Rollie, The state of South Dakota did not start keeping vital records until 1905. Some County level records were recorded before then, but I personally think if the dates are not on the gravestone this is going to be a hard pull. Early county records are kept by the state, but I do not see them as searchable. Here you will find contact information for any records held for Union County. I suggest contacting them. Perhaps they can find something for you. Mange Tusen Takk, Hans! I have forwarded them on to my friend. I know she will be thrilled with this info! I'm going to write to you off-list with some Myhre info on the one family I keep running into. Turns out they were near neighbors of my ancestors and relatives, so they all likely knew each other. I know there are multiple Myhre farms so they may not be related to you, but maybe you know someone who is tracking the family. Dear Friends, I am looking for a date of death for Kari Hovland born 06 November 1809 on Hovland, part of the Naddvik gard just east of Ardal, Sognefjord, Norway. She was the wife of Hans Orbech Oysteinsson Hovland his dates are Birth 1809 • Aardal i Sogn, Norway Death 1851 • Naddvik, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. In 1870 she emigrated with their daughter Maren Hanson Ørbech Hovland Birth 20 OCT 1835 • Aardal i Sogn, Norway Death 15 DEC.1882 • Union County South Dakota and Maren's husband, Ola Andersson Hereid Birth 24 DECEMBER 1835 • Aardal i Sogn, Norway Death 23 OCT 1906 • Union County South Dakota. Ole Maren and Kari grave including photo can be found at; https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Hereid&GSiman=1&GScid=1973015&GRid=68575158& What this does not show is Kari, now going as Carrie O Hoveland date of death. 1880 census https:// www.ancestry.com/interactive/6742/4240107-00035/34594439?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/8671474/person/-864457915/facts/citation/194059205/edit/record shows Kari/Carrie as now going by Carin Olson and the Hereid's using the last name Anderson (Olaf and Marin, the childrens names prove that this is still the right family no matter what last name they are using). So we know Kari is still alive in 1880. Can anyone help me find a date of death for Kari? Your help is most appreciated Rollie Natvig
Hei all, I finally found the newspaper articles about this Norwegian's killing. I had asked the list a couple of times so I thought that I would provide "closure" so that anyone losing sleep would be relieved. I have only looked at the Daily News for the articles of interest but there may be other newspapers at other times available in the digital collection. The "Bernhardt Rasmundsen" shooting story is on page 8, column 4. http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00075893/00540/8j mvh, Jostein

Dear Listers, I have a real challenge for you today which I have tried to solve for 35 years. Maybe now it’s time to finally figure out what happened to this guy? Jens Thorson Hauge, aka Jens or James Thompson (his father’s name was Thor Thomasson!), born in Luster Co., Norway Nov. 3, 1852, emigrated in 1868 to Blooming Prairie township, Dane Co, WI where he was a farm laborer with his aunt Betsy Johnson by the time of the 1870-census. He MAY be identical to a carpenter named Jens Thompson who lived single in Chicago, IL in 1880. Then when his mother died in Norway in 1904, Jens’ brother-in-law Torbjorn Heltne of Nelson, WI, an 1893 emigrant, wrote a letter to the probate court stating the following: «Jens Thompson had lived in Vernon Co., WI, then in La Crosse, WI, before moving to Minneapolis, MN. There he was married and did have a family, but about 1892 he left the family for Moorhead, MN, then on to Idaho, but he supposedly died at Spokane, WA about 1895». When I first tried to work on this challenge back in the early 1980’s, I had no records to consult trying to find out what really happened to Jens. Nowadays it should be easier, but is it possible to find out what the probate court never managed to find 113 years ago? What happened to Jens and what about his family in Minneapolis, MN? Ancestry.com shows these marriages in Hennepin Co., MN: ** James H. Thompson and Mary Carbine - married Nov. 15, 1885 ** James H. Thompson and Ella Smith - married Nov. 16, 1885 And I find a birth at the St. Paul Lutheran church in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 1, 1886 of Christian, son of Jens Thomassen and wife Marit! But I have no idea whether any of these records pertain to «my» Jens! Let me add that Jens emigrated in 1868 along with a brother: Nels Thorson Hauge, aka Nels Thompson(?), born in Luster Co., Norway Mar. 4, 1845, but he supposedly had died prior to 1904 leaving no children! Any suggestions in regard to Jens/James Thompson will be very much appreciated! Thanks a million and again: a very happy syttendemai celebration to all of you! Very sincerely yours, Lars E Oyane

Hi Hans - Thank you! :-) I've copied and pasted your query in an email to my friend who is researching Oline Ottosdatter/Ottesdatter Fjeldberg's line which connects to someone she is related to. I know she works with family groupings like I do, so it wouldn't surprise me if she said yes and will add the info to her database. She has a large well-documented genealogy database, and she and I have worked together on each of our own genealogy lines as well as the side lineages if either of us gets stuck and needs help. She's at work right now so I'm not sure when she will get back to me. Beste, Bev On 5/17/2017 3:24 AM, Hans Myhre wrote: > I accept. Do you need more about Hans Ottersen and Agnethe > Olsdatter? You are correct, Halvor, and I appreciate you letting me know. I feel very contrite. My deepest apologies to Hans! I saw the H... and didn't think or read further, but oddly enough I told my friend who is connected to this family that 'Hans sent the info' so she knows where I got it. I'm not as good at multitasking as I used to be in my youth, but that's still no excuse for not getting your name correct. I normally remember your last name because there was a family with the same name and spelling (Myhre) in the same county not all that far where I was born and raised; I didn't know them growing up, but I was aware of the family with the same name. They lived some +/- 25 miles from where our family farm was and they were near other relatives who lived by the town where we went to the doctor and that town has the only hospital within a fifty mile radius and most people in the area were born there. I'm sorry, Hans. Please accept my belated gratitude to you, the correct person, for your excellent work in finding the information for my genealogy friend. The person recording the information puts different years in the column for Utflytting, but records them in different years, and that is consistent for a ten year period that I searched; it's as though he has a stack of papers from many different years, then sits down and records them when he has the time; they're not in chronological order. > > In the old Digitalarkivet database for transcriptions, I found Utflytting records for Oline Ottosdatter's siblings moving to Eidsfold, > Østfold: Ole (1880), Karoline (1882), and two records for two different months of 1884 for Helene (one of which I suspect should technically be for Oline - Eidsfold is the only place I found with the location name Fjeldberg, which is the name she used as her American surname when she married Christian Evensen Solien in 1895 in Polk County, Minnesota (she uses the spelling Lina for her first name, middle initial O, and other records show her birth name as Ottoson [sic]). Dear Listers! This is a real challenge that I have been working with for years. Maybe now, with the numerous newspapers that have been digitized, is it possible to figure out what happened to this guy? Edward Sidenbender, son av Charles Thomas aka Thomas C. Sidenbender from IN (1857-1945) and Guro aka Julia nee Beim from Norway (1864-1891), was born in St. Paul, MN Apr. 20, 1883, but came at the age 7 to a local orphanage in St. Paul, MN where he grew up. His two younger brothers, Clarence and John, were adopted in 1895 by a family in Dodge Co., MN, but for some unknown reason they didn’t take Edward, and in the 1900 census we find Edward Senderbender as a farm laborer with the Alfred Frederick family in Dunbar township, Faribault Co., MN, then said to be born in MN in December of 1882! He is no longer with the Fredericks in 1905 or 1910, but nobody knows what happened to him! I should add that his father Charles Thomas aka Thomas C. Sidenbender also disappeared from St. Paul, MN in the early 1890’s, and he didn’t she up in any census records until 1930, then residing with a cousin in Vigo Co., IN. He later moved to Tampa, FL, and he died at a Soldier’s Home at Bay Pines, FL June 18, 1945. (He had fought in the US Army against the Indians at Ft. Yates, ND in the late 1870’s!) Could it be that father and son stayed in contact between 1900 and 1930? I have no idea… Any suggestions would be more than welcome! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

Eventually she emigrated to America. Three of her siblings moved to Eidsvold, and while I haven't found an utflytting record, I think Oline made it there, too. It's the only connection to the name Fjeldberg I can find (it's a hospital in Eidsvold), which is what she used as a surname in America. American records have her "from Lillehammer" but neither I nor the person who is connected to her can find a record of her or her family in Lillehammer. > > Mange takk! > Bev > > > > > > Norwaylist Archiveshttp://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=norway > > RESUBSCRIBE UNSUB > http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/NOR/NORWAY.html > > guidelines http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/guidelines.htm > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > Norwaylist Archiveshttp://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=norway > > RESUBSCRIBE UNSUB > http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/NOR/NORWAY.html > > guidelines http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/guidelines.htm > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
