Hello, Re: VA/Northumberland/Westmoreland/Old Rappahannock/Richmond Counties primarily KY > MS I am writing to the individual who had the post shown below as well as to the NORTON, HOLBROOK(S,) KELLY, EARLE, WILCOXSON, DONOVAN, WILLIAMS and RANSDELL, MOSS, LOVELL, BURK(E,) lists pertaining to a descent from and connections to my paternal 9th great grandfather, named Patrick NORTON, (probably the immigrant,) born: Bef. 1641 in ?/England?/Virginia, who lived in Virginia, probably Old Rappahannock County, Virginia but not certain, who married a woman named Margaret ? and they were the parents of a son, Thomas NORTON, and daughter, Penelope "Nelly" NORTON, who married Matthew KELLY, Sr., born: Bef./Abt. 1640 in ?/Virginia?/England?, (parents: ??,) and they were the parents of (Captain) John KELLY, born: Abt./Aft. 1660 in Virginia, possibly Old Rappahannock County, who married Amy DONIPHAN, born: Abt./Aft. 1662 in Virginia, possibly Old Rappahannock County, (daughter of Amie/Aimee/Amy PARTRIDGE who married (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN, Sr. who were also the parents of Alexander "Alex" DONIPHAN who married Sarah SALLIS who was the daughter of Samuel SALLIS and his wife, Sarah CATLETT, (daughter of Elizabeth UNDERWOOD and (Colonel) John CATLETT, (son of John CATLETT and Sarah HAWKINS,) and Sarah CATLETT had 1st married Robert TALIAFERRO, Jr. then married 2nd husband, Samuel SALLIS and after his death married Samuel SHORT. The aforementioned Elizabeth UNDERWOOD also married TAYLER, LIGHTFOOT, SLAUGHTER and BUTLER I believe. Some information that I show mentioning this Patrick NORTON is: << William Moss' will was probated 1 July 1685; he leaves bequests to son, William, daughters Elizabeth and Frances and brother Robert. He died possessed of a goodly amount of property - leaving his son, William the "plantacon containing 880 acres," plus one other parcel of land containing 600 acres," and to daughter, Frances "400 acres of land adjoining the track of land whereon Thomas Newman now liveth," and to daughter, Elizabeth "150 acres of land which I bought of Patrick Norton" and "also to daughter, Elizabeth "200 acres of land where Thomas Newman now lives together with the Plantacon and all things belonging to it, she to enjoy the same as soon as the lease is out." There were many other bequests of personal property, some of which were quite amusing. >> and << The first Robert Lovell came to Virginia prior to Nov. 8, 1625 (Va. land patents, Nugent abstracts), and a Robert Lovell with Patrick Norton patented 1000 acres of land Dec. 2, 1663 on Rappahannock River, a renewal of a Patent dated May 26, 1660. ROBERT LOVELL, the progenitor, or at least the earliest proven, of the Westmoreland Lovells, is first mentioned in existing records Nov. 5, 1666 (Deeds, Patents, etc., p. 329) when he and Elinor, his wife, deeded 150 a land to Daniel Swillivant. He acknowledged the sale in Court but Elinor, his wife, acted through her attorney, John Dinely, "It not being convenient for her to travel." It may be the patentee of 1663 is the same Robert Lovell here mentioned. On July 7, 1670 William Pierce assigned a patent of 500 a on the Potomac River to Robert Lovell, who repatented this land on Nov. 25, 1670 evidently to insure a clearer title (Va. Land Patents). This patent adjoined John Washington on the North and Andrew Monroe to the South, as well as his original holdings. He died ante April 24, 1700, date his Will probated by "his son" Robert Lovell, Jr. the Executor (Orders p. 70). Will Book for that year is among missing documents.' [Historic Southern Families, Vol. 1, p. 221] Robert LOVELL,d. before 24 Apr 1700 Westmoreland County, Virginia m. Elinor _____ >> and << Sparacio's "Deed Abstracts of Old Rappahannock Co., VA 1670-72" shows a Pricket Burke received a "graunt" of 408 acres and 8 primes in Aug. 1669 and he sold it in Feb. 1670 to Patrick Norton. the proximity of the land to John Burk's land suggests a possible family relationship and a similar situation exists with a David Burk (will 1686/87) and a Richard Burk in 1687--all being alive after Mary's marriage to Tuggle, but who may be brothers or sons of John Burk of Lancaster Co. in 1653. Other Burks, Thomas (1698) and John (1706) were in Richmond Co. >> In the following post I noticed that your NORTON family is connected to HOLBROOK(S) lineage which my NORTON descendant, Bailey JENNINGS, my paternal 3rd great grandfather, born: Abt. 1789 in VA, prob. in Richmond County, is descended from as his father was John JENNINGS, Sr., (RS,) born: Abt. 1748 in Richmond County, VA, who married Rachel JORDAN, and John was the son of Sarah MOORE and Edward Salley JENNINGS, Sr., born: 1720 in Richmond County, Virginia, son of William JENNINGS, Jr., born: Abt. 1695 in Richmond County, VA, died: 1733 in Richmond Co., VA, and his wife, Ann KELLY, born: Abt. 1696 in Richmond Co., VA, who was the daughter of the aforementioned Amy DONIPHAN, (her 2nd husband was Edward RANSDELL,) and Amy's 1st husband, (Captain) John KELLY. The aforementioned William JENNINGS, Jr. was the son of Mary WILLOUGHBY, born: Abt. 1670, and husband, William JENNINGS, Sr., born: Abt. 1668 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia, son of Margaret PAYNE, (daughter of Margaret ?/ROBINSON? and John PAYNE, immigrant, born: Abt. 1615 in Yorkshire, England, died: 1689 in Maryland when murdered during the Maryland Protestant Revolution, buried at "Red House," Cedar Hill, Westmoreland County, VA,) and 1st husband, John JENNINGS, Sr., immigrant, born: Abt. 1633/poss. May 22, 1640 in St. Martin's Parish, Birmingham, Worcester Co., England. Mrs. Margaret PAYNE JENNINGS later married 2nd husband, Christopher EDRINGTON, Sr.. William JENNINGS, Jr. had a brother named Augustine JENNINGS, born: 1708 in Richmond Co., VA, who married Hannah WILLIAMS and Augustine JENNINGS, after the death of both his brother, William, and William's wife, Ann KELLY, became the guardian of their sons, Edward Salley JENNINGS, Sr. and Calathan JENNINGS, while their brothers William JENNINGS, III and John JENNINGS, Sr.'s guardian was Matthew (2) KELLY and their sister Martha JENNINGS' guardian was Alexander Doniphan KELLY. Alexander Doniphan KELLY and Matthew (2) KELLY were the brothers of Ann KELLY/Mrs. William JENNINGS, Jr. and sons of Amy DONIPHAN and (Captain) John KELLY, (as mentioned above.) The aforementioned Bailey JENNINGS married 1st wife, Kitty EARLE, (my paternal 3rd great grandmother,) born: Abt. 1795 in VA, daughter of Tabitha WILLIAMS, born: 1766 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, VA, (daughter of Catherine "Caty" ? and George WILLIAMS, (2nd son of his name,) born: 1734 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, VA, (son of Ann WILLIAMS, (descends from BILLINGTON - WILLIAMS lineage that immigrated in the early 1600s from England to New England then her branch soon after into Virginia,) and Ann's husband, Roger WILLIAMS, (descends from Alice PEMBERTON and James WILLIAMS through their son, Sydrach WILLIAMS, who immigrated from England to New England and then soon after into Virginia in the early 1600s.) And Tabitha WILLIAMS' husband and the father of Kitty EARLE was Samuel EARLE, IV, (RS/Sgt.,) (2nd son of his name,) born: January 20, 1760 at "Town Run" Plantation, Fauquier County, Virginia, died: 1845 in Mobile, Alabama, son of (Major) Samuel EARLE, III, born: Abt. 1692 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, (whose 1st wife was Anna SORRELL,) and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth HOLBROOK, aka HOLDBROOK, born: Abt. 1733/1728 in Prince William County, Virginia, who was the daughter of Randolph "Randall/Randol" HOLBROOK, Jr. and his 2nd wife, Mrs. Jannet/Jeannette PATTISON - CONYERS, (2nd wife and widow of 1st husband, Henry CONYERS,) and Randolph "Randall/Randol" HOLBROOK, Jr.'s 1st wife was Ann STANWAY. Randolph "Randall/Randol" HOLBROOK, Jr. was the son of Randolph "Ralph/Rafe" HOLBROOK, Sr. and his 2nd wife who was Mary WILCOXSON/Mrs. Mary ? WILLCOCKSEN, (his 1st wife was Elizabeth HODGKISSON.) Bailey JENNINGS and Kitty EARLE married in December 1811 in Christian County, Kentucky, (later became Caldwell County,) and she is believed to have had sisters named: Virginia Elizabeth? EARLE, Sarah A. EARLE, Elvinia Ewing EARLE, Mary Ann EARLE, and Elizabeth EARLE. There were marriages possibly in the surnames of McWATERS/WATERS and ATCHISON/ATCHESON as well as Virginia Elizabeth? EARLE married John JENNINGS, Jr. who was the brother of Bailey JENNINGS. Some information that I have suggests that Samuel EARLE, (RS/Sgt.) and wife, Tabitha WILLIAMS, in addition to the Moses McWATERS/WATERS, (who may have married a daughter of theirs named Elizabeth EARLE,) were involved in settling the Christian County, Kentucky area with Daniel BOONE and his family. And Daniel BOONE's sister, Sarah BOONE, (Sarah Cassandra? BOONE,) born: June 07, 1724 in Chalfone/Chalfont, New Britain Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, died: 1815 in Estill, Madison County, Kentucky, married a man named John WILCOXSON, aka WILLCOCKSEN, born: September 06, 1720 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, died: February 03, 1782 in Bryan Station, Fayette County, Kentucky who may be related in some way to the aforementioned Mary WILCOXSON, possibly Mrs. Mary ? WILLCOCKSEN, who married as the 2nd wife of Randolph "Ralph/Rafe" HOLBROOK. The HOLBROOK and EARLE lines also had branches in New England as well as did the ALLERTON group of the aforementioned Mattilda ALLERTON whom appears to be related in some way to Isaac ALLERTON, Jr., son of Isaac ALLERTON, Sr. and his 2nd wife, Fear BREWSTER, daughter of William BREWSTER whose descendants also married into the MERRICK family that immigrated in 1636 to New England from England after immigrating from Wales and was originally MEURIG/MEURIC Anglicized into MEYRICK then MERRICK and MYRICK by the time of arriving in America with the MYRICK/MIRICK spellings used primarily in the South and that my MYRICK lineage descends from through Owen MYRICK involved with BACON'S rebellion. There are also addition connections between family groups in New England and Virginia that were the PRINCE/PRENCE, BERRY, BACON and other connecting groups. Bailey JENNINGS' 2nd wife was Mrs. Sarah "Sally" LEA LEE, (maiden name LEA and widow of 1st husband, William LEE, (son of Needham LEE, Sr. of Simpson County, MS,) and Bailey JENNINGS was the Justice of the Peace in Covington County, MS before moving to Simpson County, MS. The aforementioned (Major) Samuel EARLE, III and his 1st wife, Anna SORRELL, were the parents of an earlier son who was named Samuel EARLE, IV who was born in abt. 1727 and died in abt. 1752 and married a Miss ? PERKINS. In addition (Major) Samuel EARLE also had a grandson named Samuel EARLE who was born in 1760, the same year as the birth of his 2nd son named Samuel EARLE, IV, (RS/Sgt.,) shown above as born on January 22, 1760 in addition to numerous other cousins in branches of the descendants of the many Samuel ancestors. (Major) Samuel EARLE, III was the son of Phillis BENNETT and Samuel EARLE, II, son of Bridget HALE(S) and Samuel EARLE, I, son of Mary SYMONS and (Sir) John EARLE, Sr., immigrants respecitvely in 1652 and 1649 into St. Mary's County, Maryland and soon after into Northumberland County, Virginia where (Sir) John EARLE settled Yeocomico Plantation, (after acquiring it from the Indians,) along with Thomas HALE(S)/HAILES/HAILLES/HAYLES who married Thomasina DOWCETT and are believed to be the parents of Bridget HALE(S) who married Samuel EARLE, I who, after Bridget's death, married a woman named Mattilda ALLERTON who later married 2nd husband, William RUST, (related to the PAYNE and JENNINGS families above and my maternal LAMKIN - COX - DERMOURVILLE families,) and then her 3rd husband, John BENNETT, (cousin of (Gov.) Richard BENNETT of Isle of Wight Co., VA,) who may have previously been married to a Mary BERRY but not sure about that. (Major) Samuel EARLE, III was the 1st Member of the House of Burgesses elected from Frederick County, VA and his grandfather, Samuel EARLE, I owned land adjoining that of Augustine WASHINGTON, (father of (Pres.) George WASHINGTON and son of Mildred WARNER and Lawrence WASHINGTON,) and Samuel EARLE, I was the land grant partner of (Major) John STITH. Later my JENNINGS ancestor, Spencer B. PARKER, born: 1859 in MS, grandson of the aforementioned Samuel EARLE, IV, (RS/Sgt.,) married Rachael Moranda "Randy" LEWIS, (aka COLEMAN, aka BRIGHT from marriage to Wesley BRIGHT,) born: Abt. 1851 in Jones County, MS, daughter of Harriett ELLZEY and John LEWIS, born: Abt. 1820 in Jones Co., MS, (son of Nancy COPELAND, (mother: Rachael TUCKER and father, Ripley COPELAND, Sr., (RS,)) and Howell LEWIS, born: Bet. 1782-1788 in Granville Co., NC, (believed possibly to have been the son of another Howell LEWIS, (son of Frances LEWIS and husband, Robert (2) LEWIS, Jr., both descendants of John "Councillor" LEWIS and Elizabeth WARNER, (sister of the aforementioned Mildred WARNER, (daughters of Augustine WARNER, II, (Speaker of the House of Burgesses,) and wife, Mildred READE.) Looking forward to hearing anything from anyone who might have any information about the Patrick NORTON above and his wife, Margaret ?, and their daughter, Penelope "Nelly" NORTON, who married Matthew KELLY, and anything else connecting.
