    1. [NORTON] 1600s/VA/OldRap/SC/1800sMS/Smith/Simpson Counties
    2. Hello, Re: 1600s in Old Rappahannock Co., VA and 1800s in Mississippi shown below Specifically regarding family groups of: SULLIVAN/ SWELLIVANT/SWILLIVANT/SULLIVANT, BAKER, KELLY, CREIGTON, CLARK(E,) BURRAGE, NORTON, MAJORS, LENTON, WORKMAN, WIGGINGTON/WIGGINTON, ROBERTS?, GEOFFRIES/JEFFRIES/JEFFREYS (with some of these mentioned only once below and some mentioned more extensively.) and connecting or possibly connecting with family groups of: DONIPHAN, PARTRIDGE, JENNINGS, PAYNE, ROBINSON, WILLOUGHBY, JORDAN, MOORE, UNDERWOOD, MYRICK, HERRINGTON, GRANTHAM, PARKER, LEWIS, EARLE, BAZAR?, PIERCE, STUCKEY, etc. I am writing regarding 2 lines of pursuit regarding SULLIVAN that may/or may not be directly connected to each other and are in some way related to my KELLY, NORTON family group in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia and the other SULLIVAN group may or may not be related to my family group in Smith and/or Simpson Counties, Mississippi. There is the SULLIVAN/SULLIVANT/SWELLIVANT/SWILLIVANT family group of early 1600s in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia that connects with my KELLY, NORTON and probably DONIPHAN, PARTRIDGE, JENNINGS, PAYNE, ROBINSON, WILLOUGHBY, JORDAN, MOORE family group out of England in the early and mid-1600s into Old Rappahannock County, Virginia and, specifically, with the given name of Cornelius. And, in addition, I am looking to find if this SULLIVAN ancestral group from Cornelius SULLIVAN were the ancestors for the SULLIVAN family group also descended from later born Cornelius SULLIVAN men including a man named Cornelius J. "Conn" SULLIVAN, born: February 18, 1841 in Smith County, Mississippi, died: February 25, 1917 in Smith County, Mississippi, who married Jane WIGGINGTON/WIGGINTON, and he was the son of Mary "Polly" WORKMAN and Thomas S.? or J.?/Jefferson? "Pappy Tom" SULLIVAN, born: 1785 in Bishopville, (was this Sumter County?) South Carolina, died: June 10, 1855 in Smith County, Mississippi, son of Sarah "Sally" ROBERTS and John SULLIVAN, (RS,) I think but not totally sure at this point. This particular SULLIVAN family group was in the area of Simpson County, Mississippi that became known as the notorious "SULLIVAN'S HOLLOW," near Magee, Simpson County, Mississippi where my MYRICK family was located from the early to mid-1800s along with my HERRINGTON, GRANTHAM, STUCKEY, PIERCE ancestors with the family of my grandfather, James Martin "Jim" MYRICK, born: 1892, and his wife, Allie Artimissa PARKER, born: 1892 near Braxton, Simpson County, Mississippi whom is a descendant of the aforementioned JENNINGS, KELLY, NORTON, DONIPHAN, PAYNE, ROBINSON, WILLOUGHBY, JORDAN, MOORE family group and I am wondering if the SULLIVAN/SULLIVANT/SWELLIVANT/SWILLIVANT group that was with them in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia/Richmond County, Virginia area were the ancestors of the SULLIVAN family that was later in the same region of Simpson County, Mississippi and in Smith County, Mississippi where my paternal 3rd great grandmother, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS, born: 1821/22 in Covington County, MS, (one census says Alabama,) lived at least by the 1850 Smith County, Mississippi until at least by the 1870 Rankin County, MS census where she was found as the head of the household. Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS was the 2nd/3rd wife of Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER who was born in 1795 in Maryland and next resurfaces in 1830 Copiah County, MS census with either his 1st or 2nd wife and again there in 1840 census and by 1850 Smith County, MS census married to Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS. It is possible that his 1st wife was Sarah "Sally?" BAZAR whom is recorded as marrying a Jeremiah PARKER in 1822 in Jefferson County, MS, (formerly Pickering Co..) I am looking to find out information on 3 men named Cornelius SULLIVAN and John SULLIVAN and Dennis SULLIVAN with spellings of SULLIVAN and SULLIVANT and SWELLIVANT and SWILLIVANT being used. They may have actually been related to my ancestral grandfathers, Patrick NORTON and/or (Captain) John KELLY and his parents, Matthew KELLY and Penelope "Nelly" NORTON, aka Nelly KELLY, who was the daughter of Patrick NORTON and his son, Thomas NORTON. In info that I have there is mention of Patrick NORTON's late wife, Margaret. Is it possible that this Margaret was a SULLIVAN/SULLIVANT/SWELLIVANT/SWILLIVANT and related to Cornelius, John and Dennis???? Or, if not, a BURRAGE, KELLY or MAJORS? << SULLIVAN, John and Cornelius are listed in 1635 as settlers, in Virginia land records. The latter, possessed of considerable property, died in 1672, leaving legacies to his "countrymen" Patrick NORTON and John KELLY. >> and how does William MAJORS connect with this family of SULLIVAN and the NORTON - KELLY family? << William MAJORS was a witness on Cornelius SULLIVANT's will Dec 1672--19 Nov 1673 in Va Co VA William MAJORS, more than likely the same above, was witness to will of Dennis SULLIVAN who had a son Dennis and Daniel SULLIVANT, wife Joane, executrix, daughter Sarah, w/o Henry LENTON. >> Partick NORTON's will was proved in old Rappahannock Co., VA on 7 Nov. 1688 and it mentions Patrick NORTON's late wife Margaret, son Thomas , not yet of age, and Nelly KELLY. Witt. Ed. GEFFERIES (JEFFERIES?), (probably also seen as JEFFREYS,) Wm. BELL, Eliz. CARMELL, (possibly CORNEL.) and possible connection to a John DOWTY, (might also be DOUGHTIE.) There is also the will of Cornelius SWELLIVANT of old Rappahannock Co., Will and Deed book 1 , proved 19 Nov 1673. In info on old Rappahannock Co., Virginia there was a notation dated 1689 that Penelope KELLY, (aka Nelly KELLY, aka maiden name of Penelope NORTON, aka Nelly NORTON, admn. of Matthew KELLY, dec., had married Lawrence BAKER, (as her 2nd husband.) I do not know if Margaret ? and Patrick NORTON had any other children than Penelope "Nelly" NORTON/Mrs. John KELLY and Thomas NORTON. In the will of Henry CREIGHTON, dated 26 Jan 1676, proved 6 Sept. 1677, a deposition of Patrick NORTON who gives his age as 35 or there abouts. If he knew how old he really was, he was born ca. 1641. In the will of Joan CLARK, dated 3 Mar. 1682, proved 3 May 1683, deposition says Edmond NORTON age 30 or there abouts (born ca. 1652) Is he a bro to Patrick NORTON? (I also have descent from Robert CLARKE and wife, Jean ?, and he was born in the area that was to become Edgecomb County, North Carolina in about 1688. Their descendants married into the ETHERIDGE/ETHRIDGE family group as well as their daughter that I descend from, Hannah CLARKE, married Jacob UNDERWOOD. Is there any connection with this man named John CLARK mentioned above?) Then the will of Cornelius SWILLIVANT. What is his relationship to the man named John BURRAGE mentioned in his will? As well as the NORTON and KELLY families. How were they related to the SULLIVAN(T)/SWILLIVANTs? Any information on this John BURRAGE? Any additional info on the aforementioned Cornelius SULLIVAN/etc.? and the NORTON, KELLY, etc.? Thanks. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick - Barnett

    1. [NORTON] James Norton Family came to America about 1849
    2. Hi Listers I am descended from James and Ann (Dolan) Norton. Who arrived in America about July 3, 1849, at the Port of New York. They soon settled in Lebanon Springs, Columbia County, New York (near Albany). After about ten years they migrated and settled in Henderson, Knox County, Illinois (near Galesburg). Children of James and Ann Norton: Mathew, Maria, Roseann, James, Charles, Catherine and Louisa My great grandfather James C. Norton married Margaret Sisk, in 1874, Cook County, Illinois and lived in Knox County, until they moved to DeWitt, Saline County, Nebraska, in 1879. Children of James C. and Margaret Norton are: Charles, Blanche, Rose, James, Abbey, Matthew, George, William and Margaret My grandfather Charles Henry Norton married Martha Elizabeth Newman around 1904. They eventually settled in Omaha, Nebraska. They had 12 children: Lawrence, Harold, Anna, James, Thelma, Theresa, Rita, Mary John, Rose, Charles and Robert. We would love to make contact with our NORTON cousins to help us learn more about our ancestors. We have hit a brick wall. We know that James and Ann Norton came from County Roscommon, Ireland, but that is all we know about where they lived in Ireland. Thank you and Happy New Year.............. Mary Boudreau

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Qi3.2ACIB/1804.1.2.1.1 Message Board Post: A cousin sent me this post to take a look at. We have been researching the Nortons for a while and I thought I would post a curve here and see if it helps. We have a Giles B Norton born in 1794 in South Carolina. We believe that he is from Pendleton Dist SC.. Have found a land record that we believe he witnessed on Christmas day 1811(I believe) also on the land deal was Henry Norton who I believe is Giles father. In 1812 Giles is in Champaign Co OH where he signs up for the war of 1812. He is later in Logan CO OH has land with a David Norton. In about 1830 Giles relocates to Cass CO MI, where he stays til he dies. In all the searching I have done I have determined that there are indeed 2 Sampson Nortons and they are constantly being mixed up. I have pension records for a Sampson Norton showing that he signed up for war of 1812 in Champaign CO OH and serves in TN. This is the same Sampson Norton(this same Sampson is in Tennessee on the census of 1820 or 1830, would have to check my records) who I believe goes to Arkansas? then MO. I also have a record of a slave agreement between Sampson Norton and his father in law. I believe this Sampson Norton to be the brother to Giles, both sons of Henry Norton, son of William and Jemima. To throw more in the mix the sons of Jemima's brother end up in Logan county OH in a place called Pickrelltown. The children of Giles are: Sarah Norton b 1818 Champaign Co OH Sampson Norton b 1821 Logan OH William Norton b 1823 Logan OH Mary Norton b 1825 Logan OH Anna Norton b 1828 Logan OH Henry Norton b 1831 Cass CO MI Melissa Norton b 1834 Cass Co MI Nathan Norton b 1836 Cass Co MI David Norton b 1840 Cass Co MI There is another family of Nortons who are in Logan CO OH and move to Cass Co MI. I believe that family to be of Richard Nortons line brother to WIlliam Norton of Pendleton. Would love to exchange and discus the Norton lines more.
