Dear Listers, This problem has been discussed before, but only as part of the Christine Thompson McCaffrey Johnson (1854-1920) "enigma" in and around Grand Forks, ND. Today I wish to focus on one of her Norwegian son-in-laws who appears quite impossible to track down! Nicholas "Nick" P. FOSS enters the family as he on Nov. 15, 1893 was married in Grand Forks, ND to Ella Thompson McCaffrey. He was a painter and is said to be 31 years old at the time, but the 1900 census shows he was born in Norway in August of 1857. He ended his life by being killed by a train near Devils Lake, ND on Sep. 26, 1927, aged about 65. Newspaper items concerning this accident have been located before. But where did Nick come from? I am pretty sure I have found him living in Minneapolis, MN at the time of the 1885 state census. Then he is 25 years old and is called Nick FUSS, and the city directories show him several times: ~~~~~ 1882/1883: no entry 1883/1884: no entry 1884/1885: N. P. Foss pts. St P R'y r 118 Cedar Ave. So 1885/1886: Nicholas Foss emp W. Babcock 1886/1887: no entry 1887/1888: Nicholas P. Foss ptr. r1920 S 2d 1888/1889: no entry 1889/1890: no entry ~~~~~ But how are these entries to be understood? I presume the one from 1887/1888 "ptr" suggests he was indeed a PAINTER residing on 1920 S 2nd Avenue (or Street), but what does the 1884/1885 listing mean? Then I also have a rather "puzzling" piece of information from FamilySearch showing this birth record from Chicago, IL: ~~~~~ Name: Foss Event Type: Birth Event Date: 06 Oct 1881 Event Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States Registration Place: , Cook, Illinois Gender: Male Ethnicity: American Race: White Father's Name: Nicklas Foss Mother's Name: Margarita Certificate Number: 1593 ~~~~~ It may seem like "our" Nick had been married before to this Margaret, and they had a son, but this is the only entry for that couple! Or can more information be located in Chicago, IL on this man? According to the 1900 census Nick had emigrated in 1877, but I just cannot find any emigrant from Norway "matching" this person! Maybe newspaper items will mention him? Or city directories in Chicago, IL? Or could he have other Foss relatives in Minneapolis, MN? Any suggestions would be more than welcome! You are my last hope! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

Dear Listers, I have just learned that 1872 emigrant from Luster Co., Norway: Synneva Jenson, born in Hafslo parish, Luster Co., Norway Jan. 24, 1813, died near Astoria, Deuel Co., SD on July 22, 1910, at the age of 97, i.e. the church record of the Wood Lake Lutheran church says she died on July 52, 1910, and she was interred on July 26, 1910. We believe the correct death date was July 22! Synneva was widowed when she emigrated, and she left eight children whose whereabouts in 1910 would be of great interest! Can someone please try to find an obituary for her? Thanks a million for your great assistance! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

The areas bordering the Red River of the North had good farm land (especially for grain, because of floods that periodically occur)..., and I know that many/most communities had both Norwegian and Swedish immigrants who settled in the area on both sides of the river, or moved back and forth. Does anyone have access to the bygdebøk for Aremark parish? I recently discovered that my great-great-great grandfather is from this area, but it's apparently not available on inter-library loan. My ancestor is Christian Olsen, born April 16 1834 from Solerud (or Sollerud) farm, and his father is Ole Olsen, mother's name is ?? Olsdotter (I can't make it out on the christening record - http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060604030132.jpg) He married and moved to Høland, Akershus, but the Høland bygdebøk says that in 1894 his family moved back to Aremark (info listed under his wife, Marie Kristine Halvorsdotter in that bygdebøk.) The 1875 census has a different farm listed, Ødemark S (http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060604030132.jpg) Was wondering if anyone could do a lookup or has any other insight for me? Dear Listers, Another individual who is so well hiding I cannot find her. Maybe your eyes are better than mine? Christiana aka Christie Boyum, born in Dane Co., WI May 31, 1868, first married in Madison, WI May 27, 1889 to John Irvin Peckham (1865-1950). I believe they lived in or near Madison, WI, but they divorced about 1895. second married at Rockford, IL Jan. 1, 1901 to Joseph Hubertus Rubbert (1865-1918). They lived on a farm in Falls township near Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co., IA, but after Joseph died Apr. 11, 1918, Christie moved to Beaver Dam, Dane Co, WI where she lived in 1920. We know Christie was still alive in 1925 (address unknown), but then she "disappears"! I should add that Christie had an only daughter: Ruby H. Rubbert, born at Plymouth, Cerro Gordo Co., IA Dec. 16, 1901, was married at Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN Aug. 10, 1929 to Noel Montgomery, born at Mecca, IN Sep. 14, 1904. The 1930 census shows this couple residing at Lapel, Madison Co., IN, but Christie Rubbert is NOT with them. Questions: * Can newspaper announcements be found regarding her divorce from John Peckham about 1895? * Can newspaper announcements or obituaries or even other records be found regarding Christie Rubbert's death after 1925? Thanks a million for any suggestions in regard to "long-lost" Christie! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Dear Listers! I am just not able to find this marriage anywhere! Maybe the names have somehow been corrupted in the official records? Maybe a newspaper announcement can be found: Andrew L. EGGUM (1879-1948) Olena Bertina "Lena" BOYUM (1883-1963) shall have been married in 1908 (or perhaps 1909?) The 1910 census for Windsor township, Dane Co., WI says they had been married for one year and had one a year old child. The marriage does not appear on the WI statewide marriage index for 1907-1909, and they did not elope to Rockford, IL. Any suggestions as to when and where they may have married, would be more than welcome! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Dear Listers, I have for a number of years tried to figure out what really happened to this young Norwegian-American lad from Dane Co., WI. I have just about solved the problem, but I need your help to possibly find newspaper clippings or other sources to document my findings: Severt L. Boyum, son of John and Randi Boyum of Bristol township, Dane Co., WI, was born in Dane Co., WI July 11, 1876. He eloped to Rockford, IL where on Dec. 28, 1910 he married Emma Maria Schroeder of German background, born in Columbia Co., WI Aug. 27, 1885. They moved to Duluth, MN where Severt worked as a milk delivery man. Three children were born, 1912, 1913 and 1915. Then about 1917 Severt left his wife and children. Emma Boyum returned to Madison, WI where she died Oct. 24, 1974. Under the name of Louis Nelson her husband shows up in the fall of 1918 (WW1 draft) as a laborer at Kenosha, Kenosha Co., WI, but soon thereafter he moved to Ft. Wayne, IN where he, according to the 1930 census, was married about 1924 to: Asa Bell aka Isabelle Metzger Fuchshuber Burnside. born in Putnam Co., OH Feb. 10, 1880 she married 1st time in Paulding Co., OH Mar. 29, 1898 to John Adam Fuchshuber - had three children she married 2nd time at Ft. Wayne, IN June 26, 1922 to William Burnside, born in Logan Co., OH Sep. 21, 1863 Louis Nelson worked at Ft. Wayne, IN as a cheese maker, and he and Isabelle remained at Ft. Wayne where Louis died Jan. 12, 1934. Isabelle Nelson died at Ft. Wayne, IN Nov. 19, 1966 and are buried together in the Lindenwood cemetery at Ft. Wayne, IN. My questions: * Can any evidence be found that Louis Nelson and Isabelle Fuchshuber Burnside was really married, and if so, date and place of this marriage? * Can obituaries be found for Louis Nelson (1934) and Isabelle Nelson (1966)? Thanks a million for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

We have this Ole Severson’s death card. He passed away on Nov 22, 1904. There were, at least, three Ole Syverson/Severson gentlemen in Clay county around 1900. So it was really important to get the obits to make sure we had the right guy. The other two were in or near a little town called Ulen, and this one was in the Riverton township very near to the little town of Glyndon. The Red River News - operated up until 1929. Nov 25, 1904 A Pioneer Passed Away Ole Diversion of Riverton, aged 73 and one of the early settlers in Riverton township, died Nov 23, at his home of a combination of ailments, and is buried today. He leaves a widow and four daughter. His life has been one of exceptional quiet and unobtrusiveness, and he has always been held in high esteem by his neighbors. He leaves a good name and a farm to his family. And that’s all they wrote. No mention of his parents in the obit or the early MN death card. The card gives his death date as the 22nd, whereas the obit says the 23rd. The card says he is 76, whereas the obit says 73. I looked at some microfilm (SAM #M294) today at the MN History Center. These three rolls of film are for Clay and Becker county ELC parish records. It had Buffalo River and several other locations, but did not seem to cover the church in Glyndon and it did not mention the Riverton township. We were hoping the church record books might name Ole’s parents, as well as maybe find a mention of what happened to his daughter, Bertina Olina “Lena” b. 15 April 1866 in southern Minnesota. Often they put in what his goals were or what he was going to do after graduation - might mention a school of higher learning or join the military - any number of things. The Lutheran church in Glyndon has a website with a nice little history of the church. It sounds like it would be a good candidate for the family to attend. If any one has tips how to find the Lutheran church that Ole and Anna Syverson and four daughters could have attended close to their farm in Riverton Township, Clay County, MN we would appreciate names of churches. They were both Norwegian immigrants (he b. 1830 and she b. 1838). Ole and Anna probably moved to the area around 1879 with four daughters. Also searching to try to find their daughter, Bertina Oline Syverson, b. 4.16.1866 in Dodge/Olmsted County, MN. Who she married, where she lived after marrying, where she died, offspring - any tips about her. We do have facts on the other three, as well as Ole and Anna's obits citing their death in Clay County (Ole 1904 and Anna 1927). Thank you to any tips! Linda Sharp
