    3. Hello cousin! I am also descended from William J. Norton, born 1819, married to Nancy Lovada Ponder in Yancey Co. NC. (Mars Hill area). William J. had brothers James Norton, married to Matilda, "Tilday"; Josiah Norton, murdered during the civil war, Josiah's widow Jane, called Jennie, moved with her children to Arkansas, we have contact with some of their descendants; and Jesse Norton, died at Camp Douglas POW camp in Chicago during the civil war. william J. Norton had sisters Nancy Norton, married to a Franklin; Jane Norton who married James Jarvis; Ann Norton who married W.R. Boon; and Mary Luarty Norton who married a Watts, but was later married to Mark Calloway. William J. Norton's first child was Allison Woodville Norton. He died along with his uncle, Jesse Norton, at Camp Douglas POW camp in Chicago and is buried there at the "Confederate Mound". The 6,000 who died there were buried in concentric rings, 9 deep around the obelisk-like monument, there are no individual markers but the names are written on brass plaques on the base of the monument. William J. Norton's other children include; John M. Norton who died about 1884 Druscilla Jane Norton, "Aunt Jane" who married Michael Teague William Mitchell Norton, married #1 Elizabeth Catherine Hibbard, married #2 Martha Susan Renner Robert Patterson Norton, "Uncle Bob", married Molly Elizabeth Prewitt James E. Norton, "Uncle Jeemes" is the way dad pronounced his name. I was surprised to learn that his name was spelled "James". He is your ancestor. Married to Dulla Jane Ray, James is buried at ST. Maries Idaho, but you know all that already. :) James' first child, Emma G. Norton, married Sept 17 1891 to Gaither D. Edwards in Marshall NC. She is the only one of William J. Norton's grandchildren who stayed behind in NC. william J. and all the other children went to the Rockcastle River in Kentucky in 1873, James stayed in NC till 1890 and Emma was married by that time. Are you in contact with James' descendants in Galena Missouri, Idaho or North Carolina? Nancy Lovada Norton, died 1877, never married, but had one child, there's a tale there.... Andrew Jackson Norton, "Uncle Jack", married Mahalia Elizabeth Cooper, both daughters died in infancy, the only son, Cossie Dean Norton, had only one child, Shelby Cooper Norton, who died on the beach at Normandy. Shelby had one son, Jessie Dean Norton. Joseph Morgan Norton, "Uncle Joe", married Melvina Bustle. Jesse Lasala Norton, my great-grandfather, married Tillo Bustle. Many descendants. One of his sons was Roy Norton, my grandfather. His oldest son was my dad, Roy Harold Norton, who went by his middle name, "Harold". Allison Woodville Norton, "Uncle Doc", born 1865, the youngest. You will notice that he has the same name as his oldest brother, who had died just a couple of years before. There was also a sister, Mary, who died as a child during the time of the civil war. We found this mentioned in an old letter written during that time. Most of this comes out of the book "Kentucky Ponders", some is from my memory (I wanted to write back without the delay of digging out my notes) Now the question of William J. Norton's ancestry: William J. Norton's father was Jesse Norton. I have seen this in old papers with my own eyes. Dad and I came up with a date of birth around 1795 because his oldest known child was born in 1819. Jesse Norton was married to Mary "Polly" Ramsey. I found in research that "Polly" was frequently a nickname in those times for women named Mary, so Polly was a nickname, not a middle name. You have Jesse Norton as a child of David Norton, who descends from Amos Norton. I have also seen this reported. The origination of this theory, as far as I could tell, is that there was a list of David's children that came down from the old times. One of the current generation noted that Jesse also lived in the Yancey Co/ Marshall/Mars Hill area of North Carolina. So it was reckoned that Jesse must have also been one of David's children. And Jesse's name was appended to the end of the list. I note that your list, just as the list I saw, has Jesse's name last. The other names are given in order of birth. So it is odd that the first born would be given last, unless the name was added later, as I believe it was. If you know of any evidence that Jesse is related to David Norton I would be pleased to see it. Orla, "Orly", one of (Joseph Morgan Norton) Uncle Joe's daughters reports that it came to her from Uncle Joe that Jesse's dad was a William Norton whose wife had maiden name Sams. William must have been born before 1775, maybe long before. We have no idea whether Jesse was the oldest or youngest child. I had a DNA test done to help me find possible relatives. There are so many Norton lines, even in a single state like Kentucky, or in North Carolina, that DNA testing is one way to narrow my search to those with DNA matching mine. The Barry Norton, to whom I am sending a copy of this message, matches my DNA on 11 of 12 markers, which indicates that we are probably related. Having the same last name and having ancestors in the same area means that the relation may be from that area at that time. He traces his ancestry back to William Norton, born 1740 in VA, who was brother to Mercer "Messer", Norton born 1750 in VA. These descend from Edward Norton of County Armagh, Ulster Province, Northern Ireland. I think Barry is also trying to verify his information about descent from Edward Norton with his DNA search. Maybe we'll all get lucky and contact some long lost relatives who can provide the link to the more distant past. If we can find how we're linked to Barry, we'll be a lot closer to the answers.
