    1. [NORTON] Norton's in (Lawrence & ? Counties) AL
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Thrasher, Norton, Roberson, Pickens, McCrary, etc. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Qi3.2ACIB/1719 Message Board Post: I am searching for any information on the family of my great-grandmother Dora Isabella NORTON who was born 5/3/1869 in AL and married to George Lewis THRASHER on 3/13/1887 in Lawrence County, AL. Their marriage license gives their names as G.L. THRASHER and Miss M.E. NORTON. They had five children: George Thomas, Annie Genaver, William Merty, James Flur, and Newton Columbus (my grandfather). Dora died on 5/10/1939 and Lewis died 10/10/1945. They died and are buried in Morgan County, AL. In the 1920 Morgan County, AL census Dora's father's name is given as William NORTON (a widower, aged 72,living with Dora). Dora's death certificate gives her mother's name as Adline KING but gives her father's as J. T. NORTON. I found a Dora I. NORTON, aged 10 in the 1880 census, living with her parents John T. and Matilda E. NORTON in Winston County, AL with four younger siblings: Charles K. (8), Martha (6), Alsey (4), and Hulda (2). I also have a copy of a land transfer document (dated 7/20/1893) with J.T. and Matilda A. NORTON giving land to the trustees of a church at Liberty Grove (in Lawrence County). One of those trustees was G.W. THRASHER who was the founder and first preacher of that church as well as the father of my George Lewis THRASHER. This document was attested to by T.O. THRASHER (another of G.W's sons) and J. M. NORTON. According to land records this is part of the property of John T. NORTON. I am convinced that John T. and Matilda are Dora's parents, but haven't been able to prove that conclusively in part due to the differences in names found in variouis records. I have been unable to find any other records as yet. I have been told by another THRASHER researcher that the Norton's migrated from Randolph County, AL along with the Thrasher's. Any help, suggestions, or possible leads will be appreciated greatly.
