I am seeking people who are descendants of, or have knowledge of, either of the two Ambrose NORTONs who appeared in the subject location from 1790-1800. I working on a theory that I hope you can help me to either prove or disprove. Between 1790 and 1800 there were two Ambrose Nortons in the Greenville/Norton Hill area. I believe one was the brother of Maj. Elon, Asher, Issac, Sally (sic, Lucy) & Ruth Norton. who were the children of Daniel & Sarah (Stone) Norton of Guilford, CT and Greenville/Norton Hill. Daniel Norton appears in the 1790 Federal Census of Freehold (Greenville), Greene Co., NY with (1, - , 1, -, -) on p. 26. Sarah, wife of Daniel Norton was received by vote into Christ Church (later became Presby. Ch.) of Greenville on Wednesday 19th 1790 [Deduction this is the same Daniel & Sarah (Stone) Norton who were the parents of the children mentioned in the abstract of his will probated February 1, 1814, and their children were old enough to have their own families:] Only one Ambrose Norton appears (only with his wife) in the 1790 Federal Census of Freehold Twp., Albany (later Greene) Co., NY. [He was the only Ambrose Norton indexed anywhere in the 1790 Federal Census!] Ambross (sic, Ambrose) was enumerated next to Elon Norton with (1, 1, 4, -, -) who was next to Asher Norton with (2, -, 1, -, -) who was near Thomas Knowles John Cowles, and Joshua Boardman with (3, 2, 4, -, -). My Timothy, Ephraim, PAGEs were close, and Isaac Norton with (1, 1, 2, -, -) adjacent to my Ephraim Page. [ p. 27]. [Deduction: Ambrose, Elan (sic, Elon), Asher, and Isaac Norton were related, perhaps brothers. Judging by the lack of children at that time, Ambrose was probably the younger of the four.] In the 1800 Federal Census there were two Ambrose NORTONs enumerated: Ambrose Norton appears with his family in the 1800 Federal Census of Freehold Twp., Greene Co., NY with (1 male under 10; 1 male 16-25, himself 26-45; 4 females under 10; 1@10-15; and wife 26-45). He was next to Dan Norton (his father?) with (1 male 45+; 1 female 10-16, and wife 45+) Rachael Page (widow of Luther Page), John Stone, Harvey (?) Stone, Isaac Norton ((3,1,1,1, -, / 1, -, 1, -, -) [p. 30] Another Ambrose Norton appears in the same 1800 census on the previous page with (2, -, 1, 1, -/2, 2, -, 1, -) next to Joel Norton (1@26-45 plus females: 3@<10, 1@26-45)and another Isaac Norton with (1@26-45 plus 1 female @<10, 1@26-45) [p. 29]. Another Ephraim Page appears next to Isaac Norton. I know who he was and he was not related according to DNA evidence. [p. 29] [A Joel Norton, the son of John and Hannah (Bishop) Norton was b. in Durham, CT on Apr. 24, 1771, but there was no contemporary Isaac Norton b. there according to Durham Vital Records. Another Ambrose Norton appears on the 1806, 1807, 1808 Tax Lists of Muskingum Co., OH, but he also appeared there in the 1810 Federal Census.] Only one Ambrose Norton appears with his family in the 1810 Federal Census of Freehold Twp., Greene Co., NY with (10101-02101) [p. 156] Another Ambrose Norton appears in the 1810 Federal Census of Litchfield, Litchfield, CT [p. 5] [Deduction: One Ambrose Norton either died or relocated by 1810] Daniel Norton appears in the 1810 Federal Census of Freehold (Greenville), Greene Co., NY with (01001-01101) [p. 157]. DANIEL NORTON of Freehold Will Probated February 1, 1814 Heirs: Wife, Sarah; sons: Elon, Isaac and Asher; daughters: Lucy Morse and Sarah Stokes. Executor: Elon Norton. Witnesses: (Rev. ) Beriah Hotchkin, Ambrose Norton and Daniel M. Bristol. [It would appear that IF Ambrose Norton was a son of Daniel Norton, he would be listed unless he predeceased his father, or was estranged; and that the witness Ambrose Norton, who was not listed as a son, was the one enumerated a few years earlier in the 1810 Federal Census. Can anyone shed any light on any Ambrose Norton? George W. Page
