    1. [NORTON] Re: NORTON-D Digest V02 #52
    2. I don't have George being the offspring of Thomas and Grace. Don't know if I mistyped or what. Sorry, and glad you questioned me. Blind acceptance is how these gross errors find their way into the genealogical record. I was very, very delinquent when I first started doing genealogy and didn't document my sources with anything approaching scholarship. However, in the case of early George(s) information, I believe it came from Lewis Mills Norton's 1859 manuscript (which I had in microfilm and just gave away a year or so ago) and, later, the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records (ditto). On a "related" topic, I have been trying unsuccesfully to force feed the following two gents into the George of Salem genealogy: Timothy Norton, b. 1715, prob. in Brookhaven. Lived in Middle Island, Married Sybil (John) Bryan, Mar. 18, 1739, blah, blah, blah Nathaniel Norton, b. in Brookhaven. Originally thought these brothers were sons of Johnathan, Nathaniel, George of Salem. Am not so sure now. Any thoughts? Bob Norton

    2. Hi Dex, Thanks for responding so quickly. As you can see, I daughtered-out much earlier than you did, though we do follow the same line for 3 generations here in the US. As for what I have, I'm forwarding you a copy of my notes on our immigrant ancestor GEORGE, b ca 1605. I'd be happy to send more if you'd like. What do you have on THOMAS & WILLIAM born England and their spouses, GRACE WELLS and DENISE CHOLMELY? I don't have much of anything, though I've been told that this NORTON line dates quite far back. In the 25 December 1637 Salem division of marsh received three-quarters of an acre, with a household of five [STR 1:102]. In response to a petition, the General Court on 13 May 1640 granted to a "company" of men, including "Geo: Norton," "Jeffryes Creek, and land to erect a village there" [MBCR 1:289]. She married (2) Ipswich 27 February 1659[/60] PHILIP FOWLER (with whom she defended her administration of George's estate, November Term 1665 [EQC 3:285]). (Seversmith dismisses the undocumented claim that she was Mary Machias; he also argues convincingly that the claim that Mary was sister of Bethia Cartwright of Salem derives from a misreading of the will of Bethia [TAG 15:194-95].) ELIZABETH, b. about 1654; prob. m. Ipswich 13 November 1676 Josiah Bridges. (She did not marry John Wainwright [TAG 30:18; NEHGR 13:230].) Comments: In their 17 April 1629 letter to John Endicott, in a section informing him of various settlers being sent over that year, the Massachusetts Bay Company included "one Norton, a carpenter, whom we pray you respect as he shall deserve" [MBCR 1:396]. This has been assumed, with good reason, to be George Norton, since George was later referred to as a carpenter. George Norton was presented at Salem Court for "lying and subborning witnesses to scandalize the church of Wenham, to pay 20s. for two lies and seven witnesses three days, and to confess before the assembly met at Wenham in the meeting house, as follows: `I do confess and acknowledge that I have sinfully endeavored to justify myself and my turbulent and factious agitations against the just and orderly proceedings of the church against me for my sin in that I have incessantly labored out of the pride of my heart to gather up witnesses of all sorts to testify against the dealing of the church with me seeking thereby to lay a scandal upon the church which cannot but greatly tend to the dishonor of God and the reproach of religion.' Refusing to make this confession, to sit one hour in the stocks" [EQC 1:156]. (The misbehavior of George Norton was the principal matter of church business at Wenham throughout 1648 and 1649 [Fiske Notebook 57-88].) At November Term 1665, Mary Norton's new husband, Philip Fowler, in her right as administratrix of George Norton's estate, successfully sued Roger Preston for an incompleted lease on John Endicott's farm called "Groton." Norton had leased it for ten years, beginning 1 March 1655/6 for 118 per year, and was to build a strong and sufficient house, "in every way like that of Mr. Tredwell at Ipswich, except Norton was to make catted chimneys instead of brick, and was to leave the house tenantable at the end of the term ... in consideration for which he was to have one year of the rent of the farm free" [EQC 3:286]. Roger Preston had agreed to take over the lease starting 14 March 1659/60, but was reluctant after the death of Norton in 1659. Savage stated that between his residences at Gloucester and Wenham, George Norton resided briefly at Ipswich, but this was his son of the same name [TAG 15:196]. With regard to the baptism of daughter Mary in Gloucester in 1643, Savage made the peculiar statement "unless this were mistake, as to me seems probable for Henry" [Savage 3:291]. Since the list of children of George Norton does include a daughter Mary of the right age, but no Henry of any age, it is hard to understand what Savage intended here. In his treatment of George Norton, Herbert F. Seversmith provided baptismal dates for the last two daughters from the Salem church [TAG 15:196]. The dates are correct, but the first of them is for a son John rather than daughter Abigail. These two baptisms, in 1651 for John and 1653 for Elizabeth, are for children of "Mr. Norton," who at this time in Salem would be Francis Norton. Bibiliographic Note: In 1939 Herbert F. Seversmith compiled a sketch of the life and family of George Norton, along with an examination of Norton's possible English ancestry; Seversmith thought the derivation from the Nortons of Sharpenhoe, Bedfordshire, was unlikely [TAG 15:193-207]. Authority - (?) - The following text was sent to me from Scott McArthur, PC, 112 N. Atwater Street, Monmouth, Oregon 97361. January 15, 1995. George Norton sailed from Isle of Wight about May 11, 1629, previous port Gravesend, England, aboard the ship Talbot, of London, Thomas Beecher, Master, and arrived at Salem, Mass., July 29. He was a member of the party of Rev. Francis Higgingson, of Leicester, England, consisting of about 100 planters and servants. The Talbot was one of five ships. In April, 1629, George was a resident of Salem, a carpenter. He was a Freeman, Massachusetts Bay Colony on May 14, 1634. In 1634, he was contracted to build the meeting house at Salem for 100 pounds. He served on juries, 1638-1640. In 1640 he was one of a company of men authorized by the General Court to erect a village in Jeffries Creek, now Manchaster. In 1642 he was the owner of a farm at Little Good Harbor. In 1644-48 in Wenham. February 1648, George Norton in the Quarterly Court of Essex County sentenced to pay 20 shillings and sit one hour in the stocks (having refused to make confession) for "lying and subborning witnesses to scandalize the church at Wenham." In 1656 he leased a farm called Groton from Lucia Downing for 10 years from March 1, 1656, at rent of 18 pounds per year payable in Indian corn, wheat, barley, port, butter, cheese, and cattle. he was to build a house, the chimney of brick, and therefore to have one year's rent free. He was Deputy of Massachusetts General Court 1642-43-44. Sergeant and Drill Master in 1644. They are: GEORGE NORTON SR, b 1609 England, d. 1659 Salem, MA & NICHOLAS NORTON, JR, b. 1610 England, d. aft April 17, 1690, Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA. I would very much enjoy the opportunity to learn about either of the above's ancestry. I would also enjoy sharing the information I have gathered regarding these two families. Looking forward to hearing from you. Betty

    2. George W. Page
    3. Thank you Orin. I have no problem being told when someone else is wrong, or that I have it wrong because of them! I note that the NEH&G Register as early as April 1897 had a query from Elliot Stone of Riverside, NY City about the NORTONs of Guilford, CT. [Vol. 51, p. 221]. In it is a statement that Thomas Norton's wife was named Grace WELLS and that they were m. in Shelton parish (Bedfordshire) on May 5, 1631, and that Grace was the daughter of Thomas WELLS and was baptized Feb. 15, 1632 in the adjoining parish of Deane. Elliot Stone was then seeking proof that the wife of Thomas NORTON who was named Grace, was indeed a WELLS! As far as I can tell he never got his proof. The Descendants of Thomas NORTON are compiled in the NEH&G Register in 1900 on pp. 269-276 by Hon. R.D. Smith and communicated by Dr. Bernard G. Steiner. They cite the previous query and compound the problem with more info, with Mr. Smith's statement," No explanation of his tangle can as yet be given." It would seem that in all of these years someone interested in the WELLS and/or NORTON family history would have devoted time and effort to resolve the issue of who, when, and where the Thomas NORTON who immigrant to Guilford, Conn. with Rev. Mr. Whitfield in 1639 married. Is the Evesham you refer to the one in Northants and Hunts in the extremity of Beds? If so, it is famous as the site of the Battle of Evesham in 1265 during the Baron's War when King Henry III finally beat Simon de Montford! Alas poor Simon, he was killed fighting on foot after his horse was killed under him. His body was mutilated with ritualistic savagery as there were no fair military commissions or tribunals to worry about then! 3. Hello Mark: I forgot to include my notes about my Ephraim Page, b. 21 July 1730 the son of Deacon Daniel and Hannah (Johnson) Page of North Branford: L.D.S. # 7450354-O and 7128715-7 records birth as well as Branford VR (Vol. 3, p. 71). He was a Lieutenant in the militia prior to Revolutionary War. On town committee selected on 17 November 1775 to "Secure proper ammunition for defense and conserve same." Branford Rev. Recd. on p. 3. Married Martha Norton who was mother of his children. He was NOT the Ephraim Page who married Sally Judd on 28 October 1784 at Branford (That Ephraim Page was b. 10 July 1760, the son of Amos and Rebecca (Burgess) Page).. From the Conn. Historical Collections, Vol. VIII. Conn. Line 1777-81, p. 65: "Short Term Levies 1779- Return of the Eight M Men that belonged to the 4th Conn. Regt. commanded by John Durkee, Col. Ephraim Page of Branford, July 20, 1779 - Jan. 15, 1780 term of service 6 months. Discharged 15 January 1780." Ephraim Page sold his three parcels of land in North Branford in 1784: 8-1/2 acres to Capt. Reuben Rose of Branford on 6 May 1784 (v. 11:32); 43 acres to Justus Rose of Branford on 12 August 1784 (v. 11:44); 10 acres on Toket Hill to Joseph Bunnell of Branford on 13 August 1784 (v. 18:196) Recorded on 27 February 1819. Ephraim appeared on the Tax List of the Old Town of Coxsackie in then the county of Albany, New York, on 12 June 1787. Also appearing near his name were the names of Eli Norton, Ambrose Norton and John Baker, Jr.. Ephraim's name does NOT appear on the 1790 Census of Connecticut. On March 18, 1792 he and his sons, Eli, Luther, and Timothy Page, together with: Ambrose, Asher, Giles, and Isaac Norton (of Guilford); William Barker (Jr. of Branford); Israel Baldwin (the father of Dinah Baldwin who m. Ephraim's brother, Daniel, in N. Branford); and others signed a petition to the legislature protesting the validity of the Prevost and Seaton patents near Greenville, Greene Co., New York. [Raymond Beecher, "Out To Greenville and Beyond - Historical Sketches of Greene Co." (Cornwallville, N.Y.: Hope Farm Press, 1977), p. 102.] Ephraim and his sons, Ephraim, Jr. and Timothy, appear on the 1800 census of N.Y. (Son Eli had already gone to Oneida Co., N.Y.). Ephraim d. intestate and his Probate Records are found in the Greene Co. Court House. On 30 April 1803 Timothy Page was appointed the executor of Ephraim's estate. His sons-in-law, Isaac Norton and Henry Johnson, also signed the document. Therefore Ephraim died before the end of April 1803 and is probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Locust Cemetery, at the intersection of highway 81 and Maple Ave. between West Greenville and Norton Hill. My search for his tombstone was unsuccessful and letters to the local mortician and town historian have remained unanswered.

    3. Hello Mark: I am the source of the info about the marriage of Martha NORTON to Ephraim PAGE, which I will discuss after this introduction. My line of Page descent is from George Page of Branford, Conn. (immigrated from Shorne, Kent, Eng. c. 1662) who I have researched for many years now having first corresponded with Edith Moyer Page (1977 author of "George Page of Branford, Conn. and Some of His Descendants") and Margery Page Vance. I have Margery's Page records which she shared with me several years ago before she died in 1989. [Edith Moyer Page also suspected that Ephraim Page m. Martha NORTON, but didn't write that in her book. She and I discussed the marriage after I provided her with info about the NORTONs and PAGEs in Greene Co., NY.] For about 25 years I have been actively pursuing the English ancestors of the immigrant George Page of Branford, which resulted in a book: "The Descendants of Robart Page of the King's House- The Probable English Origins, Ancestors, and Relatives of George Page of Branford Connecticut and Thomas Page of Saco in the Province of Maine" written and published by me in 1992. Further research resulted in an addendum to this book. Currently I have identified over 4500 Page descendants of George Page of Branford, and more are being identified each day. Descendants of George Page of Branford remain in the New Haven, CT area, but most migrated c. 1790 to Greene Co., NY, thence to Oneida, Madison, Otsego, Chenango, Broome, Livingston, and Yates counties in upstate NY. Further migrations over the years took the Page families to Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, and all points west. Ephraim Page together with his wife and her brother migrated to the area to the west of Greenville, Greene Co., NY. Probably the present-day town of Norton Hill is named after her family. Here are my notes about Martha (Norton) Page: She was the sister of Eli Norton whose name appears near Ephraim Page's name in the Tax List of the Old Town of Coxsackie on 12 June 1787. Coxsackie included what is now the towns of Durham, Greenville, New Baltimore, Athens, and Cairo, in Greene county, New York. Martha, wife of Ephraim Page, together with Sarah, the wife of Daniel Page and Lydia, the wife of Wm. Barker and a few others, signed the Covenant articles for the church in Greenville on Wednesday, May 19, 1790, in the presence of Rev. Berian Hotchkin [p. 7, Records of the Presbyterian Church in the town of Greenville, Greene County, N.Y., transcribed by The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and edited by Royden Woodward Vosburgh, New York City, 1920, found in the L. H. & G. Room under F129G715G7]. This proves that Martha was still alive in 1790 and still the wife of Ephraim Page. Therefore her husband was probably NOT the Ephraim Page who m. Sally Judd in Branford on 28 October 1784. The William Barker, Jr. was the ancestor of the Barkers of Marshall Twp. near Deansboro for which the Barker Rd. and Barker Road Cem. are named. The family was from North Branford, Conn. (as was the family of Ephraim Page). A William Barker was granted one square mile in the northwest corner of Totoket in March 1687 ["Hist. of North Branford", p. 8]. On May 5, 1811 Martha Page was dismissed from the church at Greenville "to the churches at large", meaning she was still alive and was moving west with her married children [Records, Op. cit. p. 53]. She is possibly buried in an unmarked grave in the little Barker Cem. in Marshall Twp. Oneida Co., or in Madison Co., NY, where her other children lived. Here are my notes about Elon NORTON [Daniel & Sarah (Stone) Norton, Daniel Norton & Sarah (Brasdley) Norton. Elon Norton m.(1) Chloe Page, the daughter of Ephraim and Martha (Norton) Page, probably in Greene or Madison Co., NY. He was named after his uncle., Elon, who was b. about 1739 and d. of dysentery on 30 Sept. 1756. Elon m.(2) Martha Page, sister of Chloe. Martha m.(1) Elon's brother, Isaac Norton, in 1784 probably in Greenville, Greene (Then Albany), NY. Elon was a signer of the petition, as was his brother Isaac. He did not appear in the 1810 census of Greenville. Elon was the builder of the second meeting-house (church) in Greenville in August 1800. I visited the area looking for the graves of PAGEs and NORTONs, but did not find them in the Greenville Cem. across the road from the church (built by Elon Norton, but rebuilt) or the old cemetery in Norton Hill. I do not know exactly where Ephraim Page or the Nortons lived, but it was near Norton Hill and the large estate nearby. Any information you can provide about the NORTONs of Norton Hill, Greene Co., NY, would be appreciated. I do have Martha's ancestry back into England, but NOTHING about her mother except that she was named Bethia. This is surprising after so many years! Thomas Norton probably met her while he was attending Yale in New Haven, from where he graduated with an A.B. degree 1723. Do you have a more current e-mail address for Bob Norton who was at the University of New Mexico? George W. 3. Hello Folks, I'm new to this list; but have several ties to the NORTONs of Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. I'm seeking info about the subject people and their ancestors, with little info to offer. Their daughter, Emma Norton, b. 19 May 1874, came from Guildford, New Haven Co., CT. She is no doubt descended from the Nortons of Guilford. Her father, Philo Norton, lived in Madison, Conn. Her mother died quite young and Emma lived with relatives in Stony Creek near Branford, CT, where she grew up and m.Harry William Page in June 1897. My direct descent from a Norton was through the marriage about 1750 of Martha NORTON, b.c. 1732 in Guilford(?), to Ephraim PAGE. She was the daughter of Thomas NORTON, b. 1 Oct. 1704 in Guilford and his wife, Bethia UNK. He attended Yale A.B. degree 1723 and lived in Guilford, CT. [See Conn. Families Vol. II, p. 667.] Her brother was Elijah "Eli" Norton. Eli was on the 1787 Tax List of Old Coxsockie, NY but did not sign the Petition of March 18, 1792, Protesting the Validy of the Prevost and Seaton Patents. Coxsackie included what is now the towns of Durham, Greenville, New Baltimore, Athens, and Cairo, in Greene county, New York. I would appreciate any specific info about Martha's birth or marriage, or her parents.

Surnames: Norton, DeForest Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Qi3.2ACIB/1683 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on Hannah Norton, Rufus Norton, Laura and Franklin Norton who were in the Rufus and Eunice DeForest household in Newtown, Fairfield, Ct. Census for 1850. Hannah was 22, Rufus was 5, and Laura and Franklin age 2. Since the boy was named Rufus, I assume that Hannah Norton is a DeForest, possibly a widow living with her parents with her three children. I also find Franklin again in the 1860 Census, this time in New Haven County, Ct. with his grandparents, Rufus and Eunice DeForest, but not as a Norton this time so it looks like he was adopted by his grandparents. His mother, Hannah is gone as well as his two siblings. If anyone can help me trace this family I would greatly appreciate it!
