    1. [NOR] Help with a place in Finnmark
    2. EDWARD A SCRIVEN via
    3. On the enclosed page there are 6 references to a place Hvåg. The record is from 1906 in Kjelvik in Finnmark. I have found this place mentioned frequently here. I thought it was a parish as it is referred to in several places as being where individuals were confirmed. Anyone on here familiar with Finnmark to help me know of another spelling or where else I can look for records from there? Thanks Source information: Finnmark county, Kjelvik in Måsøy, Parish register (official) nr. 8 (1900-1910), Marriage records 1906, page 141. 3. Mange Tusen Takk, Reina, for posting the links! Scenery in Norway is very dramatic and beautiful..., and the bunads! I'm in love with bunader! One of the women was dressed in the blue version of a Nord-Trøndelag bunad. I recognized it from photos a fifth cousin sent when his youngest daughter was confirmed. The sisters all had the blue version on, and my fifth cousin's mother wore the red version. I am thrilled to also be able to understand a few words now and then, whether it's the people giving speeches or the opening song which I don't have to translate. Mostly it's location names (Slottsplassen I can translate to Castle place, or maybe even castle courtyard) and words we use in genealogy research, but still, I can pick out individual words like elsker deg, mor, far, barn, gamle, hjem, and the like, without having to look them up in a translating dictionary. I am forwarding the links to family members so they can also enjoy the day! Again, Mange Tusen Takk, Reina for the links! 3. Dear Listers! I have tonite done some "brainstorming" on this problem, and I found this death record in Seattle, WA: ~~~~~~~~~~~ Name: Emma Davey [Emma Holte] Gender: Female Marital Status: Married Race: White Age: 56 Birth Date: 13 Oct 1874 Birth Place: Norway Death Date: 12 Mar 1931 Death Place: Seattle, King, Washington Burial Date: 14 Mar 1931 Burial Place: Stanwood, Wisconsin (should be Washington!?) Father: P Holte Mother: ~~~~~~~~~~~ And I find the marriage of Herbert E. DAVEY and Emma G. HILL in Seattle, WA July 15, 1918 Herbert Edwin Davey was born in England Feb. 27, 1881 and returned to England where he died in Hammersmith, London 4th quarter of 1972. Interesting is it to see that Emma was buried at STANWOOD, WA. Find-a-grave reveals that's also the burial site of her father Jacob Holte who died in 1899, 64 years old, as well as her brothers Peter and Gotfred Holte! Erick Hill doesn't appear to be there!! Another "intreaguing" question would be: WHERE was Emma Hill between 1890 and 1918?? Was she maybe married to someone else between Erick Hill and Herbert Davey?? Thanks again for any additional information anyone can provide on this family! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On May 17, 2015, at 7:57 AM, Lars E. 3. Lars, I found this doing a Google search for Skandinaven. Chronicling America lists the libraries that have copies. Maybe someone on the list lives near one of them. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045493/holdings/ There was also this reply to a query asking about Skandinaven. Apparently the Norwegian national Library has it on microfilm. The film numbers (and publication range) may help you track it down at a Chicago or other US location. This information was originally posted on the Norway-L. 1. Re: [NOR] Final attempt: Andrew (1829) and Dorthea "Tilda" (1845) Sorenson - Burke Co., ND - HELP PLEASE?
    2. Lars E. Oyane via
    3. Dear Mark and other Listers! Thank you very much, Mark, for your messages in regard to the Sorenson family. I have studied the names you sent me; I am afraid I don't know of any Laurits in Andrew's immediate family; neither do I know of any Peder or Emil. As far as Anton O. Sorenson of Mountrail and McLean Cos., ND is concerned, I find him in various census records, showing he was born in IA about 1894, which doesn't "match" too well with "our" Anton... Could it be that the children went by different last names? I previously found a railroad worker in Minneapolis, MN in 1910 by the name Anton Anderson, 36 years old and emigrated in 1884, both very close "matches" to "our" Anton, but I am unable to identify him in the Minneapolis City Directories about 1910... I also find an Ole A. Martinson, born (according to the WW1 draft record) in Norway May 12, 1879, residing in Leaf Mountain township, Burke Co., ND in 1910 and later. He has the same birthdate as "our" Ole. Can he be the one we are looking for? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On May 17, 2015, at 2:22 PM, Mark Erickson via wrote: > “The only place we now for sure the family resided, was in 1900 when the census for Township 161 Range 89 in Ward Co., ND (present-day Burke Co., ND)“ > > There is a SORENSEN, LAURITS P. buying 160 acres of that same land in 1905. This problem has been discussed several times on the NORWAY list, last time in January of 2014, but a final "break-thru" is still to be made. Now, this part of my manuscript has to be published, and it be SO GREAT to be able to present a more complete family record! Does anyone live in or near BURKE CO., ND who might have a chance to look up land records at the Burke Co., ND courthouse? Anders Sorenson Odegaard born in Hafslo, Norway Aug. 9, 1829 married in Bergen, Norway May 8, 1870 to: Dorothea Simonsdotter Boe born in Vang, Valdres, Norway Dec. 29, 1845 Anders was a potato merchant in Bergen until 1879, when he emigrated to the US, and in 1880 Dorothea followed. Children in this family: * Ole Larson (Boe), son of Dorothea and one Lars Olson Aasen, was born in Vang, Valdres, Norway Sep. 14, 1865 and is listed with Anders and Dorothea in the 1875 census, but then under the name Ole Anderson. He may have emigrated, but is so far unknown! * Anton Marius Anderson (Odegaard), born in Bergen, Norway May 30, 1875, emigrated to the US in 1885. * Anna Severine Anderson (Odegaard), born in Bergen, Norway May 2, 1876, emigrated to the US in 1885. * Ole Anderson (Odegaard), born in Bergen, Norway May 12, 1879, emigrated to the US in 1885 (he had a twin brother Marius who died shortly after birth). ~~~~~ When the three youngest children emigrated in 1885, they were "sent" by the Bergen City Welfare Department to their parents with address La Crosse, WI, but research has been done in La Crosse, WI - to no avail. They must have lived somewhere else at the time and only "picked up" the children in La Crosse, WI! The only place we now for sure the family resided, was in 1900 when the census for Township 161 Range 89 in Ward Co., ND (present-day Burke Co., ND) shows: SORENSON, Andrew not known 1822 aged 78 mar. 30 years Nor Nor Nor em. 1881 no occ. owns house fully paid SORENSON, Tilda Mar 1847 aged 53 mar. 30 years 9(3) ch. Nor Nor Nor em. 1881 wife SORENSON, Anton M May 1847 aged 23 single Nor Nor Nor em. 1881 son general laborer ~~~~~ What can be done next to find out what became of this family? I can only think of the following actions: ** Since Andrew Sorenson OWNED his house in Burke Co., ND (perhaps the current city of Bowbells?), there should be LAND RECORDS showing when he bought it and also when and how it changed owner after him. If we're real lucky, there may be a PROBATE RECORD involved showing death dates and addresses for the children... ** I presume there may also be NEWSPAPER ITEMS from the neighborhood telling about the Sorenson (Odegard) family, so if anyone has access to those, we might hav e a chance to find "something"! Maybe WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENTS involving the children? ** Finally, I presume it may also be worthwhile searching for MARRIAGE RECORDS at the Burke Co., ND courthouse for the three children, Anton Marius, Anna Severena and Ole, unless they would be recorded under Ward Co., ND (Minot), Burke being part of Ward Co. until 1910? Thanks again to all of you wonderful listers for any assistance or suggestions you may have! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

    3. Here’s Odean’s obit. Maybe you’d be able to contact relatives for more information. Odean O. SORENSON 3-5-1923 ~ 4-14-2009 On April 14, 2009 Odean Oral Sorenson passed away in his sleep at the age of 86 at Evergreen Rehabilitation Center, in Everett, WA. Sorenson and Ronald D. Sorenson; fourteen Grandchildren and three great-Grandchildren and too many friends to mention. Odean was married for 54 years to his wonderful wife Ardelle E. Sorenson who passed 5-19-2002. Odean was raised in a small town in North Dakota and served in the Marine Corps, being injured at the age of 20 on the Island of Peleliu in the South Pacific, leaving him partially paralyzed for the remainder of his life. Odean moved to Seattle remaining there to raise his family. A celebration of Life memorial will be held on Saturday April 25, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wandering Creek Clubhouse, 831 Wandering Creek Drive, Bothell, WA 98021. 3. Dear Greg and other Listers! Thank you very much, Greg, for your latest message in regard to Nils Jorpeland. I don't know how much "other" newspapers would write about an incident like the one where Nils drowned, but we know it appeared in "Skandinaven". Doesn't anyone on the list have access to "Skandinaven"'s issues from 1916? Thanks again for your great help in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Dear Listers! From the Oregon Vital records index I have found that the Erick Hill who died in Portland, OR, died on Apr. 2, 1894. Maybe with an exact date it may be possible to find "something" in the Portland, OR NEWSPAPER? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 1. [NOR] Dorothy Gunnderson Jensen in Everett Washington
    2. Lenise Cook via
    3. This list has been so helpful to others, I hope you don't mind my asking for help with a non-Norwegian. A friend is looking for info on her Danish gg grandmother and I believe I found her death date and place - Dorothy Gunnersen/Gunderson Jensen, born in Sandby, Denmark 24 Feb 1868, who died in Everett, Snohomish, Washington, 21 Jun 1960. Is is possible for anyone to locate her obituary or any other information on this woman. I believe I found the family in the censuses 1910 in Nebraska, 1920 and 1930 in Portland Oregon - Husband Hans (Harry) Peder Jensen, but that is about all I have. Any help is appreciated. Lenise

    1. [NOR] Final attempt: Andrew (1829) and Dorthea "Tilda" (1845) Sorenson - Burke Co., ND - HELP PLEASE?
    2. Lars E. Oyane via
    3. Dear Listers! Oyane

    1. [NOR] Nils Jorpeland - accident reported in Skandinaven 1916 - more details available?
    2. Lars E. Oyane via
    3. Dear Listers! The Stavanger Aftenblad Journal of Sep. 28, 1916 included a news item which I have read with great interest. It says as follows: ~~~~~ "Skandinaven" writes: A young Stavanger man named Nils Jorpeland, who worked for the Great Lake Dredge Co. out by Indiana Harbor, recently fell over board and drowned, noone knowing, how the accident could happen. Only three hours later he was found - dead. He was supposed to return home for Christmas. His father wanted to see him, so also his mother and his brothers and sisters - and now instead this sad message. Jorpeland was only 26 years old. ~~~~~ Can someone help me locate the original article from "Skandinaven"? I am interested in learning the following details ablut this man who emigrated in 1911 heading them for Norway, Dickey Co., ND: * The exact date of this incident? * And what would I write as the place of this accident (town in Indiana?)? * What kind of work should we say Nils was doing? Thanks a million for your assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

Holte of Snohomish Co., WA were married in Seattle, WA on Mar. 8, 1890 by Rev. C. O. Rosing! This has to be "my" Erick, but strangely enough, there is just nothing to be seen of this couple in any other sources. Maybe they moved directly to Portland, OR?
