    1. [NORTON] Norton DNA Project
    2. Does the entire lineage have to be all male for this to work? My great grandmother was a Norton, so would it work on one of her grandson's, or would I have to locate male descendants from one of her brothers? Also, can the same results be used to participate in other surname DNA projects? Thanks, Kay

    3. The entire lineage must be male. Only males have the "Y" chromosome, so your mother did not receive her father's "Y" chromosome, only her brothers did, and their sons and their sons... The results only are applicable to the male line. It cannot be applied to other surnames than the male line. For instance, it has no relation to your mother's father's line, or to your father's mother's line, etc. There is also a test for the female line which can be taken by either male or female, of mitochondrial DNA which one receives only form one's mother. This DNA comes from your mother's mother's mother's..... and so is not associated with a surname because the surname changes with each generation from mother to daughter. But it can be used to help establish relationships. If you are interested in other surnames, you must find either all male or all female lineages back to the ancestor of interest (depending on whether that ancestor is male or female). Hope I've made it clearer (clear as mud perhaps :) David Norton ----- Original Message ----- From: <KAYNLINN@aol.com> To: <NORTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 24, 2003 7:05 AM Subject: [NORTON] Norton DNA Project > Does the entire lineage have to be all male for this to work?
