You stated that Edley Norton, Jr. and Sampson Lemuel disappeared in Kansas in 1868. Actually they didn't make it all the way to Kansas but returned to the same county in AR that they had left. Sampson married in Scott Co. AR in 1870 . I am descended from him. I believe that Edley Jr and other family members went to Texas. Edley, Sr. was my Gr. Gr. grandfather. I haven't established a connection to William of S.C. yet even though our Sampson was listed on census records as being born in S.C. I do hope it is the right one though.
