The earliest settlers of this neighborhood were the Buckland, Parker, Converse, Cleaveland, Bartholomew, Davis, NORTON, Cutting, White, and Bellows families. (etc.) Page 56 KING’S CORNER This is a settlement in the north-west part of Barnston, on the road between Stanstead Plain and East Hatley. Ira King, one of the early settlers, opened a tavern about 1810, and another hotel and and store were afterwards built. For a time, Hiram Davis and branches of the King and NORTON families were engaged in trade. Etc. Page 327 FAMILY OF THOMAS CHAPMAN, MD. Thomas Chapman married Betsey Wood, b. Apr 12, 1781. She subsequently married Issachar Norton, Junior. three children listed Lucius b. 1809 m. Lydia Leavitt: Elizabeth W., b. 1810 and Thomas b. 1814. Issachar Norton m. Lorana Paine. They settled in Barnston in 1805. He died in 1825. She d. in 1843. Their children were Seth, Shadrach, Issachar, Samuel, m. Orpha Heath; Eldad, m. Betsey Heath; Olive, m. Roswell Smith; Laura, m. John Henry; Roswell, was drowned in Vermont; Roswell, 2nd, m. a Miss Lane, and Elon , who m. Sarah Corey. These families settled mostly in Barnston and the neighbouring towns. SETH NORTON Seth Norton, b. in Bennington, Vt., Dec. 31, 1778 – m. Lydia Sprague, b. in Methuen, Mass., May 2, 1783. The settled in Barnston in 1803. He was a millwright, and consequently changed his residence frequently. He d. July 8, 1831. She d. in 1849. CHILDREN: Clarissa, b. April 22, 1806 Frances, b. Mar 21, 1807 – d. Nov. 5, 1850 Matilda, b. June 9, 1809 Olive, b. Dec. 21, 1810 Lydia, b. Feb. 3, 1813 – d. July 9, 1849 Charlotte b. Dec. 20, 1815 Eleanor, b. March 27, 1818 Maria, b. Oct. 20, 1831 One child d. in early youth. SHADRACK NORTON b. in Bennington, Vt., Nov. 20, 1781 – m. Abigail Porter, b. in Stockbridge, Mass., Sept. 8, 1781. They settled in Barnston, in 1803. He d. June 11, 1838. She d. Feb. 28, 1838. CHILDREN: Amelia, b. Dec. 9, 1803 Arunah, b. Dec. 1, 1805 Martin, b. Feb. 17, 1808 Lorana, b. Aug. 21, 1810 Porter, b. June 30, 1813 Arthur, b. Jan. 20, 1815 Sarah E., b. Dec. 14, 1819 Julia, b. Alpril 7, 1822 One child d. young. ISSACHAR NORTON, JUN. Issachar Norton, Jr., b. in Newhaven, Vt., in 1783 – m. Betsey Porter, a native of Middlebury, Vt. They settled in Barnston in 1803. She d. in 1811. July 11, 1815, he m. Betsey, widow of Dr. J. Chapman. He d. June 21, 1850. She d. May 23, 1859. One child by 1st marriage, Orissa, b. Sept 6, 1810 – m. George Thomas. CHILDREN BY SECOND MARRIAGE: Issachar 3rd. b. June 7, 1816 Harriet, b. June 19, 1818 – m. Abner Foster Corbin, b. Nov. 15, 1819 One child d. young. ARUNAH NORTON, Eldest son of Shadrach Norton, was b. Dec. 1,1805 – m. Fanny Huntoon, b. in Coventry, Vt., June 28, 1817. They settled in Barnston, removed to Coaticook, where he holds the office of captain of militia. CHILDREN: Ernest V., b. Oct. 8, 1839. Osmond O., b. Feb. 17, 1845 Annie M., b. July 20, 1847. Orissa Norton. They settled in Barford. Their children were Collostin, who m. Mary Bush; Harlow, m. Ellen Berland; Norton, M. Sally Drew; Newell, m. Catherine Burns; Betsey, m. E. P.
