Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Qi3.2ACIB/1819 Message Board Post: This is an open invitation to all Norton's to join the Norton DNA project. I'm looking for CT Norton's from Sharpenhoe, NY Norton's and Massachusetts Norton's to join. http://www.nortonfamily.net/DNA.htm We have 7 samples in and have matched 3 families! What DNA can do for your research. ================================== 1) Do you suspect a connection but can't prove it? DNA testing can lock down that connection. We've done this with 2 of our families so far. 2) Are you completely blocked? If we can get samples from the families who know their roots, we can establish family signatures so that others can match. For instance, we have established a signature for the David, James and John Norton of KY 1800's. Any Norton who matches this signature can be assured of his family history. The same holds true for the other Norton lines. I would like to establish a signature for the Sharpenhoe Nortons and Irish Nortons as well as the York Nortons. The test is easy, just a q-tip rubbed inside your cheek. The cost is 33% less than Family Tree DNA published rates with our family discount. contact Scott Norton at snorton@nortonfamily.net or visit the DNA Project web site. http://www.nortonfamily.net/DNA.htm

George Norton was born March 6, 1817 in or near Wolcott or Cheshire, CT, and was orphaned at an early age. He was raised by his guardian, a Col. Pond. (a relative of George's mother?) 1838, he moved to Leyden, Lewis County, NY. About 1876, to Boonville, Oneida County, NY. His obituary stated, at his death in 1890, that he was the last of 9 children. My next step is to see if I can locate his parents. I am not surprised that many left CT and went west. George left as soon as he reached legal age!

I've been working on getting back another generation for a long time. Unfortunately, I have no information regarding any of George's siblings. Being the last of nine children, George was obviously the youngest, and an orphan, so he may not even have known all of his siblings. I suspect that most, if not all of them left Connecticut, but I have no evidence of this.

    3. Steve Johnson posted some info on Rhoda Norton -b. 1801], who married Dudley Nowlen in Mentor, Lake County OH in 1820-- and Isaac A. Norton [b. 1799]...who married Rosetta Howe [aka Brown] in Cornwall in 1827. These two are supposed to have ancestral lines in Litchfield CT. They are believed to be related. In reply.... The History of Wolcott, CT [1731-1874] by Sameul Wolcott, shows a man named Zebul Norton b. about 1761 in Wolcott, New Haven County [later renamed Litchfield County] CT. He married his cousin, Rhoda Norton. This Zebul traces his ancestry back through David and Suza Bishop Norton Joseph Norton and Mary Champion John Norton and Hannah Peck John Norton and Hanna Stone Thomas Norton [see histories of Guilford, CT] This Norton ancestral line begins with Thomas and Grace Wells Norton, who came from England to Guilford CT in 1639. Many of the Norton descendants lived in Litchfield...and several went to Ohio. I'd like to hear more from those of you tracing descendants of Thomas Norton--especially those who migrated to New York, and then to Ohio. My own line is through: Harvey Stillman Norton [1828-1903] Lauren Norton [b. 1797 NY...moved to Geauga County OH] David and Dinah Welton/Wilton Norton Ozias Norton and M. Although the NORTONs of Litchfield Co. CT, particularly in Goshen, seem well described, many of the descendent lines don't appear in print. In particular, I'm trying to find out which family of NORTONs Rhoda NORTON (b. 1801) and Isaac A. NORTON (b. 1799) came from. They settle during the 1820s in what is now Lake Co. OH and are both buried in Mentor municipal cemetery. Isaac A. NORTON married Rosetta HOWE (alias BROWN) in Cornwall in 1827, and Rhoda NORTON married Dudley NOWLEN in Mentor, Lake Co. OH in 1820. Isaac and Rhoda are likely to be either brother-sister or cousins. --- Steve Johnston
