMENT of this marriage about 1907 be located? Thanks a million for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

    1. [NOR] John Silvan Morgan (1881-1962) - photographer MN-WI-IN-CA - newspaper items?
    2. Lars E. Oyane via
    3. Dear Listers, I have another apparently "hopeless brick wall" to share with you today. I have a feeling I have tried everything, but still it is a big "mystery" where this gentleman resided and what he did between 1905 and 1940, when he shows up in Los Angeles, CA? John Silvan MORGAN born July 10, 1881 in St. Paul, Ramsey Co., MN son of Frank M. Morgan (1852-1929) and his 1st wife Severina "Susie" Peterson (Ovrebo) (1858-1887) John grew up with father and stepmother in Anoka Co., MN moving about 1903 to Minneapolis, MN. The last time I see John living "at home" is in the 1905 census for Minneapolis, MN. He does NOT show in any Minneapolis, MN city directories between 1906 and 1912! The next note I have on him is from 1916 when he supposedly resided at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., IN, but I have no source for this information, and he does not appear in the Terre Haute , IN city directory for 1915. The WW1 draft record from Sep. 1918 shows him with address c/o Arlington Hotel, Marinette, Marinette Co., WI with a brother Myron Morgan of St. Paul, MN as his "nearest" relative! His occupation was a salesman for Roman Oil Portrait Co. on 1554 Ogden Ave., Chicago, IL Then he shows up in the 1940 census for Los Angeles, CA residing on 432 W 88th street, where he remained until he died on July 7, 1962. In 1940 he's called a peddler in dried fruit (the WW2 draft says he worked for Sterling Food Products), but when he died in 1962 it says about him that he had been a photographer for 50 years and a resident of Los Angeles Co., CA since 1941! Marital status in 1940 is given as married, which is over-lined and replaced by single. In 1962 at the time of his death it says he was divorced! Like everyone else on the same census page he lived at the same place in 1935! In 1940 he lived at this address with a cousin Julia Sewell. She is later referred to as Julia Marguerite Morgan, born in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO Sep. 1, 1905. She was indeed a 1st cousin of John's, and she died "single" in South Gate, CA Dec. 5, 1968. Julia's death certificate shows she had resided in CA since 1928, and she had been a telephone company accountant for 30 years. She was single both in 1940 and when she died, although in the 1930 census she shows up as married since 1928 to Frank Sewell, born in NH 1896! Many years ago I talked to a niece of John's in Minneapolis, MN, and she told me that John came from California to visit in Minneapolis, MN some time in the 1950's, and he "dragged this woman along with him". Obviously she wasn't very "welcome"... They apparently lived in some kind of a "common-law" union! An online family tree shows a "possible" discovery of John in the 1910 census for Minneapolis, MN, born in MN about 1884 with both parents born in MN, married to a Jennia and with a son Frank, 4 months old. He was a salesman. And there is also a single salesman Johnnie Morgan in St. Paul, MN in 1920, born in MN 1881 with parents born in IL and WI. "Our" John Silvan Morgan's parents were born in Ohio and Norway, and I am not too sure that these census entries are really for "our" John! I wish to "narrow down" my questions to the following: * Does anyone recognize the company name Roman Oil Portrait Co. on 1554 Ogden Ave., Chicago, IL for which John was a salesman in 1918? * How about the company Sterling Food Products which employed John in 1942? * John Silvan Morgan appears to have acted more-or-less like a "travelling salesman", and I feel he must have travelled between Indiana and Minnesota until finally removing to California. Then there is a question, can NEWSPAPER ITEMS be found to tell us more about him, about his marriage and professional activities? Thanks a million in advance for any suggestions that can help us locate more facts about John Silvan Morgan! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

    3. Lars, There is a list for Cook Co, IL, which includes Chicago. It's almost as active and helpful as the Norway list, and maybe some of our listers are on it and can help with the Roman Oil Portrait Co. Finding the years it was active might help find when your John Silvan Morgan worked for them. Permanent sidelenke: www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9242&idx_id=9242&uid=ny&idx_side=-74 The age and farm name agrees with the marriage record already found - Marith was 26 in April and will be 27 in the fall. There are 4 other children of this couple in FamilySearch: Tore - 9 Dec 1812 Synne - 26 Aug 1814 Peder - 22 Sep 1817 Sigrie - 5 May 1821 Soldier Lars Olsen Wiger married maiden Rønnoug Pedersdatter Husum 6 Nov 1812 Kildeinformasjon: Oppland fylke, Lom, Ministerialbok nr. 3 (1801-1825), Ekteviede 1813, side 108. Permanent sidelenke: www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9242&idx_id=9242&uid=ny&idx_side=-97 It gets tricky to get back the next generation... There are no ages given or parents in the marriage record and we have a Lars Olsen - very common. Just because Rønnaug Pedersdatter had children as late as 1824 I assume that she is the 8 yr old in the 1801 census. There are only 3 candidates and the other two are 34 yrs old and 41 yrs old. But keep in mind there is an assumption here and this 8 yr old Rønoug does not live on Husum at this time... Her mother's name is Synneve Nielsdatter which works for her child born 1814 And her brother's name is Thorø <http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=20&filnamn=f18010514&gardpostnr=1&personpostnr=50&merk=50#ovre> There are some databases for Lom and in konfirmerte 1800-1815 I find: Lars Olsen Viger confirmed 15 Nov 1801 so assume he is roughly 14 at that time. He should be born around 1785-1787 is my guess. No age or parents on this image again :-( Again from transcribed databases ... Christened in Lom 1749-1801: There was a Lars Olsen christened 26 Mar 1786 Parents Ole Larsen and Sigrj Hansdatter SørViger Lots of guesses here... 3. Oh, yes, - - using Google translate - - many words can be found by switching from "Norwegian to English" to "Danish to English" Note the discussion on housekeeper now in progress - it's a warning that while we may be able to translate, we sometimes miss the meaning because we "foreigners" don't know the context of the language, the place (especially dialects), time (words changed over time), and usage. 3. Two I use and have goodly amount of success : Haugen, Einar. Norwegian English Dictionary (Norsk Engelsk Ordbok), Universitetsforlate / University of Wisconsin Press, 1965, 1974 for general dictionary translation. He also gives examples of usage. Put the following genealogy dictionary on your "Favorites" bar : Otto Jørgensen's Norwegian-American Dictionary (http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm) For the Census, I found "Census abbreviations used in the on-line 1865-1900 Census Records" at http://draug.rhd.isv.uit.no/histform/appendix.htm When really stumped, search through the Rootsweb lists - many terms have already been defined and posted. 3. Hei, Kathy. Welcome to one of the best lists on the Internet! By a stroke of luck, I have found the 02 April 1851 marriage record for Lars Pedersen (24 years old) and Berte Olsdatter (27.5 years old). ENTRY #17 shows Lars living at Nordlien under Christiansborg and Berte at ?Lillekolaasen? (better eyes may get a better reading.) His father is Peder Larsen and her father is Ole Olsen. Hedmark county, Ringsaker, Parish register (official) nr. 9 (1850-1860), Marriage records 1851, page 294. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8843&idx_id=8843&uid=ny&idx_side=-265 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070119310268.jpg MATHEAS LARSDATTER was born 14 July / baptized 24 July 1859 at Christiansborg Ringsaker, Hedmark. ENTRY #129 (3rd from bottom) Hedmark county, Ringsaker, Parish register (official) nr. 9 (1850-1860), Birth and baptism records women 1859, page 165. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8843&idx_id=8843&uid=ny&idx_side=-172 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070119310175.jpg This is the family in the 1865-telling (census) living at Christiansborg eller Brænden..... hence the name Brenden. "http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=f60412&gardpostnr=959&sokefelt=skjul" So, all names are correct, at one time or another, Nordlien, Brænden and such being farm locations (addresses, if you may) at the time of the event (birth / confirmation / marriage / etc.). Finding birth records for Lars and Berte should give us the farm names where they were born (about 1821 to 1823/4) in Ringsaker. Have a nice day! Conflicting info on published trees: 1) Berthe Olsdtr. Mokkelasen, 2) Berthe Olsdatr. Nordlien. Both born abt. 1823. Lars and Berthe were married in 1851. The family is believed to have come to the U.S. in 1866 and settled eventually in Trempealeau Co., Wisconsin. > Can you tell me which is the correct last name for Berthe?
