His parents were almost certainly Robert Norton and Anne Hare. His Grandfather was Thomas Norton, M.P., also known as the "Rackmaster General of London". William was, if I recall correctly, Robert's second cousin. Dionis Cholmeley was a real blueblood and subsequent generations found it pereferable to "mistake" their son, Thomas, who never came to America, with Robert's son, who did. No one wanted to be descended from Thomas, who was somewhat of a monster. There's considerable evidence for this. One good point is that in William's 1622 will he refers to Mary, a daughter of Thomas. The Mary who was Thomas the Emigrant's daughter wasn't born until 8 years after William's death in 1622. Both families lived in Sharpenhoe.
