Thank you Bev! I thought it was spam, so I did not try to open it. It would be nice if the sender post a few words with a link. Because very often only a link in a message must be considered as spam. If you need data on ancestors in the Inner Sognefjord Neil's database is great. His database helped a great deal in researching my ancestors. Thanks Neil, Terry Gaddis -----Original Message----- From: Neil Hofland Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2017 10:23 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NOR] Greetings from Kneel Hi All, I just thought I would let you know I am still here and reading messages every day. I don't post anything because there never seems to be anything I can help with. If any of you are interested in the Inner Sognefjord you might want to take a look at norwayancetors.com. You don't have to sign in as it is open to all. Just click on Surames and start searching, learning, and using the program. You can't hurt anything. Remember all the spelling variations. Each Tree is a separate database. Almost all of the individuals from existing bygdeboks have been entered at least down to the emigrants. Balestrand has only one updated bygdebok so two thirds of the gards in Balestrand are only in the circa 1930's volume written by Laberg. I did the best I could with Laberg (who was a genius) and it is pretty good. The Norum parish in Sogndal doesn't have a bygdebok yet, so the Norum people are missing. Then we have Lars and Luster. I am on page 469 of volume 11 and will finish it in a few months. Then I have to wait for volume 12 that Lars is working on now. Give him all the help you can. His bygdeboks are a remarkable achievement. I am just hoping he finishes volume 12 and the kommune publishes it while I am still alive. :-) (I'm pushing 83.) So, greetings to all. Hi Linda, Ancestral Quest (AQ) is just one of many genealogical programs. FTM is also a genealogical program. RootsMagic is another one. The company that makes AQ is the same one that made and maintained PAF for the Mormons. It is sort of a beefed up PAF. Very impressive, especially the one of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit at the foundation they created. This is clearly an important issue to them and one they have great impact on. Think what could be done in other countries if the same compassion were shown by people in similar positions. Linda... A simple excel spread sheet might accomplish the job on one page. Names separated by generations in the first column and other columns to identify births/deaths, male/female, age at death, Alz genes (Yes or No) and any other matters you think are useful. Unless I am missing something I do not see what features a genealogy program would add to the simple list you want to develop. Linda -- You might download the free version of RootsMagic - called RootsMagic Essentials. You can play with it and see if it meets your needs. Linda - Does FTM have a Cause of Death category? Or a Medical category? In my Reunion 7 program (Reunion only works in Macs), there is a pre-programmed Cause of Death. The Medical category is there and one can add it or not, as one sees fit. When I listed the various medical issues I've had through the years I put each one under a Medical heading, starting with my first hospitalization through to the most recent ablation and pacemaker procedures in Nov last year (I am now completely pacemaker dependent and have a monitor for my pacemaker), complete with dates. If you have a Medical category, I'd recommend putting the Alzheimer's diagnosis there (if it's official). If it's included as a contributory Cause of Death on the death certificate (it sometimes is in the DCs I have, or, when the DCs are old enough enough from before the days of the Alzheimer's category, it generally lists senility - in one case an uncle-by-marriage had Lewy-Body dementia, similar to Alzheimer's but different, and I put that in the Medical category when my aunt told me about his official diagnosis). In Reunion one can also create new categories not listed, so when I saw Land Grants were not listed, I added that category, as well as Utflytting (dates are different from the day of embarkation at the seaport). I don't know much about FTM. I did have an older version on my first computer (now not in use), so I don't know if you can add categories or not. When I found FTM unsuitable (I couldn't make a web site with it, only add the info to where they wanted it to be) I just didn't use it except for the extra CDs that came with it. I don't know how the DNA info is listed since I've not done that yet, but if I ever do I'll just add the category in my Reunion program. Halvor, Rodney, Edward and Bev Thank you for helping to read those comments on that Tolga/Os record for Peder Jacobsen's emigration. Some of the penmanship can be a real challenge - especially when Norwegian is not your native language. But, strangely enough, it is somewhat comforting to know that it not just us "foreigners" who struggle with the writing on some of these records!!! I suspect my cursive writing isn't a whole lot better - often I can't read my own notes and they are in English, my native language. Sigh...
