    3. It is possible your friend does not understand the patronymic naming system? For reasons unfathomable to me, that's the first hurdle I have to explain to non-genealogy researchers who are interested in their Norwegian roots and know I have the information on their family as well as our mutual family. They can't quite grasp the fact that the patronym changes from one generation to the next (until one gets to the son who is named for the father, and then you have a double name, so to speak, like Ole Olsen or Ingebrigt Ingebrigtsen, etc.). With certain exceptions where people started using inherited family names (surnames as we know them), particularly in the cities, Norway did not go to a surname system until they passed a law mandating the change in 1923. I've worked with a few different kinds of "American name changes." One was a fellow who decided on an arbitrary name he liked and the siblings who arrived before and after him eventually adopted his new name choice, but in US census data they go back and forth between their original patronymic name and the new arbitrary name for a few decades. Luckily, the whole family knew the original name vs the name they now still carry. One woman who married into the line that married one branch of my family started out with Olsdatter in Norway, emigrated at age 11 with her father whose patronym Halvorsen became the American surname Halvorson (gleaning info on her was a nightmare at first because once I got it all straightened out, the info in her obit was mostly about her husband of the known name change I noted above). Her brothers, on the other hand, took the name of the farm on which they had lived as their American surname. One family who arrived in Wisconsin and made their way to northwestern Minnesota started out using the patronymic naming system (it's in the US census data), and while the father kept his own patronymic name, his sons kept their correct patronymic names, but their descendants were given the father's patronym which had become an American surname by then. With females, the American system of surnames does not accept datter as a suffix..., so they often became the sons of their father (so to speak) when whoever wrote names got the first part of the patronym correct (the father's name), but didn't/wouldn't write datter as a suffix and wrote son instead. Women would sometimes use their father's patronymic name as their American surname. Or the name of their birth farm. Or the name of the farm on which they last lived before they emigrated. There are several ways the name could have been different. And then... there's the matter of the names beginning with Christ/Krist in the church records. Sometimes the minister writing the names would substitute Christ/Krist with an X..., and you end up with Xoffer/Xopher, Xoffersen/Xophersen, Xoffersdatter/Xophersdatter, Xian, Xiansen/Xiansdatter. Then there are the interchangeable letters with Q/K, I/J... etc. It's understandable if you find the new site a bit difficult. I still do, too. The old Digitalarkivet site's search engine is much easier to use and there's an index of databases available in each fylke. I often wish the new site had the same lists with added info (the new site is not adding to the old indices). These are only a few pieces of trivia one must keep in one's head while doing genealogy research in Norway. Don't worry. It gets easier. :-) Beste, Bev On 2/14/2017 10:36 PM, Virginia Lindsey wrote: > Thanks Don and Reina for your information on the Christophersen family. 3. I think this may possibly be the wrong family because in 1875 in the census Reina found he was working as a blacksmith's apprentice/assistant. In 1880 when Carl Fredrik was born, he was still a smedsvend. I'm not sure, of course, but unless something happened where he could no longer do blacksmithing, it seems like an odd occupation change. The company boss asked him various questions about him and his education, but then asked him, "Vhat is tree times seven?" "22," Sven replied. After he left, he double-checked it on his calculator (he *knew* he should have taken it to the interview!) and realized he wouldn't get the job. About two weeks later, he got a letter that said he was hired for the job! Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but he was very curious. The next day, he went in and asked why he got the job, even though he got such a simple question wrong. The boss shrugged and said, "Vell, yew vere da closest." 3. Dear Jerry and other Listers! This challenge has rested in my mailbox since May of last year, but today I have become aware of an interesting fact: The death record of John N. Urness recorded on FamilySearch shows: Name John N. Urness Event Type DEATH Event Date 09 Apr 1910 Event Place Saint Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota Gender Male Age 6 Birth Year (Estimated) 1904 Father's Name Urness <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XP83-2TG> Mother's Name Thorsen <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XP83-2TP> This record suggests that John N. Urness wasn’t a new born baby, but a child 6 years of age, and his mother’s maiden name is given as Thorson! Members of this Urness family have always claimed there were TWO marriages involved, and this record appears to prove this! Was Jacob Nelson Urness (Hagen) in fact first married to a Thorson girl?? But where did they live? And why did the son die in St. Paul, MN? I can find no Urness-Thorson marriage!! Any suggestions regarding these questions will be more than welcome! 3. I am trying to help the children of a sweet 96 year old friend with their fathers genealogy as they plan a trip to Norway this year to follow his path. However, I am completely frustrated. Perhaps I am not using the Digitalarkivet correctly or ?? I am looking for information about the following: Carl Frederik Christoffersen -I have his baptism 4 April 1880 in Bragernes kirke, Drammen. I can find no other information about him. He did immigrate to the US. There is a last name change here. His parents Frederik Martinus Olsen I have his baptism 1 June 1857 Bragernes kirke, Drammen. No other information. He married Inger Elise Carlsen-no information on her at all. His parents Olaus Christoffersen. I have his baptism 26 February 1825 Stromso kirke, Drammen. No other information. He married Anne Kristine Olsdatter-no information on her at all. His parents, Christoffer Myhre and Elen Maria Johansdatter-no information. I have been unable to find marriages, information on any of the women nor any of the people on the 1865, 1875 or 1885 censuses. Where am I going wrong? Thank you for any help. Virginia Lindsey

    3. Lars, I am sending the following things which I came across just in case you haven't already seen them. In the 1895 Minnesota census Herbert is living with his fatherand family and is shown as being 13 and born in Minnesota. On March 9, 1901 Herbert enlisted in the Army and gave his birth place as Minneapolis and his age as 21 according to the US Army Register of Enlistments. In 1914 he and Luella are living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota according to the City Directory. In 1915 there is a Herbert L Carroll living in South Dakota that was born in 1882 in Michigan whose father was born in New York. DeForest was born in New York. The census shows him as married. I found Luella living in Minneapolis in 1936 in the City Directory. She is listed as being the Widow of Herbert L, clerk for Soo Line, living at 2531 Jackson. May not mean she was really a widow as many times I've seen separated or divorced women calling themselves "widows". I, like you, can't find Herbert anywhere after 1915. 3. Lars, I found DeForest on Page 9 of the Minneapolis Star for Tuesday, September 13, 1921. There was no obituary, just a death notice which said "DeForest J Carroll, 77, Soldier's Home". It didn't even give a date of death. I could find no obituary for any days before or after this. I found Horton Green Carroll on Page 16 of the Argus-Leader for Tuesday, May 17, 1938 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Again, I couldn't find an obituary. You probably already know, but there is a Find A Grave memorial for him at https://findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=39449153. Bill On Mon, Feb 13, 2017 at 04:49 pm, Lars E. 3. Alfred Adams' death record states he died at Providence Hospital three hours after the incident. chief cause of death: fractured bones of face and skull; contributing cause of death: lifelong history of epilepsy. It looks more likely it was a medical issue rather than a criminal event since the contributing cause would have listed an assault or accident etc. It also states Alfred had lived in Seattle for 25 years and was 36 years of age. 3. Dear Sarah, Bill and other Listers! Thank you very much for your efforts trying to identify and find further information about Alfred Adams! It is interesting to read he had resided in Seattle, WA for 25 years at the time of his death, and still there is absolutely no sign of him there before 1900! I do suspect, however, he be identical to this gentleman from the 1880 census of Eagle Creek precinct, Clackamah Co., OR: JONES, E. D. 55 OH NY NY farmer ADAMS, Alferd 15 MO MO MO servant And this Alfred is probably the one who in 1870 at the age of 5, born in MO, was a (foster?) child with Jacob and Anna Elizabeth Ochsenbein of Swiss origin farming in Bogle township, Gentry Co., MO. The Ochsenbeins moved in the 1870’s to Milwaukie, Clackamas Co., OR where Jacob died as a widower May 16, 1884. It sounds like Alfred Adams’ life story is a hard one to trace… Thanks again for your great interest and efforts in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Listers, following up on previous messages about Sons of Norway activities, I wanted to let you know about a couple of things coming up.  This is not a comprehensive list, but includes things in which I am personally involved. On Saturday, February 18, I will be conducting a Norwegian genealogy class/workshop in Kennewick, Washington, for our local Sons of Norway lodge here in the Tri-Cities.  I realize this is probably not near any other listers, but if by some chance you should have an interest in attending, please contact me for the details. There is a minimal fee for attendance, but we still have plenty of room to add attendees.  On Saturday, March 11, the Bothell Sons of Norway lodge will hold their annual Heritage Day.  Listers in the Puget Sound area may be interested in attending, and admission is free (although attendees will almost certainly want to buy food and baked goods).  A full description of all the activities is included on the Bothell Sons of Norway webpage.  I will be there to help people with their genealogy or just to talk about family history with attendees, as I do every year.  If you should happen to attend, please drop by to say hello. Then, on Friday and Saturday, April 7 & 8, I will be conducting two days of genealogy classes/workshops in Spokane for the Sons of Norway lodge there, with likely participation also from members in the Coeur d'Alene lodge.  There is a minimal fee for attending but reservations will be required and daily attendance will be limited to ensure that I have time to work with every attendee on specific questions they may have.  If anyone is interested in attending one of those days, you can contact me for details. I should clarify that I participate in Sons of Norway events like this as a cultural resource volunteer and that the fees that are collected go to the Sons of Norway lodges hosting the events.  And attendance is NOT limited only to Sons of Norway members. I have learned a lot from the Norway List over the years, and it is fun and very fulfilling to be able to show others how to pursue their heritage.  And, of course, I always mention the Norway List as one of the great resources out there to help people.
