We beleive that they are related to the other Nortons who moved from NC to GA into the same area about the same time. Cornelius Norton was listed in the 1829 Tax Digest, 1830 Census, and in the tax digest in Fayette Co., GA until about 1834. He won land in the Cherokee Land Lottery of 1838. In 1840 he was in the Campbell Co., GA census, also in the 1850. It appears that he may have moved from GA between 1854 and 1856. This is based on finding his daughter, Jane, in the 1860 census of TX with two children, unknown relationship. The eldest child was Frances Fowler, age 6, born in GA and Rebecca Folwer, age 4, born in TX. Jane apprently married a Folwer first, maybe from AL or GA. She is in the household of Joseph or James Johnson as his wife in the 1860 census of Upshur Co., TX. I have not found Conrleius Norton under any spelling after the 1850 census of Campbell Co., GA. In the 1880 census of Navarro Co., TX, Jane Johnson is listed as head of household, a widow, with her mother in the household-Sarah Norton, age 74, Widow, born in NC. I have not found Sarah in any census between 1850 and 1880. I also found in the 1860 census of Upshur Co., TX, brother Varnal. He may have died in the war. In the 1880 census of Camp Co., GA, there is a V. Norton, age 40, born in GA to parents born in NC with wife Jane. This could be Varnal, he is the right age and right characteristics. Sister Jane Norton Johnson had a son also. His name was given as Saul in the 1860 and 1880 censuses. He was born in c. 1859 in TX and married Melvina M., age 16 in the 1880 census, born in TX to a father born in MS and a mother born in AL. Also in the 1880 household is Mary J. Black, granddaughter, age 7, born in TX to a father born in GA and a mohter born in TX. This would be the daughter of Frances or Rebecca. My family stayed in GA. Andrew Jackson Norton married Jane Helms. They raised their family and then some grandchildren, in the Campbell/Douglas/Cobb Co., area of GA. I have extensive notes on their family to share. What I really dream of is finding a descendant of the Nortons who went to TX to find out more about these families. AJ and Jane had children who also moved into TX. I will welcome any info that may link my family in GA and AL to the ones who migrated into TX. Thank you Mona Herrin
