    1. [NORTON] James Norton Family
    2. HI I just joined the Norton Surname List. Here is a little background on my Norton ancestors. The first Norton, in America, in my line, was James Norton; he and his wife Ann <Dolan> Norton arrived in America in 1848 with four children and settled in Lebanon Springs, New York, for ten years and then James moved his family to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. James Norton was born 1812 and Ann Dolan was born 1813. Both were born in County Roscommon, Ireland. According to their son James C. Norton's bio, they were from <this was sent to us and they could not make out the town> Cue......?? or Coo...?, Athlone, Roscommon, Ireland. We wish, we knew what the spelling of the town was, but so far, we haven't been able to find out what it was. These are the children of James and Ann Norton: Matthew b. 1835, Roscommon; d. 27 Jan 1926, Galesburg, IL spouse: Mary Coffey.........married 26 Jan 1863, Knox County, IL Roseann b. 16 Dec 1837, Roscommon; d. 29 Oct 1908 spouse: Michael O'Connor.........married 1 Jan 1862, Galesburg, IL Maria b. 1839, Roscommon; d. spouse: Edward Ryan .............married 3 April 1861, Galesburg, IL James C. Norton b. 15 Nov 1847, Roscommon; d. 8 Feb 1923, Crete, NE spouse: Margaret E. Sisk............married 16 Aug 1874, Cook County, IL Catherine b. 1850 Columbia Co, NY; d. 13 Oct 1883, Galesburg, IL spouse: Daniel W. Flynn........married 20 Jan 1870, Galesburg, IL Charles b. 1854, Columbia Co, NY; d. 1906 spouse: Elizabeth Mackin married......... 12 Apr 1877, Galesburg, IL Louisa b. 1858, Galesburg ; d. 1956, Galesburg, IL spouse> Fredrick G. Burtt.........married 1890, Knox County, IL There were three more children: Patrick, Delia, and John, who James and Ann lost as infants we think, but we don't know.........we only saw their names listed in Ann Norton's bio. James Norton 1812; d. 13 Sep 1874, IL Ann Norton 16 Jun 1899, Galesburg, IL <Her father was Timothy Dolan> James Norton was a farmer, his farm was located in Henderson Township, Knox County, Illinois ---------------------------------------------------------- We have Mathew Norton's Naturalization petition of Intention: Norton, Mathew -- 23 Oct 1858; Intention; origin: Ireland; Port of Entry: New York -- 3 July 1858; emigrated at 13 years of age: Witnesses: Jas Norton, A. A. Smith We thought, we would learn where the James Norton family came from with this information, but only the country was mention. Does anyone know, where I would search for more information My line of Norton comes through James C. Norton. He moved his family to DeWitt, Saline County, Nebraska, 1879 and later move to Crete, Saline County, Nebraska. I have a bio on him, that tells his story. We have quite a lot of information on James Norton and his family in Galesburg and would love to share this information with his descendants. AND we are always looking for knew information on this line of Nortons. Thanks, Mary Boudreau

    3. Bethia Norton, b. c. in Guilford(?)*, CT, was the daughter of Thomas Norton (b. 10 Oct 1704 in Guilford, CT- d. 8 Sep. 1768 in Guilford, CT) and his wife Bethia Unk. who d. in Guilford on 28 Sep. 1776. The children are I believe they were born in North Branford, but I have not found proof! Does anyone have documentary evidence of when and where their children were born? A Bethia Norton m. Jonathan Barker in Branford, New Haven Co., CT on 12 May 1788. [Branford Vital Records, Vol. 3, p. 385.] Another Bethia Norton m. Deacon Pelatiah Leete, III in Guilford, CT on 10 or 17 June 1767. [Guilford Vital Records, Vol. 2, pp. 168 and 246.] Deacon Pelatiah Leete, II d. Oct. 13, 1768 in his 88th year; i.e. b.c. 1680 [Guilford Vital Records Vol. 2, p. 145] Deacon Pelatiah Leete, III, d. May 28, 1786 in his 74th year, i.e. b. c. 1732. [Guilord Vital Records, Vol. 2, p. 188] It seems to me that the Bethia Norton who m. Deacon Pelatiah Leete, III in June 1767, when he was about 35, may not have been the daughter of Thomas Norton, and that his children may have been b. in nearby North Branford, not Guilford as some suppose. I know Bob Norton stated in April 2000: " ... Bethia's siblings were: Ashbell Jedidah Zeruiah (Zermah?) b. 1753 Elijah Benjamin Martha Thomas III b. abt 1732 All were born in Guilford, CT. She is my 3rd cousin, 7 times removed. " The above Martha Norton is my 4th paternal great grandmother, who m. Ephraim Page of Branford and North Branford in (North Branford) and migrated with him and several other Norton cousins to Freehold Twp., Greene Co., NY before 1787. Benjamin was a Lt. from Branford during the Rev. War, after which he went to VT. Thomas III died and was buried in Branford on 4 May 1798. Ashbell m. Submit Wheadon of Branford, and died and was buried in Branford on 12 Sep 1799 Elijah "Eli" went to Freehold Twp., greene Co., NY with the other PAGEs and NORTONs. Jedidah lived in Middletown, CT in 1771. GWP

    1. [NORTON] Check local times: Family Tree Special, History Channel Saturday
    2. George W. Page
    3. A mailing list posted this blurb about the program -- all the more reason to watch! I believe this program was shown last year, but I plan to tune in again. "DNA technology has added a new aspect to genealogy. On Saturday, April 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. CT) on The History Channel a two-hour special follows a group of Native Americans, who turn to ancestral DNA in an attempt to win tribal recognition from the government. Actor William Baldwin and Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace trace their family trees and a British historian traces two deadly genes through the European royal family to solve a decades-old mystery surrounding Queen Victoria." Description from the History Channel website: Benjamin Bratt narrates a 2-hour special that combines the history and mystery of names with a genealogical search. Traveling from ancient China to medieval Europe, from Africa to the Wild West, we search through slavery, the Indian Wars, and the great wave of U.S. immigration. As actor William Baldwin and "Braveheart" screenwriter Randall Wallace trace their family trees, we learn the genealogist's tools and look to the future. Can we move beyond written records to prehistoric times? >Regarding the Family Tree Special on the History Channel, Saturday, April >06, 2002, 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM, >Here is what Robert McDougle sent: >"My TV schedule shows this program on from 9 to midnight. >Now, I'm on satellite, not cable, so the schedule might be different but >I suggest you check your TV schedule."

    3. Bob Norton & the list, I have NORTONs on Long Island around the same time. Phoebe Norton married Daniel ROBINSON 6 Jan 1753 at Millers Place (perhaps in Smithtown), near to Brookhaven. Their son Jonathan Robinson (born 4 Jul 1754, at Miller Place) is my ancestor. I think there was also a daughter named Jemima who married Benjamin Raynor in 1777 (both persons noted as "of St. George Manor"). I have never been able to connect Phoebe Norton Robinson her to any Norton family. Has anyone come across a daughter Phoebe Norton born around 1730? 1. [NORTON] Please Be Safe Driving - Read On!
    2. Katie Going
    3. Hi! Everyone...this is from a friend of mine in the DC area....I urge you to listen and pay attention to its message. - Katie Going This is an actual true story and not one of those Internet stories that are passed on and on. This actually happened to one of my friend's daughter. Her daughter, Lauren, is 19 yrs. old and a sophomore in college. This happened to her over the Christmas/NewYears holiday break. It was the Saturday before New Year's and it was about 1 PM in the afternoon. Lauren was driving from Winchester, VA to visit a friend in Warrenton, VA. For those of you who are familiar with the area, she was taking Rt. 50 East towards Middleburg and then was going to cut over to I-66 via Rt. 17. Those of you who aren't familiar with this area, Rt. 50 East is a main road (55 mph and two lanes each side with a big median separating East/West lanes), but is somewhat secluded, known for it's big horse farms and beautiful country estates. Lauren was actually following behind a state police car shortly after she left Winchester and was going just over 65 mph since she was following behind him. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. My friend and her husband have 4 children (high school and college age) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a gas station, etc. So Lauren actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called #77 on her cell phone to tell the dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there were 2 police cars, one unmarked behind her and one marked in front of her. The dispatcher checked to confirm that there were 2 police cars where she was. There wasn't and she was connected to the policeman in front of her. He told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later, 4 police cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground ... the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. Thank God Lauren listened to her parents! She was shaken up, but fine. I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should NEVER pull over for an unmarked car in a secluded area. In fact, even a marked car after dark should follow you to a populated area. Apparently police (this is the good part!) have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call #77 like Lauren did. I am so thankful that my friend was sitting at our book club meeting telling us this scary story, rather than us at her house consoling her had something tragic occurred! Be safe and pass this on to your friends. Awareness is everything!
