    1. Re: [NORTON] Norton DNA Project
    2. David Norton
    3. The entire lineage must be male. Only males have the "Y" chromosome, so your mother did not receive her father's "Y" chromosome, only her brothers did, and their sons and their sons... The results only are applicable to the male line. It cannot be applied to other surnames than the male line. For instance, it has no relation to your mother's father's line, or to your father's mother's line, etc. There is also a test for the female line which can be taken by either male or female, of mitochondrial DNA which one receives only form one's mother. This DNA comes from your mother's mother's mother's..... and so is not associated with a surname because the surname changes with each generation from mother to daughter. But it can be used to help establish relationships. If you are interested in other surnames, you must find either all male or all female lineages back to the ancestor of interest (depending on whether that ancestor is male or female). Hope I've made it clearer (clear as mud perhaps :) David Norton ----- Original Message ----- From: <KAYNLINN@aol.com> To: <NORTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 24, 2003 7:05 AM Subject: [NORTON] Norton DNA Project > Does the entire lineage have to be all male for this to work? 2. Does the entire lineage have to be all male for this to work? My great grandmother was a Norton, so would it work on one of her grandson's, or would I have to locate male descendants from one of her brothers? Also, can the same results be used to participate in other surname DNA projects? Thanks, Kay

    3. I was have just received the results back of my DNA test. It is very interesting. Check out the Norton DNA Project page: http://www.nortonfamily.net/DNA.htm My DNA markers are not up on the site yet, but I think I will be family#8 once they are up and I am closest (much much closer) to family#6. My family and family#6 together would make the 4th pair of Norton lines, each with different DNA markers, meaning that each of the 4 Norton lines on the page are unrelated (within the last couple thousand years, anyway). Another thing I got from my test was the ethnic origins of all the other matches in the database, whether or not they were surnamed Norton. All the readin I have done seems to indicate that the Norton line I am a member of is most likely to come from the Celtic peoples (Irish, Scots-Irish, Scotch, Welsh or english descendants of the celts that inhabited England before the saxons invaded England. The other 3 lines on the Norton DNA project seem more likely to be descended from the germanic invaders of europe (angles, saxons, franks, normans,etc.). I hope that some Nortons descended from David Norton in the Mars Hill area of N.C. would get tested as I trace my family back to that area with no documented connection to that family. I am also curious about whether any of us southern Nortons are related to the New England Nortons. I hope some of them get tested. By the way, the surname test is of markers on the "Y" chromosome, which is passed from father to son to son.... So a male Norton of your branch of the family would need to be tested. One warning, the test won't tell you exactly "how" you are related. So you may find that your Joebob is related to someone else's Jimbob, but whether they are brothers, cousins, 3rd cousins is something that will still require good old geneology techniques. But may eliminate false trails and put you on the right trail at least. Hope this encourages some of you to try the DNA test. ----- Original Message ----- From: <k1norton@adelphia.net> To: <NORTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 23, 2003 11:57 AM Subject: [NORTON] Re: Miles F Norton Abt 1820 > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Qi3.2ACIB/1804.1.1.1.1.3 > > Message Board Post: > > We have reached the point where we are most interested in the DNA project.
