    1. [NOR] Veterans of the American Civil War
    2. Clark Pederson
    3. Hei, Listers! I have come across a distant relative of an uncle by marriage who apparently served in the Civil War. I searched archives for a database, but get many links that are no longer good, as well as the Wisconsin sites. Are there any new links that I can search to confirm this person's role? Your help is always greatly appreciated! Clark in Japan --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

    3. Clark, The National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System contains an index of the men who served in the Civil War https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers.htm If you find him there, use google or any search engine to search for the unit. There are histories online of many of the units. Fold3.com has most Civil War service records, but they are a subscription site. I don't know if they offer a free trial. I think ancestry.com now owns it. Some libraries offer free access. 1. [NOR] Today' Ole
    2. John Ferman
    3. Ole, the smoothest-talking Norske in the Minnesota National Guard, and a natural born salesman, got called up to active duty. Ole's first assignment was in a military induction center. Because he was a good talker, they assigned him the duty of advising new recruits about government benefits, especially the GI life insurance, to which they were entitled. The officer in charge soon noticed that Ole was getting a 99% sign-up rate for the more expensive supplemental form of GI insurance. This was remarkable, because it cost these low-income recruits $30 per month for the higher coverage, compared to what the government was already providing at no charge. The officer decided he'd sit in the back of the room at the next briefing and observe Ole's sales pitch. Ole stood up before the latest group of inductees and said…"If you haf da normal GI insurans an' yew go tew Afghanistan an' get yourself killed, da governmen' pays yer beneficiary $20,000. If yew take out da supplemental insurans, vich cost yew only t'irty dollars a mont, den da governmen' got ta pay yer beneficiary $200,000! Now, Ole concluded..."Vich bunch yew tink dey gonna send ta Afghanistan first?” Sent from my iPad John Ferman Minneapolis, MN

    3. There is an "apostrophe" type of mark above the o, so the spelling should be Sønnev. Parents are Ole Engebretsen and Marte Turine [I don't see a patronym for her]. Godparents re Gunnil ?ina??? and Kjersti Rolandsdatter. The name Nils Lien is in the next column, but I think with a comma there after Rolandsdatter, Nils is probably one of the godparents. There is a Marte Thurine Svensdatter, age 7, in the household of Sven Trulsen and Kirstj Tronsdatter at Schartum, Sigdal Sogn, Sigdal Prestegjeld, Buskerud in the 1801 census. I do not know if she is the Marte Turine who is the mother of said Sønnev Olsdatter or not. You will need to do further research to determine that. http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=f18010621&gardpostnr=110&personpostnr=2036&merk=2036#ovre In the right age bracket to be Marte Turine's husband is an Ole Engebretsen, age 9, living at Flathuus, Krydsherret Sogn, Sigdal Prestegjeld, Buskerud (NB: spelling on father's name is Ingebret Andersen). I do not know if he is the father of Sønnev Olsdatter or not. You will need to do further research to determine that. http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=f18010621&gardpostnr=151&personpostnr=2950&merk=2950#ovre Thron Christensen (you have dates correct), Parents: Christen Andersen and Kari [?To??d...] Schan???? Godparents: Christi Schan???, Helge Krogen, Engebret Krogen, Nils ???stad, and Ole Thorsen Krogen. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. He is mentioned in Ty in 1591, where he was a delegate to the kongehyllinga of Kristian IV, see volume 1, page 179. Interestingly this passage was translate by request 15 years ago on this forum. " One should perhaps note that "kongehyllinga" was much more than a celebration of the king. The cermony known as "kongehylling" was the populations (nobilty, clergy, merchants and farmers etc.) formal acknowledgement of the king or king-to-be as the lawful king of the country. You will find references to this in medieval Norwegian history and laws. Greetings Kaare Seeberg Sidselrud " mvh, Jostein
