I have two questions regarding this family and would appreciate any answers or comments. (1) How certain are we that this Francis was identical with the Francis Norton, son of William and Dionysia / Dionis of Sharpenhoe, Bedfordshire, mentioned in William's 1622 will? (2) What evidence do we have that identifies Dionysia, the wife of William Norton of Sharpenhoe, as a CHOLMELEY and how well supported is the Cholmeley family's connection to the royal Plantagenet family? Any information on these two questions would be greatly appreciated.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: NORTON, WOODWARD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Qi3.2ACIB/1780 Message Board Post: Seeking ancestors of William W. NORTON b. 1790-1800 in Connecticut. Possibly lived in New York early. By 1823 was paying taxes in Bracken Co., KY. In 1826 married Elizabeth WOODWARD. By 1833 moved to Oldham Co., Ky then to Jefferson Co., KY around 1838. Disappeared from Jefferson Co. in 1848. Elizabeth listed as widow in Bracken Co. in 1850 census. Can't find William in 1850 census. However, he turns up in Bracken Co. tax records in 1853 living away from family and is recorded as still living in land records up to 1856. Next land record in 1866 states he is deceased. Don't know where or when. I can't connect him to any other Nortons in the area and there are lots of them. My hunch is a close relative or his father was named Silas. His third son (my GGrandfather) was named Silas Woodward Norton. His first two sons were named William and Joel (after Elizabeth's father). I can't find a Silas that closely related in the Woodward family. I have tried many avenues to find William's parents. Now I'm back to square one, who was Silas named after? Family legend has the family related to the Nortons of Bennington, Vermont. But that family doesn't seem to have a stray William. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Barbara

    3. I think the theory that Elizabeth's surname was ISAAC- she name her first born Isaac - It was common to give a child the maiden name of the mother- I only have one child for them, Isaac NORTON b 3 May 1641 Tisbury, Dukes, MA d 1723 Edgartown, Dukes, MA md c 1663 Tisbury, Dukes, MA TO Ruth BAYES bp 1 July 1643 Tisbury, Dukes, MA d ..... " Nicholas NORTON and Elizabeth were my 10th gr grand parents - IF and I say IF Desire NORTON born 1670 was a daughter of said Isaac 2) NORTON and his wife Ruth BAYES- Any one care to elaborate on that? Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com Nicholas Norton, born 1610 in Broadway, Somersetshire England, immigrated to Massachusetts in 1635. He first lived in Weymouth, MA and his first child Isaac was born in Weymouth circa 1641. He moved with his family to Martha's Vineyard, MA. His story and family data are recorded in great detail in Banks History of Martha's Vineyard. Banks does not provide the surname or parentage of Nicholas' wife Elizabeth. Recently I have seen reports that Elizabeth's surname was Isaac, daughter of Joseph Isaac. I have seen this reported here on rootsweb, on genforum and on familysearch. 90% of the scores of listings for Elizabeth Isaac report that she was born in 1612 in Weymouth, MA. There were no Europeans in Massachusetts until 1620. This identification of Nicholas Norton's wife is highly doubtful. 1. [NORTON] NEW & IMPROVED IGI ON FAMILYSEARCH.ORG!
    2. Regi Milan
    3. Dear Listers.... I only subscribe to 3 mailing lists, so if you subscribe to others in addition to one of the above, please pass this important information along: You may have recently noticed the familysearch.org site was having some frustrating problems these past 3 weeks. Well, there's a very good reason why and I'm sure you'll be very happy to hear it! I currently serve as a family history consultant for the LDS Church and here is the memo (in part) we received about the recent changes that took place on the site. "A new version of the International Genealogy Index (IGI) is now available on www.familysearch.org, the LDS Church's Family Search Internet Site. This new version contains the following enhancements: --Additional Names - More names have been added to the index. These names were received since the last release in January 2000. (Reminder that this does not mean the database is complete. They are still playing catch-up on some records, so keep checking back). --Regular updates - The index will be updated regularly as new information is received. No longer will the wait be the usual 3 years for an update. Note: For those individuals you know you do not have Internet access and visit a local LDS Family History Center to review the IGI, etc., please let them know that the Internet's version of the IGI will be more updated than the Centers will. Not all centers have Internet access and still rely on the typical 3-year updates for their information. --Individuals linked as families - Some names are linked into families and can be displayed on family group records and pedigree charts (previously offered only in the Ancestral File). The number of linked individuals is relative small, but is expected to grow significantly in the future. You can also download family group records and pedigree charts. --Additional Event Information - All events that were in original user submissions are now displayed and can be used as search criteria. --Improved searching - You can now search the index by given name, surname and state, and more types of events, even across regions. The processes used to find individuals in spite of spelling and other differences in the name have also been improved. --Information to describe the source - When you display an individual's records, you will see messages that describe the source of information. Also, the batch number and film number searches have been simplified." FOR LDS MEMBERS ONLY... --Ordinance information soon to be available - Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will soon be able to view ordinance records in the IGI on the familysearch.org Web site. This service will entail a special registration process which will require certain membership information to gain access to this sacred data. Watch for ward and stake announcements about this in the next few weeks. I know what the requirements are, but have chosen not to publicize it here to do my part in protecting these holy records. Well, that's it! Enjoy the new and improved familysearch.org and happy hunting!
