She was the third of 10 children born to John Norton (born in Holland in 1767) and Jane Noss (of Lancaster county). Her parents settled in Mifflin county in 1790 and are both buried on their home farm. Her father died in 1842. John Norton, her father, was born in Holland and emigrated to America in boyhood and settled in Lancaster county, where he became a weaver's apprentice and where he lived during the Revolutionary war. After moving in 1790 to Mifflin county, he ran a farm and blacksmith shop. I believe that this was in Wayne township in Mifflin county.
