I saw this on the "History of Piracy of the Ocean State" site (Rhode Island) and thought it interesting. http://www.osfn.org/~au271 All those Norton boys among other New Englanders must have done a little piracy, and slave running, although probably wouldn't admit to it. "The death of Brodish didn't end the era of piracy in Rhode Island. The eighteenth century started out with a bumper crop of rhode Island pirates, in 1702, William Clark the maritime historian reveals,"every man in Newport is either a pirate or privateerman." In 1716 Edward Teach better known as Blackbeard paid a long visit to Providence. Three years later, Captain Ben Norton sailed from Providence to the West Indies John Menzies then New England's Royal Secretary of the Admiralty writes "Norton's vessel by observation is more suited for piracy than trade." Norton joined notorious pirate chief Thomas"Black Bart"Roberts in the west Indies, and together they raided shipping. The owner of Norton's ship later became Deputy Governor of Rhode Island, his name was Joseph Whipple, both Whipple and Norton writes Admiral Mennzies,"carried off rich cargo, with other traders of Newport, in sloops to Providence...yet when I went to the Governor of Rhode Island, he would not give up the go! ods."the passage of time did not change the way business was done in Rhode Island. Rhode Island remained a freeport for freebooters until 1723, when at Gravelly Point near Newport 26 men were hanged for piracy. This ended the days of piracy in Rhode Island. " Curious Joan

Eunice Norton was born around 1865 in WI.IL area. She was married to Eli Cobb in 1881 in Wilmot WI & had Alma Cobb in 1883 (my G-Grandmother). She then divorces Eli in 1889 in Waukegan, Lake Co IL. Then she has a male child with Ebenezer Widger OTIS 5/11/1892 in Kenosha Co WI. Ebenezer is the son of Octavia Alvira & Ebenezer Hayden Otis. I have info on his family all from McHenry Co, IL. Ebenezer marries a Catherine Kneaves in Kansas City Mo (where his mother Octavia lives) in Jun 1896 and moves to CA. What I'm looking for: 1. Can anyone help me find who this unnamed Otis boy is? My great grandmother said right before she died that a man came to see her claiming to be her half brother so we think he may have family - but couldn't remember anything else. 2. What happened to Eunice between 1892 & 1896? This is the last we see of her, family rumor had it that she dies of TB during this time but I can't find a death record of her in WI or IL. We now think she may have gone to Kansas City Mo with Ebenezer, being a railroad man and his mother living there. Where would I find death records there? or cemetery records? Listing of OldTB center's there? PLEASE ANY HELP or suggestions welcome!
Hello, I have read your post regarding Lew and Emma Norton and found it to be so very interesting because there are many similarities in names and places for my own Norton family that I am researching but, yet, some discrepancies as you will see. Let me tell you about my Norton family: My grandfather was Charles Henry Norton b, 1865 in Rowley, Buchanan County, Iowa. His father was Joseph L. Norton b. 1830 (?) in New York. His mother was Sarah Catherine Kessler who was born in Ohio ( the Cleveland area, I believe). They had seven children: Ruth (Ella) b. 1857, Frederick and Ida (twins b. 1859, LEW b. about 1863 and who married an EMMA, my grandfather, Charles Henry b. 1865, Lillian M who was born about 1868 and Fannie born 1869. This family was shown on the Buchanan County Census for 1860 and 1870 and then I lose them although information from the Buchanan County Iowa Historical Society says that Joseph Norton moved to Kansas (I know not where). So you see , the coincidences of names, Joseph, Lew and Emma, and places Ohio, Iowa and Kansas are most interesting. My grandfather, Charles Henry Norton , eventually settled in Southern California and as I child I remember the names of Uncle Lew and Aunt Emma but that has been over 60 years ago and I do not remember if they lived in that area at that time or not. If you need further info, please e-mail me. Beverly White User104535@aol.com
