Here is what I know about my husband's Norton line. John Norton, Jr. or III (I have seen him listed both ways) b. July 1836 Newburyport, Essex, MA m. 1x ?? I am not sure if he was married before or not?? m. 2x Harriet Mary (Downs) Wells bet 1864-1870 place unknown d. after 1900 MA?? son of Joshua Norton, Jr. and Elizabeth (Woodman) Norton He joined the Civil War in 1861 from Boston, MA and was in A29th MA Inf., and filed for a penson Dec. 1900 from Boston, MA. Harriet Mary (Downs) b. Oct. 1841 Battle Creek, Calhoun, MI m. 1x William Wells 1860 Michigan m. 2x Joshua Norton bet. 1864-1870 b. bet. 1891-1900 MA?? daughter of David Joy Downs and Mary Ann (Pattison) Downs Children of Joshua and Harriet Norton - 1. Ashley David (Wells) Norton b. Aug. 1864 San Jose, Santa Clara, CA m. Abbie Caroline Kellogg Feb. 1887 Battle Creek, Calhoun, MI d. 1914 Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Battle Creek, Calhoun, MI in the Downs family plot. (His mother's family) He was the son of William Wells and Harriet Mary (Downs) Wells Norton. Joshua Norton adopted Ashely when he was a small boy. I don't think there was a formal adpotion. Later in life Ashley went by David Ashely Norton. (This is my husband's line) 2. Harriet "Hattie" Norton b. Jan. 1872 IL (?Rutland, La Salle County, IL?) m. ? d. after 1900 MA? 3. David Woodman Norton (aka Woodman D. Norton) b. May 1875 IL (?Rutland, La Salle County, IL?) m. Elizabeth D. Robinson 18 Sept 1907 MA d. ?? 4. Helen "Nellie" Norton b. March 1878 NE (?Aurora, Hamilton County, NE?) m. ?? d. after 1900 MA 5. Elizabeth "Bessie" Norton b. Feb. 1881 NE (?Aurora, Hamiltion County, NE?) m. ? d. after 1900 MA? I have been able to track this family because of the following censuses - 1860 Boston, Suffolk County, MA 1870 Rutland, La Salle County, IL 1880 Aurora, Hamilton County, NE 1891 Chatham, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, CAN 1900 Boston, Suffolk County, MA 1910 ?? 1920 ?? I did find the son (David Woodman Norton) in the 1920 census 1920 Wellesley, Norfolk, MA Norton, David W., husband, 44, b. IL Norton, Elizabeth, wife, 35, b. MA Norton, David W. Jr., son, 11, b. MA I was able to find David W. Norton, Jr. later in life, he went to Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge and graduated in 1933. Ordained 1933, Priest 1934. Father David W. Norton died April 3, 1985 in Salem, MA leaving two cousins, Edward Robinson of Dedham and Hope Robinson Rhodes of Woodstock, VT. I can't find Edward or Hope. So if you think about it, our last name should be Wells not Norton, but since Ashely David Wells last name was changed to Norton (legelly or not) we are now Norton. I would love to hear from any of Ashley's half siblings and trade Norton genealogy. I have been working on the Norton's for almost 9 years now and have collected a lot of information on them.
