I am searching for information on the ancestors of Abigail NORTON who married Jeremiah Norton in NY (Whitehall?) 1796. She was born aug 1777 and died in 1845 in Breckinridge Co KY. I have seen an on line posting that her dad was WM Norton and her mom was Dorcas NORTON. No parents shown for William but Dorcas is listed as daughter of Prince NORTON and LOVE NORTON. These Norton's amaze me for staying basically within their own family lines which makes things very confusing at times. However I am stuck. Can anyone help Prove or Disprove the parents of Abigail and possibly help me work this line back further? Thanks, Pam
Once again I am in search of Norton "cousins" who are descendants of Jeremiah Norton b 1810 Whitehall NY d 1898 Breckinridge County KY md Elizabeth Robertson. Jeremiah's dad was also named Jeremiah. Scott, Can you tell me any more about WILLIAM NORTON whose descendants were living in Horry Co, SC? We have still not gotten to SC to look further for DR. SAMUEL EDWIN NORTON'S parents, but hope to do so during the year. Samuel had an elder brother named WILLIAM who was said to have been a seaman of some sort. WILLIAM would have been born sometime before 1816 when SAMUEL was born, and he could have been named for the father, as I still don't know the parents' names. Common names in the family were KATHERINE, ANNE, WILLIAM, JOHN, JAMES, SAMUEL, WALTER and CHARLES. There was at least one set of identical twins among SAMUEL's family. Fingers still crossed. One of them I know was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. On the usgeweb.com site it shows that David Owen Norton m Lucy McCraw (some say McCraw and some say McGraw) in OLD 96 AND ABBEVILLE DISTRICTS, SOUTH CAROLINA - MARRIAGES - 1774-1890. Different family sources say that David was born in SC, NC and VA. The same goes for his children. He was supposed to be a reverend at Village Creek, Jefferson Co. He is buried in Russelville, Franklin County, Alabama. John Fletcher Norton ran a freight line from MO to TX and Oklahoma and also ran a trading post in OK. John Norton was listed as a Postmaster as was his son David Owen Norton. David Owen Norton was also listed as a Lawyer. Henry Wilson Norton was listed as a Sheriff and his son Henry Malone Norton was very well educated for the times. This info. is from census records, family sources, books, and post! al info. Quite a bit of the Nortons had dark hair some curly with blue eyes. Other odd names or nicknames in the family are Minor as a name and Doc as a nickname. Does any of this fit?

Visit www.nortonfamily.net for all the details. Fletcher and Wesley is used in this family frequently (almost exclusively). There are two possible explanations. 1) This family was very close to the Methodist church. John Wesley is of course, the founder in England. Fletcher is another famose methodist in England. The use of Fletcher here is quite tenuous, but Wesley is common with the family in my line, (David Norton Jr, John Wesley, Henry Fletcher) with James Nortons family and with William Nortons family in SC. 2) The second reason the family may use Fletcher relates to a possible link with England. The father of this family in VA was known as Christopher. However, none of his children named anyone Christopher. Family traditions point to Capt William Norton as the father and he used Christopher as a disguise. His sons kept his history and name secret, but the grandsons gave use a lot of clues. Fletcher Norton, speaker of the house of commons during the Revolution was Capt William Norton's brother. Capt William himself was Capt King George's personal yaght. If this is true, they had a mighty reason for hiding his true identity. John Norton of Bourbon and his brother James were very close. James was very active in KY as an Indian fighter and I think he lost his first wife to Indians. I know fromthe census records there is an oldest son, but we have never had a name. James lived deep in Eastern KY. The relationship of names is very close for our families. The 1st son of James is a very good fit. South Carolina. One of the Norton brothers, William settled in Horry, SC his decnedents mostly stayed in Marion, SC next door. Do you know where the Owen family comes from in SC? In VA at this time, there is a Norton family in Loudon until 1790, Fluvanna until 1788, Rockingham until 1788, John Hatley Norton on the coast and another in Pittslyvania. I am familiar with the Rockingham, Fluvanna, John Hatley and Loudon Norton families. Of these the only place I can fit your John Norton is the oldest son of James, but it is a perfect fit. He may not of used his mothers name because she was gone almost immediately and he was raised by Sarah Spencer Norton, wife of John Norton and by James new wife. Mary Norton is the matriarch of this family, married to Christopher/Capt William? She lived to be very old and was a big influence on the family. I estimate the father died around 1788 possible in Bourbon, KY or Fluvanna , VA. Everything is quiet about this father. Although his 5 sons all fought in the Revolution, he is not mentioned. Patrick Henry gave him a land bounty in Fluvanna almost certainly for his war effort and he lived 10 miles from Thomas Jefferson. The father is a great enigma at this point, but we are closing on him. Lincoln County is southern middle TN. Any reason for a Norton from Bourbon, Greenup KY to go down there? Scott Norton

I believe they were in Lincoln, TN. I found this tax list and thought it might have to do with my John Norton because his son John Fletcher Norton married a Stafford and her grandfathers name was William Stafford. FAYETTE CO., KY TAX LIST 1788 NORTON, John STAFFORD, Martin STAFFORD, William I am not sure of his year of birth. On the 1850 census (Greene County, MO) his age is 61, on the 1860 (Parker County, TX) census his age is listed as 73 and on the 1870 (Parker County, TX) census it is listed as - sorry I can't seem to find it at the moment. I figured his birth would be from 1787 - 1789. I am sure all 3 census records are of the same man. My John Norton had several grandsons named James and some with the middle name Wesley. I only mention this because I have seen other Norton lines with the names Fletcher and Wesley.

I didn't have enough info. at the time to even speculate as to whether there could be a connection and was hoping to get more info. before e-mailing you back. I have found some interesting similarities between our families. This is what I have on my family so far: John Norton born in VA abt. 1789 married Mary W. Owen of South Carolina and is the daughter of David Owen and Lucy Mcgraw. Maybe John had relatives in South Carolina or vice versa? Dick Magnum Norton (I haven't proved this one it came from someone else) Mary Ann Norton (not sure about this one either also from someone else) Henry Wilson Norton abt. 1818 David Owen Norton abt. 1817 John Fletcher Norton 10-16-1819 Serena Frances Norton 11-20-1822 Thomas W. Norton abt. 1829 Lucretia Norton abt. 1830 Martha E. Norton abt. 1831 Emeline M. Norton abt. 1833 Catherine Norton abt. 1835 Sarah Ellen Norton abt. 1839 There could be more children as there is a seven year span between the older and younger siblings. They lived in TN, MO, TX, OK - I believe that most of the children were born in TN but a source I have states that some of them were born in Alabama. It was referring to a census record that showed the birth place as Alabama for John Fletcher Norton but I haven't located that one yet. The one I have shows he was born in TN. I may have more info. but don't have time to look right now. Let me know if you think there could be a connection. You may email me directly at sharglove@hotmail.com Thanks, Sharon Glover
