Moriah Missouri" from pages I copied. This is all it says: "Henry Norton was born in Indiana son of John Norton. He was married August 3, 1812 at Pendleton County, Kentucky to Miss Betsy Ann Wright, daughter of Samuel Wright. They were parents of James Baker, Samuel Jackson, Nancy, Delia, John, William H., and Polly Norton. Henry died in February of 1831 at Grant County, Kentucky, which was formed from Pendleton County, he is buried there, after his death, the widow Norton and family moved westward, "Betsy Ann" died in Adams County, Illinois." This book speaks also of James & Tilitha (Davis) Norton (son of Henry & Betsy); William M. & Nancy (Sandlin) Nortin (son of James & Tilitha); and Oscar & Tessie (Louderback) Norton (son of William M. & Nancy). Plus has 3 family offshoots of these. William M., Nancy, Oscar, and Tessie are buried in Mt. Moriah, MO. James Baker and wife moved to Mercer County, MO from Lee County, Iowa and I believe Tilitha is buried there. I did find your website after I posted. Not sure why the book says one, seems like this information got passed down father to son but don't know. Oscar and Tessie are my great grandparents. Sincerely, Carrie

    1. [NORTON] re: Lillina Norton
    2. Dear Bill, Lillian did not have a brother. This is well documented. In the 1870 Census, Edwin, age 50 his wife Amanda age 48, daughter Onie age 24, Annie age 22 and Lillian age 12, were all living in a boarding house that they ran. (see 1870 Census, Boston, Suffolk Co., Ma., Ward 10, Roll 646 pg. 357) His eldest daughter Emogene and husband Emilo Castillo and their son Edwin, were also living at the boarding house, and so was William Baldwin, Annie future husband, married 1872. Onie's is AKA Annie Bartlett Norton. Lillian graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1876. "Not many days later Amand and Lillian left Boston for New York" for lessons with Madame Maretzek. Onie had become Mrs. George Walker, Annie had married William Baldwin and Edwin went to go live with the Baldwin's. This information from "Yankee Diva" pg. 27. What do you have on your Frank Butler Norton? DOB, place, siblings, wife, children death? Debby

Henry Norton returned to England in 1657 and died in Kent, Hodmersham, England 14 Aug 1659. It's highly improbable that they shipped his remains back to Maine for burial. I'd be very interested in any primary source from George that says otherwise. His daughter Elizabeth married Sylvester Stover and the Stover family seems to have kept better records than most of the Nortons of this period. Are "Henry, George,Joseph and Meiam, Josiah" all children of George's or is this your line from them? It's unclear from the way you wrote it. I have a fair amount of data on Henry going back several generations. He was a first cousin of Thomas Norton of Guilford and a grandson of Thomas Norton, M.P., the infamous "Rackmaster General of London".

For my families lore to be true, I need Lillian to have a brother named Frank Butler. All the posts that I read just mention sisters. I looked at the census data, 1860 shows the family living in Farmington with Lillian being 3. By 1870 it appears that something happened. I see Edwin living with Annie Baldwin in Boston. I assume they are the father and daughter, but I don't see any mention of the rest of the family. So, short question to long story Anyone know if Lillian had a brother named Frank Butler? Thanks Bill

    1. [NORTON] Re: NORTON-D Digest V02 #90
    2. Hello, My apologies. Nathaniel Nortons birthday was 1762 and Hannahs was 1780. I do not know Nathaniels parents at this time. The Revoluntionary Pensions file states his mother is living with him in 1829 but gives no name. I am working on some new business plans at the moment and have not gone further to check out this lead. Other surnames in this line are Simpson and Brooks. My ancestor is Nathaniels son Rueben born 22 May 1812. Nathaniels son Ivory married Hannah Sawyers neice, I read. This is my fathers, fathers side. On my fathers, mothers(Harbours) side we also married into the Sawyer familys, Fox, Small, Bryan(de Brienne), Bray, Richardson, Creighton, Haas, Witt, Cobb, Yeaton, Millard, Davis and Arrowsmith. Nathaniels DOB is 1 Aug 1872 born Sanford , York County, ME m.31 Mar 1796 Hannah Sawyer DOB 26 Apr 1780 of Wells ME. They married in Limington, York County, ME and lived there the whole time. They is information listed in several books: Early Families of Limington Maine by Robert L Taylor, Heritage Books pub. 1991 pages 245- 247, DAR Patriot Centennial Edition page 2163, Genealogical Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files Vol III: N-Z by Virgil D White page 2517 and more. The first book I mentioned has lots of info in it. It lists the children and who they married and even grandchildren and their marriages in some cases. It also has dates. I do not have all the answers about the de Norvilles or I wouldn't be posting on a query board. All the info I have is very confusing when trying to figure out the sons and fathers that settled in my ancestors area. The George, William, Henry and Thomas and also John and Walter are de Norville sons (Walter most probable in my line) that I have found in my search so far. Other early immigrants are Robert and Richard. They are listed in a Grant by the New England Council 2 Dec 1631. Walter (Lt Col.) and Henry are listed as going to York Cty Maine. Walter is written as the founder of York Me in the book, History of York, ME. The book Genealogical Guide to the Early Settlers of America by James Savage also has info on Nortons as does several sites on the web. The Vineyard Net has lots on Nortons but I cannot identify my line there yet even though the Abstract of Rev War Pension Files pg. 2517 states Nathaniel is of the MA line. Since Nathaniel was born late 1700s and the early immigrants came to first MA (as early as 1629 per the Savage book)and then to York County ME I am supposing for now that I am missing around 4 or five generations. I have several gen. charts from others of my line but cannot prove or disprove their info at this time. They have Walter as my ancestor and it does give me places to look when I am searching. The American Genealogist Vols 16, and 17 or 18 have articles from one who has traced the family. I have just found this info also and have not gotten it to check it out yet. Hope I have answered your questions. I am not the most organized person in the world but I try. Regards, Nancy Norton-Nix nncynix@aol.com

I don't have anyone by that name in my data. I am also looking for a Varnel Norton, born c 1840. He may have been in the 17 Consolidated Texas Dismounted Cavalry, Co. K. I have heard that those men came from Smith, Nagadoces, Red River, and Cherokee Cos., TX. I have not found him in the census for 1860 nor after that in any location, so I cannot verify that this is the Varnel that I am looking for. Varnel's father, Cornelius, was in Campbell Co., GA in 1840 and 1850. After that, he disappeared from the census and other records. Also his wife, and maybe one daughter besides Varnel. Anoter son of Cornelius, also named Cornelius, is said to have gone to TX. I think that I found him in Wood Co., TX in 1900. Two grandsons went to TX, Charles Chesterfield Norton and William Obediah Norton. In 1900 Charles Chesterfield Norton was located in Camp Co., TX with his family. In 1900, 1910, and 1920, William Obediah Norton was located in Wood Co., TX. Good Luck. If you find that you are related to one of these, let me know. Mona

    2. Nancy: One of the most interesting genealogy queries I have ever seen. Do you have the birthdate and place, date of marriage, list of childen, etc. for deNorville's son, grandson, great-grandson, etc.? Neither does any else. Who was Nathaniel's father? Please say it is only a typo that Nathaniel's wife (Hannah Sawyer) was nearly 40 years younger than him. When and where were they married? Which of the four (brothers?) Thomas, William, Henry or George are descended from? Are they sons of Nathaniel? How big is the gap from Nathaniel? You have taken some mighty huge generational leaps of faith. I don't know what to call what you have here, but it is not genealogy.
