Dear Linda and Kathy! This information may already be known to you, but just in case...: I notice that "your" Annie Severson is in 1910 listed as 71 years old, widowed, born in Norway, residing in Riverton township, Clay Co., MN with single daughter Sarah (48 MN) and daughter Mollie (40 MN) with 2nd husband Frank Oliver (42 MN) and their son Roy (7 MN). The same lady called Annie Syverson is widowed also i 1905 residing in Riverton township, Clay Co., MN with daughter Serine. In 1900 she is Annie L. Syverson born Aug. 1838 in Norway, emigrated 1851, in Riverton township, Clay Co., MN with husband Ole Syverson born Jan. 1830 in Norway, emigrated 1852. And according to FamilySearch: Ole Severson, aged 76, died in Riverton township, Clay Co., MN on Nov. 22, 1904. So, who was Ole Syverson? I am not too sure that he was a "Sogning". For three reasons: * Riverton township of Clay Co., MN is not a typical "Sogning" settlement area. * Syverson is a name which is rare among Sogning emigrants. In Sogn the original name was Sjurson, which almost without exceptions is "Americanized" by Severson. * I see no "suitable" "candidates" among the emigrants from Sogn! I have done some checking on FamilySearch, and presuming she was born in January of 1828, 1829 or 1830, I see several "good" "candidates": ** Ole Syverson, born Jan. 11, 1830 in Vinger Co., Hedmark - par: Syver Olson and Martha Olsdotter ** Ole Syverson, born Jan. 7, 1829 in Hof Co., Hedmark - par: Syver Hansson and Olea Olsdotter ** Ole Sivertson, born Jan. 1, 1829 in Storen Co., Sor-Trondelag - par: Sivert Olson and Kari Andersdotter ** Ole Sivertson, born Jan, 18, 1830 in Storen Co., Sor-Trondelag - par: Sivert Olson and Olaug Jensdotter ** Ole Sivertson, born Jan. 10, 1830 in Lesja Co., Oppland - par: Sivert Hanson and Marit Johnsdotter ** Ole Syverson, born Jan. 14, 1830 in Lom Co., Oppland - par: Syver Olson and Marie Johannesdotter The only thing that I do NOT like; the 1880 census suggests that Ole and Anna's oldest daughter was Serine (Siri/Sigrid), while the next daughter was named Christine. Since Anna's mother was named Christi, I would expect Ole's mother to be named Siri or Sigrid! Maybe a death certificate or a cemetery marker can be found for Ole Syverson to find his exact date of birth? And maybe his death certificate shows the names of his parents? Hoping these thoughts may bring some result... Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Tusen takk, Lars! Much appreciated -- your time and indepth help with this puzzle. We do think our Ole could be from Sogn og Fjordane. Yes. You are correct - the 1904 date could work for our Ole, given the Census showing Anna (Annie) widowed in 1905 and 1910. However, our Anna is married in 1920 but lives in Glyndon -- about a ten minute car ride from the farm just east of Glyndon, in Clay County. she died 12.17.1927 we now believe; and we have an Ole who appears to have died in 1928 that could fit as well. We do know this makes our Ole about 99 - 100 but it fits with the 1920 census. Why was Anna married in 1920 and Ole not living with her? Maybe she was in a nursing home (89 years old when she died in 1927); or maybe she was in a home and Ole in nursing home?? We are next to certain that our Anna died in 12.27.1927. The reason: Her parents are cited as Botolf Larson and Kristi Hansdatter Svardal -- those names are hard to replicate and they are in the record we found. So perplexing! We do have one Census citing Ole immigrated in 1852. That is a small help. Also - we do think that Ole and Anna met in Dodge/ Olmsted County MN where she lived with her parents from about 1854 until at least they married about 1859 or so. I think the hand-written church records confirm it, as well as I think there is a confirmation of baptism of some of their children at E. St. Olaf Lutheran Church there in Olmsted Cty as well. This fits our expectations for Anna's siblings and her parents were there or close to there (Mower County is the other 'spot' for some of them until late 1870's at least but that is barely past Dodge Cty to the S or the West). We know these areas as all of Anna's three maternal aunts/uncle also came to Dodge County, and lived there until they died and their children and many grandchildren are buried there and many are still alive living in Dodge County as well as Olmsted / Mower Counties. So we do think it is realistic to think the our Ole Syverson did live in Olmstead / Dodge County and there are LOTS of Sogn immigrants that settled there, not the least of which are all of Anna's ancestors and relatives -- all Sogn folks. If any one has methods to help us, we are also searching land records, obituaries, probates and anything else we might be able to find to help verify which 'Ole' we call Anna's Ole. Tusen takk. Ok, I am seriously confused with the Ole Syversons in Clay county, MN, and could use some focused help from the list. Reading this entry on WorldConnect, are these two Ole Syversons in Clay county actually brothers! http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:516816&id=I0916 <http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:516816&id=I0916> Or are there three Ole Syversons, plus sons that may have been named for their fathers and uncles. I think there are at least three: 1) Ole O. SYVERSON b. 4 DEC 1842 in Flå, Buskerud Kommune, Hallingdal, Norway and married Gurine Stensgard 2) Ole S. SYVERSON b. 12 NOV 1848 in Flå, Buskerud Kommune, Hallingdal, Norway and married Ingeborg Knutson Ulen #1 and #2 were sons of Syver and Kari OLSON 3) Ole O. SYVERSON b. Anyone researching in MN will also want to check the Bureau of Land Management records: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/default.aspx <http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/default.aspx> You may be able to find Land Grants or, more likely, Land Patents. You can actually download images of the original documents from that website. There are four records for Ole Syverson in Clay county: 12/30/1881, 8/15/1884, 6/1/1886, and 7/15/1890. And another record for two parcels of land in Polk county: 10/20/1888. My only worry is which Ole Syverson is this, since there was more than one that has a death record for Clay county. Thank you Lars. Yes, this is the family. They left Bø 24 Feb 1852 and went to Sannidal. Then left Sannidal 2 Apr 1857 for Chicago. None of the children were married at that time. Andrew's obit states "...emigrated to America in 1857, locating first in Chicago where he remained one year. In the spring of 1858 he came to Door county, entering some lands near Egg Harbor and clearing up a farm upon which he resided eight years. He then sold this property and went to Utica, WI, where he bought a farm upon which he lived two years, when he traded it for another farm between Whitewater and Palmyra..." In 1860 all but Gullik and Kirsti are with the family in Gibraltar, Door, WI. Nils is my great grandfather, and I know of John and Thomas' families. I don't know about the other four children, except that Gullik, Gunhild and Kari are buried with the family at Skoponong Cemetery in Palmyra, WI. Seems possibly Kirsti married/died in Door Co? Since this death record and burial for Gunhild is the only info I have for her since the 1860 census, I wanted to find: -what that word in her death record is, hoping it could be a clue to something [written in Norwegian] -find a marriage record-find her and husband Hans Johansen/Johanneson in the 1870 census Thanks, Wanda On Wednesday, April 22, 2015 6:46 AM, Lars E. I am hoping this might be a clue for something - anything. I can find nothing of this marriage. Or on the 1870 census, which is dated August, so they should be listed. She is not with her family in Palmyra, Jefferson Co, WI. She is buried at Skoponong Cemetery in Palmyra, with her family. In fact, she has a shared headstone with her sister, Kari, who died four years after her, and on this headstone is listed her husband again, Hans Johansen ( Gunhild Marie Nielson (1846 - 1870) - Find A Grave Memorial ). There is an entry for him at FindaGrave, but I don't believe he is buried there (engraved over the sisters' names is 'here is resting the dust from sisters'). I have never come across a death record with husband and marriage date listed (maybe because so recent?), then his name on the headstone also, when he is not buried there. The family was in Gibralter, Door Co, WI in 1860 and she was 14 years old. I don't know when between 1860 and 1870 they moved to Palmyra, but maybe she stayed in Door County? She was buried the day after she died, so she must have been living close. Any help would be appreciated - she has been a mystery. Wanda
Ole, from Sebeka, appeared on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' and towards the end of the program had already won 500,000 Kroner. "You've done very well so far," said Sven Svensen, the show's presenter, "but for a million Kroner yew've only got vun life-line left, phone a friend. Everyting is riding on dis question. Vill yew go for it?" "Ya, yew betcha," said Ole, "I'll try it vun time!" "Vhich of the following birds does NOT build its own nest? a) Sparrow b) Thrush, c) Magpie, d) Cuckoo?" "Uffda, dat’s a hard vun," said Ole, ''Sew I'll use my last lifeline and phone my friend Lars back home in Wadena.." Ole called up Lars, and told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him. "Yumpin yimminy, Ole!" cried Lars, "Dat's simple, it's a cuckoo." "Are yew sure?" "I'm sure." Ole hung up the phone and told Sven, "I'll go vith cuckoo as my answer." "Is dat your final answer?" asked Sven. "Ya, yew betcha." There was a long, long pause and then the presenter screamed, "Cuckoo is the correct answer! Ole, you've von 1 million kroner!" The next night, Ole invited Lars over to give him a drink. "Tell me, Lars? How in Heaven's name did yew know it vas da Cuckoo dat doesn't build its own nest?" "Because he lives in a goldang clock!" Sent from my iPad John Ferman Minneapolis, MN
No ,it doesn`t look like the right Martin Olson. It doesn`t fit with what I have on the family. I have also checked if the parents had any children before their marriage in Tynset or Alvdal ,and they didn`t. I would think the most likely (so far) to be Martin is the one in Seattle. Of course he could be mentioned as Martin Olson/Olsen too.... -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Cliff Lien [mailto:cjl@interbaun.com] Sendt: 22. april 2015 15:36 Til: Erik Hov; norway@rootsweb.com Emne: Re: [NOR] Peter and Sarah Olson in Oil City ,PA and MN Here is a link to the Canadian Archives image for this Martin B Olson He is in Dawson (City) in the Yukon <http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1901/Pages/results.aspx?k=cnsSurname%3a%22olson%22+AND+cnsGivenName%3a%22martin%22+AND+cnsProvinceCode%3a%22TT%22> He actually appears on another "Absentee List" page where it is noted he has been enumerated on the Bridge ???? page. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1901/Pages/results.aspx?k=cnsSurname%3a%22olsen%22+AND+cnsGivenName%3a%22martin%22+AND+cnsProvinceCode%3a%22TT%22 He is listed as a Deck Hand on both pages and I think he is working on a crew building a bridge. You might be able to find something in the newspapers for them. Door County has all of their old newspapers online. http://doorcountynewspapers.org <http://doorcountynewspapers.org/> From what I can tell, you need to search for an exact spelling, so it might take awhile to search for different possible spellings of their names. -Mark
Kathy, Going back to a citation where Anna, 81, in 1920 was living with her daughter, 58 in Glyndon, Clay Cty, MN in searched for a death for her after that. I found one I believe is our Anna, and I attempted to email it to you. It cites she died, married, age 89, 12.27.1927, in Glyndon, MN, and what confirms to me it has to be here is her parents are cited: Bottolf Larson Christine Hanson (Kristi Hansdatter Svardal was her mother's name in Norway) I don't think that there is an error in this. Then, wondering because it says Anna was married, I checked MNHS and found an Ole Severson: 11.28.1928 Clay County, MN #001755 Since I do not have hardly a thing on Ole, I can't be positive this is him, and it doesn't cite birth details at the MNHS.org cite What do you think - could this be Ole, dying at about 100? I do think I found Anna, largely because of her parents' cited on the site. Linda
Thank you Kathy! We'll go with this as the date for Ole's death. Do you know, if I wanted to request a copy of the probate, would I contact the recorder at Clay County? I'm interested to see what offspring are cited. Linda > I obtained a copy of this MN death record that Cliff pointed out and, > unfortunately, this is really about all thatâs on the death record. Dear Wanda, You don't specifically ask for help finding the Norwegian origin of this family, so this may all be known information to you, but just in case: FamilySearch shows: Anders Nilsson (23 - father Nils Thomasson) and Ingeborg Gulliksdotter (28 - father Gullik Saamundson) were married in Bo County, Telemark fylke on Feb. 1, 1833 and had at least these children born in Bo County in Telemark fylke: * Nils, born May 18, 1833, christened May 27, 1833 * Gullik, born May 1, 1835, christened June 8, 1835 * Kirsti, born June 5, 1837, christened June 18, 1837 * Thomas, born May 20, 1840, christened June 8, 1840 * John, born Feb. 11, 1843, christened Mar. 12, 1843 * Gunnhild Marie, born Jan. 15, 1846, christened Feb. 16, 1846 * Kari, born Oct. 27, 1850, christened Jan. 19, 1851 The family home was a "husmannsplass" named Engeland! Here is a link to the Canadian Archives image for this Martin B Olson He is in Dawson (City) in the Yukon <http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1901/Pages/results.aspx?k=cnsSurname%3a%22olson%22+AND+cnsGivenName%3a%22martin%22+AND+cnsProvinceCode%3a%22TT%22> He actually appears on another "Absentee List" page where it is noted he has been enumerated on the Bridge ???? page. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1901/Pages/results.aspx?k=cnsSurname%3a%22olsen%22+AND+cnsGivenName%3a%22martin%22+AND+cnsProvinceCode%3a%22TT%22 He is listed as a Deck Hand on both pages and I think he is working on a crew building a bridge. He might live in a worker's camp, I am guessing. And there is likely a boat involved in the bridge construction and this Martin works on the boat. A problem is that Martin B lives with his brother Chris. J Olson/Olsen who was 32, born in Minnesota and arrived in Canada in 1894. I don't think Christopher/Christian belongs in your family? I must have overlooked that one. Of course we don`t know yet ,if that Martin in Seattle 1900 and Canada 1901 is the one I am looking for ,but I wonder where in Canada “F, Unorganized Territories/territoires Non-organisés,The Territories, Canada” are located??. It doesn`t tell me anything ,but if we could see the household ,it might be possible to tell if it is the same Martin Bertinius. Have taken a look at familysearch myself (don`t have subscription to ancestry) looking for the daughter Sarah ,and found a Sarah Grasem https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9Q9-FQT it fits her birth month/year/place ,but can`t find more on her or her family.
