Dear Listers! This lady is giving me a hard time: Helvig Fredrikke Eriksdotter Natvig, born in Aardal Co., Norway Sep. 17, 1842, emigrated in 1863 to Columbia Co., WI where on July 25, 1863 she married Hans Monson, born in Laerdal Co., Norway Aug. 10, 1823. After several years of residing in Bristol township, Dane Co., WI the couple moved in the early 1870's to a farm in Clayton township, Mower Co., MN, but about 1883 they moved to North Ottawa township, Grant Co., MN where Hans died Jan. 6, 1894. On several occasions Helvig is called Helen Monson, but ** the 1900 census has her in North Ottawa township, Grant Co., MN as Helvig HANSON aged 60 residing as a widow with the Kirkeide family, and ** the 1905 census has her in Elk Lake township, Grant Co., MN as Helvig MENSON (ancestry’s interpretation!) aged 66 residing with Ole Torstenson family That’s the very last I see of her. I cannot see that her death is recorded in Grant Co., MN og anywhere else in MN, so what became of her? Any suggestions would be more than welcome! Thanks a million in advance for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Dear Doris, Jerry, Nancy and other Listers! Thank you very much for your messages in regard to my Roland «Robert» A. Urness question. As I said in my latest message, he is NOT to be mixed with his cousin by the same name who lived in Durand, WI. «My» Roland «Robert» was never married, at least he was not by 1926, and since the last record we have of him is from that year, there are no Canadian census records of more recent dates which would «catch» him! Let me just repeat what I wrote about him in my message from Jan. 6: >>> Roland Anfindson Teigen aka Robert A. Urness >>> born Feb. 14, 1878 in Hafslo parish, Luster Co., Norway >>> emigrated 1899 to Stanley, Chippewa Co., WI (lumber yard laborer) >>> lived 1920 in Koochiching Co., MN (logger) >>> lived 1918 and 1927 at Casselton, Cass Co., ND (farm laborer) >>> >>> then moved in 1927 as a single man to Saskatoon, SK where he knew someone named Gunvald(?) Thompson, at least that’s what I believe it says in the migration record on ancestry.com! >>> >>> But what happened to Robert Urness after 1927? >>> >>> When his father died in Norway in 1933, there is no mention of Robert atall, so maybe he had died by then? Robert may of course have broken all contact with his family, but the most likely answer is that he died some time between 1927 and 1933…. By the way, the Teigen name is from a section of the Kroken farm in Hafslo parish where the family used to live, but Teigen was probably never used as a family name! Thanks again for your wonderful assistance in this matter! I will keep my fingers well crossed that «something» may show up about him. Maybe a newspaper report? Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Dear Lenise! I have been looking a little bit around, and the only approximate «hit» I come up with is from the passenger record of the «Polynesian» which arrived at Halifax, NS in March of 1890 where two, apparently brothers, came along: Knut Jensen, laborer, aged 20 Martin Jensen, laborer, aged 18 It doesn’t say they came from Norway, but there seems to be a number of Norwegians arriving on the same vessel… Their destination was Marshfield, I presume Marshfield, WI. May I suggest you put this inquiry on the Norwegian Digital Archives Website? There are numerous Norwegian researchers who follow that list, and I have experienced wonderful results with similar inquiries! I can help you post it, if you agree? Very sincerely yours, Lars E. I know this is a really long shot, since I have almost nothing about this man to help find him in Norway, but I am looking for a Martin Jensen, born in Norway about 1873-1875, parents names’ Jens Jensen and Bergete Olson (Per records from Oregon State Soldiers Home). Unfortunately I have nothing more about his life in Norway, other than in the 1930 census he claimed to have immigrated in 1890. I have searched passenger records in Ancestry and not found any matches that look real promising. I searched the 1875 census index at Digitalarkivet without finding anyone that fit, though someone with more creative thinking than I and a better command of the site might be able to find him using better filters or search parameters. I searched the 1885 census index and found a couple possibilities, but none of them were living with parents so I couldn’t confirm if it was the right Martin. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a good idea of his life in the U.S., though there are some holes. Just a brief rundown of what I know so no one wastes time looking for information I already have. immigrated possibly about 1890 (per 1930 census) June 1898 - was living in Oregon and enlisted in the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry, was sent to the Philippines June 1899 - discharged from 2nd Oregon Infantry and almost immediately re-enlisted in the 35th U.S. Infantry, remaining in the Philippines until discharged March 1901. 1900 - I assume he was in the Philippines, based on military service record, so have been unable to find him in U.S. census December 1904 - married Ethel May Miller in Crawford, Kansas 1905 - Kansas State Census - birth place Norway about 1873 - wife May, daughter Dortha (since he and May married only four months prior to this - daughter may be from a previous marriage?) 1910 census - Martin and May are not found, but Dortha was living with May’s parents James and Matilda Miller. Family stories claim they went back and forth to Canada, so possibly they were there at this time? I do not have access to Canadian records. 1915 Kansas census - Martin Jenson (wife May, daughters Dorothy and Pearl) living in Walnut Grove, Kansas. 1920 - suspect they were in Canada at this time - no record found in U.S. census 1925 Kansas census - May living with daughter Louise in Pittsburg Kansas. Apparently Martin is out of the picture as May is listed as widow even though I have evidence he was still alive. 1930 census - May had remarried and was still living in Kansas. Martin can be found as a resident in the Oregon State Soldiers Home in Roseburg OR. 1927-1932 - Oregon State Soldiers Home records show he was admitted and discharged multiple times between Jan 1927 and Jan 1932 when he was transferred to the National Soldiers Home in Sawtelle, CA, where he died September 16, 1932 and he is buried in the National Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA. Find A Grave Memorial# 80892633 If anyone has access to Canadian records and happens to find the family either living in Canada or at border crossings, that would be appreciated, but what I really am hoping for are some pointers to find Martin in Norway.

Lars, Both my grandfathers worked on building the railroads, one from Sask. to ND, MN and WI, the other from Alberta to Washington State, both from around 1912 to 1925. Both were involved in the logging industry, one as a surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. The other worked for a logging company, creating new towns that brought in railroad ties to build the railroad further west (Sask and Alb are prairie provinces, without trees at the time), and to build new towns. In fact, both my parents were born in these new towns in 1915. This just verifies your info that he might have moved back and forth across the border for work. There were US censuses in 1910 and 1920. In the prairie provinces there were censuses in 1911, 1916, 1921, 1926. All of these are in Ancestry if you have access to the International versions. If you don't have access, I can look it up for you. Complete names and years of birth and migrations of all family names would make it easier. Teigen is a farm name, I'm assuming. Or a subfarm? I know someone named Teigen who's Norwegian but I never asked him that question. It doesn't sound like a patronymic. Urness also sounds like a farm name, though. That confuses me. Is it possible that your Roland/Robert died in Minnesota? They have good death records. I could look him up there as well. Any other clues? Do you know if/when he was naturalized? Was he ever married? Did he have children? Doris On Sat, May 6, 2017 at 8:55 AM, Lars E. Dear Greg and other Listers! A very belated thank you to Greg for your reply to this inquiry of mine from January. I have had this message pending in my inbox not knowing what to do next, so I decided today I would send it again. This Roland aka Robert A. Urness just has to be somewhere, and I have run up against a «brick wall» trying to find him. If he did return to ND, as Greg suggests, he cannot have stayed there, since no Robert Urness appears to be recorded in the ND death index. If anyone has any ideas at all as to what may have become of Roland/Robert, I would be very happy to learn about it! Obviously his date and place of death would be «top priority» to me… PS: This Roland/Robert had a 1st cousin also named Roland aka Robert A. Urness (1875-1958) who lived in Durand, WI, but he is NOT the one I am looking for here... Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. He seemed to move around quite a bit, probably for work. By this time, the railroad line from North Dakota up into Saskatchewan was in place and operating. It would have been easy to come back down into the U.S. to resume work for someone he had previously worked for. > > > Greg Holter > > > From: Lars E. However, if one has a specific date and knows that something should be in the paper for or about that date, I can see where it might be worth a subscription for a while, especially if one had a lot of relatives living there. Knowing there is such a huge Norwegian population in Minnesota, perhaps this might be an avenue some might find interesting. Beste, Bev
Mange takk for sharing the video with us, Hans. Jeg elsker the sights and sounds of Norway! I take it this is the Trollstigen Highway that is being plowed in the video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e83KACnF9o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSsUtPfw_VU This is spectacular! Well, all the scenery I've seen of Norway is spectacular, but ... Wow! Driving that highway must be nerve-wracking! I loved living in the mountains when I lived in the western US, and I've driven mountain roads in the US, but only one had a serpentine highway, although it wasn't nearly as long as this one, nor was the view this spectacular! Thanks, again! Dear Listers, After the excellent result of yesterday’s obituary inquiry about the Adams couple near Willmar, MN I am attempted to try their only daughter and her husband as well. Maybe their obituaries can also be found? Osmund SONDERSON born May 31, 1866 in MN died June 5, 1946 near Tacoma, WA buried at Spicer, Kandiyohi Co., MN Ideen SONDERSON born Apr., 1872 in Kandiyohi Co., MN died Feb. 27, 1943 in Tacoma, WA buried at Spicer, Kandiyohi Co., MN This couple lived near Willmar, Kandiyohi Co., MN until the late 1920’s when they moved to Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA, and they were brought back for burial. According to an ancestry.com family tree obituaries were published for Osmund and Ideen in the Tacoma, WA paper, for Osmund on June 5, 1946 and for Ideen on Mar. 1, 1943, but I am unable to access either one…! Maybe obituaries were also published in the Willmar, MN paper? Thanks a million in advance for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Dear Mark and other Listers! I am amazed! Thanks a million, Mark, for such a quick reply to my latest inquiry about the obituaries from Kandiyohi Co., MN! They are very complete, except we don’t learn much about Lucretia’s Norwegian background… However, the 1910 census shows she emigrated in 1857 as did Lucris Eriksdotter Sonnesyn from Hafslo, born in Hafslo July 5, 1835. Lucretia Adams’ birthdate is given as Aug. of 1837, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she «lied» about her age as long as her husband Emerson was so much younger…!? Thanks again, Mark, for your wonderful assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Dear Jerry and other Listers! Thank you very much, Jerry, for your latest message showing the Kins family in Griggs Co., ND in 1885. In the meantime I have talked to the Clerk of Court in Griggs Co., ND, and they found some interesting facts: Apparently Henry Peter came first, since he purchased land in Bartley township, Griggs Co., ND in January of 1883, then selling it to his father in 1884. Later he got the land back from his father! No probate records were found for Martha or Jens Kins in Griggs Co., ND, but then they made a statewide search, and they discovered that Jens Kins had homesteaded land in Malcolm township, McLean Co., ND, and there was a probate record for him there showing he died on Oct. 12, 1908. Unfortunately, this latter probate record doesn’t show Martha’s death date, but she obviously died in Griggs Co., ND between 1885 and 1898! Now, with this information, maybe an OBITUARY can be found for Jens Kins in McLean Co., ND? And again it might be an idea to check cemetery records in Griggs Co., ND? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! It is almost solved… Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Dear Jerry and other Listers! Thank you very much, Jerry, for your message which just arrived. However, I am sorry to say, there is no death record for Jens Kins in Buffalo Co., WI in 1901. We know he was alive in 1901, and I believe the source comes from Buffalo Co., WI, but Jens had left many years before… In my manuscript I had a note years ago about this, and someone «picked it up» and published it as a death year in a family tree. Very annoying, but I experience things like that happen all the time… So it remains a «true mystery» when and where Jens and Martha died… Maybe someone could check the cemetery record book for Griggs Co., ND? At least Martha MAY be recorded in it…? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E.
