Hello Folks -- I'm trying to trace one Aaron NORTON. His descendants show up in the Western Reserve section of Ohio (Geauga County) about 1820. I'm fairly certain that his ancestors came from New England. They apparently lived in Hartwick, Otsego, NY for a while. There were other folks from Otsego County, NY who showed up in the same part of OH. Perhaps they migrated together. Much of the info I have came from the LDS web site, where there exists a maddening mixture of first class genealogy, and unsupported conjecture. So I don't trust what I have. Aaron NORTON apparently married Lydia RUTTY in Pittstown, Rensselaer, NY about 1798. Their eldest child, Lydia, was born in Pittstown in 1800. Child #2, Sawyer H Norton, was born in Hartwick, Otsego, NY in 1803. Child #3, William Aaron Norton, was born in Pittstown in 1806. Child #4, Horace, was born in Hartwick in 1808. I'm not willing to believe that they commuted between Pittstown and Hartwick. I am willing to believe that someone slipped some erroneous data into the IGI. Lydia NORTON married William Wait AYERS in Chester, Geauga, OH in 1824. From here to the present, the genealogical data are pretty solid. No further problems. The problems exist going back. I can't find anything about Lydia Rutty. There were lots of RUTTYs in Killingworth, Middlesex, CT, but I can't find a Lydia who fits. I found a transcription of Barbour's VRs of Killingowrth, Connecticut, but nobody named Lydia who was born about 1775-1780. Not even a Lydia ?? who married a Rutty, and became a widow. She was supposedly born in Pittstown, NY, or maybe Pittsfield, Berkshire, MA. I'm inclined to believe that the latter is a mistake. There were a bunch of Aaron NORTONs in CT. One, who was about the right age, was the son of Aaron and Martha (Foote) Norton. He was born in Goshen, Litchfield, CT, and ended up in Ohio. However, it appears that he made a stopover in East Bloomfield, Ontario, NY, rather than Hartwick. The elder Aaron was a Rev War vet, buried in Rice Cemetery, in East Bloomfield, NY. Another Aaron NORTON was born in 1751 in Durham, Middlesex, CT. He became the second husband of Eunice Kelsey. [She had been married to Samuel RUTTY -- in Killingworth, Middlesex, CT -- is there a concidence here?? Locale and surname?? Perhaps.] This Aaron died in Hartwick, NY in 1813. He also had a son named Aaron, but not until 1797. As they say, close -- but no cigar. Another Aaron NORTON was born in 1782 in Bristol, Hartford, CT to Aaron and Rhoda (Hinman) Norton. The father was the son of Isaac and Mary (Rockwell) Norton, born in Haddam, Middlesex, CT in 1749. I haven't found any mention of a wife or children for Junior. A fourth Aaron NORTON was born in 1750 in Guilford, or maybe in Middletown. I have nothing further from him. I am hoping that some kind soul has done some research on these various Aaron NORTONs, and might be willing to share the results with me. Thanks in advance for your help. Bruce Bardes Cincinnati

Our Norton has been tested for DNA already but we know nothing before @ 1830 in Richmond County (Thomas Norton and Sarah Blue). They moved to Robeson County after that. So far the group we have tested with are not a match for us and we are wondering where the heck our Nortons came from. Could you be them? Look forward to hearing from you Ruth and William Norton

Other surnames are in the album too and many with just first names or unidentified. Contact me if you'd like more information. Thanks Donna Pfitzner

The Norton Family Reunion will hold their annual meeting in Farmington, Maine, Saturday, August 16, 2003. Richard Norton, the reunion secretary, sent invitations and directions for driving to those showing interest in the past. But all are welcome and urged to attend. Richard shoulders this responsibility alone, and is very helpful to first time attendees, his e-mail address is flash@maine.rr.com , his home address is 24 Cobbert Rd., Portland, Maine 04102. The museum was established in memory of Lillian Norton, called Madame Nordica, by her sisters Imogene del Castillo, Annah Ione Walker, and Annie Baldwin . It is a lovely museum situated on beautiful grounds. The invitation reads: "The descendants of Nicholas Norton of Edgartown will have their annual meeting in Farmington, Maine on Saturday, August 16th starting at 10:30 A.ME., at the Nordica Museum. Bring a picnic lunch and any genealogical information you would like to share with others. There are picnic tables on the museum grounds. If the weather is inclement, we will meet at the Fairbanks Church. For the first time visitors, the Museum is on the right side of Holley Road, approximately one mile form the intersection of Routes 4 and 27, going north from Farmington. The reunion is always the third Saturday of August." I will not be attending this year, but wish you all a marvelous time. Joan Norton Mullen, Wichita, Kansas

Bob, Scott and everyone concerned with the early SC NORTONS: I realize your WILLIAM NORTON died too early to be the father of my ancestor, but possibly there is some connection, if any of these names sound familiar. You may be bored with my inquiries by now, I am stuck trying to find the parents of my ancestor, Dr. Samuel Edwin Norton (b 1816 somewhere in SC possibly Williamsburg or Georgetown Count d.1 Oct 1877 in Gainesville, FL. ...ALSO with conections in CENTRAL SC . He was a medical doctor who received his degree from what is now the University of Pennsylvania medical school. I do know the names of his older siblings, but he was about 2 years old when he was orphaned and raised by "relatives." Older siblings in this order, I believe: KATHERINE NORTON m. a MANN ANNE NORTON m. LEE RENTZ (and had a daughter named MARIA who married a LEE HONOUR) WILLIAM JACKSON NORTON (we don't know who he may have married...was rumored to have something to do with a ship and Baltimore, Maryland. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. As far as I know, the family was not Quaker, but Episcopalian. However, there could have been some Quaker connections in Philadelphia and nearby Delaware/Maryland. (the medical school had a record of SAMUEL EDWIN NORTON but gave no clues....) Thanks so much, Carole (granddaughter of ELDRIDGE GREENWOOD NORTON)

As you may have found, some Norton's are more elusive than others! We believe that Giles Norton is the son of Henry Norton and grandson of William Norton, Pendleton District, SC. Based on what I found this week in Salt Lake FHL, I have serious doubts that the William Norton of Pendleton County, SC is related to Mercer Norton. The Mercer Norton book was published in 1983 (I believe) and I suspect is out of print, It is about 2 inches thick and you would probably find it in most genealogy libraries. I copied the first 30 pages or so last year and will have access to that when I return to Palm Spings, CA on 12 August. Would be more than happy to share material with a William Norton descendant. Which son or daughter of William/Jemima does your wife come from? Bob Norton
