I've been away from working the Norton line too long (or maybe getting too old). Of course the William and Mary Norton you seek was not William Alexander and Mary Atwood. I don't know if anyone knows who the couple on the 1776's census was. Valerie

I am not sure if we have a connection but our ggg grandmother was Rebecca Norton, daughter of Elias, born in 1806. There is a little confusion as to whether she was born in SC or GA. They did move to GA in the early 1800's. Elias Norton was born in 1780 in SC. His wife, Elizabeth was also born in SC. I will look in my file to see what the census says about her place of birth and what else I have for them. The dates don't seem to work now that I look thru your e mail. Do you know the name of Frances' mother? Rose

Surnames: NORTON, MARTIN Classification: Bible Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Qi3.2ACIB/1650 Message Board Post: NORTON Bible Records This paper is labelled "Norton's Memoranda of Children's ages" on the outside. Prior to official birth and marriage certificates, people used to use Bible records or handwritten transcripts as proof of these events. This paper is folded wallet-size, and was probably carried for that purpose. Location of the original Bible is unknown, but there are some indications that these Norton families resided in TN and Lawrence County, AL. The present tense of the wording ("List of Names and ages of Edward Norton's Children") and the handwriting conventions leads me to date this piece in the mid-1840s. There are two sets of handwritings, the earlier dates may have been written much earlier. What I have is that Dorr Norton was born in New York, but I have not confirmed that. If the info I have is correct, the Dow's and the Norton's went to Wisconsin about the same time in 1856 and about 1864 in Winconsin Luria Dow married Dorr Norton. The Dow's and the Norton's moved to an area around Decorah Iowa in 1867. You can find them in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census reports. When Luria Dow's mother passed away in 1908 I have been told they moved to South Dakota, but I haven't been able to find them on any census reports. I know the Norton's had a son named Alvin Norton and I'm guessing he moved with them to South Dakota. I also have a report that says the Norton's are buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Cresco, Iowa.
