Ole Enok Martin Stephanusen, son of Stefanus Olai Olsen and Fredrikka Cecille Svendsdatter, born 4 June 1868 at Smyr Farm, Lønvik, Troms, Norway. where are you?????? I assume Smyr farm = Græsmyr in Lenviken sogn, Troms. However, I can find no references to him or his family in the Census of 1875, nor can I figure out which of the Churchbooks to look in. He emigrates to Inwood, Manitoba, Canada, probably as Ole Stevenson, then to Eugene / Springfield area of Oregon and dies 9 September 1926 in Eugene. I need help with the Norway portion of my search. I'd sure appreciate any suggestions for specific sources for him. Thanks Earl

If anyone has access to these books, I would like to request a look to see if we can find Jon/John Larsen Fosmo(e) who was born 7 May 1859 and emigrated from Trondheim 19 April 1881 bound for Sioux Falls DT. (He later winds up in Grand Forks County, DT, and Polk County, Minnesota, just across the Red River from each other.) Thanks in advance for any help on this. Dear Listers! In order to avoid any "double work", let me tell you that I managed yesterday to solve this problem! A wonderful biography for Dagny Alphson was found online, and it included some information about "old" Inga who at an advanced age was sent by train to live with her son at Bremerton, WA, quite an experience for a lady who had suffered several minor strokes and who in loud words expressed her protests against every kind of movement in the train! It sounded like another Lina!! Anyway, I managed to trace a grandson of Inga's currently residing at Olympia, WA, and I called him yesterday. However, the woman who answered the phone hung up on me! However, the Forest Lawn cemetery office in Bremerton, WA gave me excellent assistance, and they found Inga for me! She had remarried after 1940 to Magnus Salvog who died at Knox, ND in 1950, and she died as Inga Salvog at Bremerton, WA on Aug. 22, 1967! She was buried next to her son! So, another problem solved! John, Failsafe as in no numbers ever getting duplicated? You can let your genealogy program assign unique numbers as you enter new people, but those numbers are basically meaningless unless you always enter families in a meaningful order. Most of us don't learn about people that way. New babies get born in families we already know about, etc. Different programs use different formats. Here's what my program, RootsMagic, provides. If I start with a given person and ask for a report of his or her descendants, that person is listed as roman numeral I. If they were married multiple times, the report lists the marriages in chronological order, and if I've asked to have the marriage dates included, it includes those dates. Under each spouse's name, it lists each child in chronological order, with an A., B., C., as many as are needed, in front of their name, and indents them each the same amount. I can control whether the spouse's name appears, (usually you'd want that) and the marriage date and place if you specify. Below each couple with indentations, their children are listed in order, and they are numbered with 1., 2., 3., as many as needed. I like to add spouses, because I want to know the children of each marriage. If there are any, they are indented again and shown as a., b.,, c., as many as needed. The next generation is indented yet again, and the children are given lower case Roman numerals—i., ii., iii., etc. This system allows for five generations so far, which is all I needed in the most recent report I produced. One small stickler was that the originating person had been married twice, with one child from the first marriage and three from the second marriage. This meant that under the first marriage, there was one child numbered A, and under the second marriage, an A, as well as B and C. There are numerous great grandchildren, but since the person labelled A from the second marriage had no children at all, each other person in the chart appears to have a unique identifier. However in general, in cases where someone was married twice, you couldn't count on unique identifiers. Nonetheless, I've seen this kind of numbering system used in, say, the New England Historic Genealogical Society's *Register*. Once you get used to reading a chart like this, it's not particularly confusing. On the other hand, my genealogical program, which happens to be RootsMagic, also will create a descendant report with a neat box around each person's name, indentations to show parental relationships, and lines to show how families are related to each other. It is a version of the top-down genealogical chart we're used to seeing in books, in more concise form. This one can be saved/printed in PDF format. Hope this clarifies things a bit. I am sure there are multiple other formats. No, I can't seem to find him in either the 1865 or 1875 censuses, and if he was born in Holtålen, I can't seem to spot him in the church books either. But maybe it is just my eyes. Hi Bev, I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but just before your message came I found him on Find-A-Grave. John L. Fosmo (John Larsen Fosmoe) is buried in South Bethany Cemetery north of East Grand Forks. He was born in 1859 and died in 1901. (The birth date and death date both match the information I have.) He shares a stone with a daughter Lovise who died in 1902. Also, in the same cemetery, there is a Lesbet Fosmoe buried who died in 1888. This is almost certainly John's first wife, who he married in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1886. John is listed as John Larson in the 1900 census in Northland Township, Polk County, together with his second wife Maria (also sometimes spelled Mary) and children. I can verify this is him because of his sons Pete and Ole and their birth months and years. Also, Lovise is included in that census as Louisa. Now my next problem will be how to track John back to Norway. According to the census, he immigrated in 1881, but I really have no idea from which part of Norway. Also, confounding this search, there is another John Fosmo(e) in Minnesota born about the same time, in Otter Tail County as I recall. So far, I have not found the correct John in either the 1865 or 1875 census in Norway. If you have any clues where I might find additional information about John Larsen Fosmoe, I would greatly appreciate it. We will be back in that area in the middle of June so I can visit in Polk County if I believe I can find further information there. (We will be attending my high school class reunion in Hatton, North Dakota and will be staying in the Fargo area for about a week.) Thanks for any hints you may have to aid my search. Greg
Vi - I think the others have it correct: those are numbers assigned by someone else's genealogy program - the person whose work you said you obtained. In 2000 when I first made contact with living relatives (5th cousins) in Norway, one of them was a genealogy researcher and we did a massive exchange of information before I had my spinal fusion surgery (I was using computers at the public library before getting my own a year later), and he had numbers for everyone. I had info on descendants of emigrants to send to him, and he sent me info on our mutual ancestors. When I got my own computer, then a laptop and compatible genealogy program, I put his name + ID numbers in the Notes section for the persons and connections he had so where we had duplicates he would know what to do with the information. [ALL of my documentation goes in the Notes sections in chronological order for each person in my genealogy database. The reason I love the program I got is that it mimics how I kept my documentation in my original notebooks many years ago: family group or person sheet + info & documents filed right behind that, and now with the computer genealogy program the Notes get printed out right along with the data for the person listed in the family group sheet or person sheet.] This was before Digitalarkivet put images online, although we were lucky and that region our mutual ancestors came from had/has much transcribed data. The fifth cousin with the genealogy program died a few years ago, so now there is no need for the numbers which only meant something to his individual genealogy program. No one took over his data. Much more transcribed data - and now images - have been added in Digitalarkivet. In the intervening years I've added image information to my genealogy program, more transcribed data, and I miss the congenial sharing of information. He was such a very nice person and I can't help but think it would have been so much fun to share the data and images for our mutual family members after they came online, and think that he would have been so pleased that so much more data has been found for them, including the images we didn't have access to when he was still alive. My own genealogy program has the ability to assign numbers, but I disabled it. I think in terms of names..., not numbers..., none of which make any sense to me, since there is no rhyme or reason to the numbers. It just assigns random numbers to each person as I add them (e.g., when I added the four infants who died or were stillborn for my paternal grandparents - many years after my original documentation of the nine siblings I knew about - the numbering sequence for the additional four was many thousands later than the original addition of my father and his then-known siblings). Since I think in terms of names, even a kind of pedigree diagram in my head, as I enter data, the numbers are totally unnecessary for my purposes, so I just disabled the feature, even though I can see the numbers if I turn it on. My best advice is to ignore the numbers, delete them. They only matter to the genealogy program of the person who first entered the information in his/her genealogy program and have no bearing on how you enter your data in your genealogy program; your own genealogy program would assign its own numbers. If your source documentation or miscellaneous notes includes the name of the person from whom you got the info, you can include that name for credit, and include her/his document number - but it is still meaningless to your own genealogy program's documentation. [I'm assuming you got your own documents and verified this other person's data, not just collected names and copied someone else's work.] Best Wishes, Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: VIOLET MARTIN via <norway@rootsweb.com> To: NORWAY-L@rootsweb.com Cc: Sent: Thursday, April 30, 2015 10:16 AM Subject: [NOR] family tree A few years ago I received a family tree from Norway. Hei, Cliff. In answer to your question "...can't find Haltdalen...?" The municipality of /Holtaalen/ was established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formannskapsdistrikt>). In 1841, the western part of the municipality was separated to become the municipality of Singsås <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sings%C3%A5s>. This left Holtaalen with 1,885 residents. Then in 1855, the southeastern part of Holtaalen was separated to become the municipality of Ålen <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%85len>, leaving Holtaalen with 809 residents. The spelling of the name was changed to /Holtålen/ in 1921. In 1937, the name was changed from Holtålen to Haltdalen <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haltdalen>. On 1 January 1972, the municipality of Haltdalen <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haltdalen> was merged with Ålen <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%85len> to form the new municipality of Holtålen. Prior to the merger, Haltdalen had 778 residents. The ahnentafel numbering systems works backwards in time, but numbering forwards in time is complicated, because a couple may have multiple children and should a spouse die the other one could remarry and have more children. Does anyone know of a failsafe numbering system running from ancestor towards descendent? Sent from my iPad John Ferman Minneapolis, MN
Have been looking around at ancestry.com for Jeanette Sollars. I did find her ,but not her husband Edward. I found her in a tree ,and It looks like she was born in Schuyler ,Colfax County ,NE 6 Feb 1900 and died in Sterling ,Logan County ,Colorado 10 May 1991 ,and was married before 1930 to Herbert Earl McKenzie ,born in Yorktown ,Bureau County ,IL 16 Nov 1889 and died in Sterling ,CO 7 Apr 1965. They lived in Sterling ,CO in the 1930 and 1940 censuses ,but had no children ,and it is not listed any children in the tree or in the census to her and Edward Olson. Edward Olson isn`t mentioned in the tree either. On One great family tree it was listed that Edward`s name was Edward Herman Olson ,but it had no birth year or info for him. On another ancestry.com tree I found Edward Herman Olson born in 1897 in Sweden as the one who married Jeanette in 1921. The trees has no parents for this Edward Herman.... So ,unfortunately for me ,it seems that Mark`s possibility for my Edward Olson isn`t the right one (4 years off and born in Sweden) ,so guess I am back at the beginning....... -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: norway-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:norway-bounces@rootsweb.com] På vegne av Mark Erickson via Sendt: 30. april 2015 18:50 Til: norway@rootsweb.com Emne: Re: [NOR] Edward Olson born abt 1901 in Nebraska Don’t know if this is your Edward, but he would have been around twenty years old at the time of this marriage. Would be great if this is Edward. I am onto checking Jeanette and her family and try to find them in 1930. (Edward`s brother Tony Olson also had a son named Edward born in 1922 ,so that might be an indication on that Edward born abt 1901 died early ,and that the younger Edward was named after him ,but I can`t be sure on that) Seems like Louis O. Kingdon and wife Mary are listed twice in the 1920 census ,both in North Platte and in East Hinman ,NE. Thank You Vi
I have no idea of where Edward was when he may have graduated from High School. As long as I don`t know more I have to stick with that he was living "near Emerson ,Nebraska" since his mother was there in 1920 and up to 1927. Since he was born abt 1901 ,he should have graduated abt 1918-1919. -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Barbara Young [mailto:bayofcc@comcast.net] Sendt: 30. april 2015 15:32 Til: Erik Hov; norway@rootsweb.com Emne: Re: [NOR] Edward Olson born abt 1901 in Nebraska Hi Erik, I you can guess at the years he may graduated from High School and the location where he may have been at that time, you could find him the their Year Book and might get some leads from that. Often they put in what his goals were or what he was going to do after graduation - might mention a school of higher learning or join the military - any number of things. He would probably have been about 17 or 18 years of age upon graduation. I am having trouble understanding this paragraph. Can someone help me with a translation? Thanks. Hello. I am trying to find out Edward`s birth date and where he possibly died or if he had family ,but have trouble!!. I have previously ,back in 2004 I think ,asked about Edward`s parents descendants ,but never found out more about Edward. Edward was the 10th and youngest child of Martin Olson ,born in Norway 22 Oct 1856 died 8 Apr 1941 and Olive Torkelson ,born 2 Jun 1856 died 17 Feb 1944. They lived in Monona County ,IA before 1896. Before 1896 Martin and Olive had moved to Nebraska ,and In 1900 they were living in Hunter ,Wayne County ,Nebraska. Edward wasn` born yet in 1900. Martin and Olive divorced before 1910 ,and Martin lived for the rest of his life in Soldier ,Monona County ,Iowa. In 1910 Olive lived in Emerson ,Dixon County ,Nebraska with her daughter Edith 1896-1956 ,son Edward ,and grandson Henry Bosteder 1903-1948. Olive was still living in Emerson ,NE in 1920 ,but moved in abt 1928 to Cheyenne ,Wyoming where she lived 1930 and 1940. I know what I need on all Olive`s children except for Edward ,and now hope someone can help me find him or direct me to where to maybe find more about him. What I know about Edward is unfortunately nearly nothing!!: He was born in Nebraska about 1901 (Wayne County?) ,and was still living in 1910 with his mother ,sister and his sister Bertha`s son Henry Bosteder. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:ML43-SYQ I have no idea of Edward`s exact birth date ,where in Nebraska he was born ,or if Edward had any middle name ,so it is not much to go on. I have tried to find him after 1910 ,but haven`t had any luck ,so don`t know if he was alive in 1920,1930 or 1940. Only thing I know is that he is not mentioned in his mother`s obituary from 1944 ,so he probably was dead by then. Another odd thing in Olive`s obituary is that she is listed to have 31 grandchildren ,but however I count her grandchildren ,I can only come up with 24!!. It is either wrong counting of grandchildren in the obituary ,or it means that Edward had 7 children. NOT an easy one. What I wonder is where can I find church records for Emerson ,Nebraska???. It looks to me that Emerson is located in three counties ,Dixon ,Dakota and Thurston Counties. His mother Olive lived in Emerson ,NE 1920 ,and If Edward lived after 1910 too ,I bet he had his confirmation in Emerson ,and that should give his birth date and birth place too. But where to find the records if they exist??? Thanks , Erik
