    1. [NORTON] William Norton & Nancy Shelton
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Qi3.2ACIB/1992 Message Board Post: How many children did William Norton (b. 1802 Yancy Co., NC) and Sarah Shelton (b. 1807 Shelton Laurel, NC) have? William is one of the ons of David Norton and Sarah Shelton, and I have commonly seen him and Catherine listed with only two children: Catherine (my ancestor b. 1833 m. Charles Gunter) and David (b.1827). However, I have also seen them listed with seven other children: James (1829), William, Hackley(1837), Robert (1841), Arta (1844), Joseph (1846), and Melinda (1849). I am curious because William (b.1830 d.1923 m. Judith Gosnell) is also distantly connected to the Gunter/Gosnell/Chandler line (in more than one place), so I am trying to verify what I have seen on various sites. Please contact me if you know these claims are true.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Qi3.2ACIB/1967.2 Message Board Post: Charity, I have all of the info you are looking for!! I'll send it by e-mail rather than post it here since it is rather lengthy. I know Scott Norton replied to you and suggested a DNA test. I am hoping that you can find a male descendant from this line who will have the test and help establish this line. I had the test done and have not been able to find a match that verifies the line. I am descended through Gideon Norton, Barak's older brother. Where do you live. There is a big Norton reunion each year in Cashiers, NC and most of the people are descendants of Barak. Looking forward to swapping info with you.

    1. [NORTON] The Norton Name
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Qi3.2ACIB/1990 Message Board Post: The Norton DNA project has shown us that there are probably hundreds of Norton family lines. Last names were handed out around 1086 when the Doomsday Book was being compiled. Norton is literally "North town". There are today 70 Norton villages in England alone. If there were three brothers in a village called North town, one brother might be called Cooper because he made barrels, one brother Smith because he was a blacksmith and the other Norton. So brothers might all have different last names and there might be 20 unrelated men in one village that got the last name Norton. In addition there are at least two noble Norton lines. Le Signeur do Norouile who came with William the Conqueror with the family seat at Sharpenhoe, Bedford, England. A branch of the Conyers family in Yorkshire, England took the Norton name about 1340 and from this line comes Fletcher Norton, Lord Grantly. There is also a Norton family in the Southwick, Hampshire area from very early (about 1300) Robert de Norton. We invite you to look at the Norton DNA page and we are looking for more Nortons especially from CT. http://www.nortonfamily.net/DNA.htm

    1. [NORTON] ISAAC NORTON
    2. Sherone01
    3. I am researching ISAAC NORTON with very little information to go on. Here is what I have: ISAAC NORTON was killed 27 OCT, 1914 in Welch, Craig County, OK by a tornado. He was married to ELISA Dewell, who died in 1911, and is buried in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Jackson County, IA. ISAAC's obituary states that he lived in Maquoketa, Jackson County, IA and was considered an old settler of the County. He was listed to have lived in the vicinity for thirty years (Emeline, Canton, and Monmouth). He lived in Kansas City (MO/KS?) around 1908. He moved to Craig County around 1910. He had one son that I know of. His name was OSCAR NORTON. OSCAR NORTON had two sons that I know of. They were WESLEY NORTON, and HOWARD NORTON. I can't fit him into the rest of the NORTON line that I have. My G-Grandfather, WILLIAM HENRY SHERE (b 1855 in Erie County, NY) married EVA ADELLA NORTON (b 1851 in Erie County, NY). They were married in Erie County, NY. Her father was ANSON NORTON (b 1799 in New Marlborough, Berkshire County, MA). I would like to find where ISAAC NORTON fits into the NORTON line. I originally thought ISSAC was the son of ANSON NORTON but have not seen any evidence of that. Brad

Others date from 1859-61 .the 1859 letter is posted to Madras and is posted from India Reform society and seems to refer to some sensitve political matters such as the Indian question, also a letter Norton must have written to the statesmen(a newspaper)Also something called the Petty Jurors case and what seems to read as the Zanjure case(Zanjoni case?) with much government mentioning The name sir C>J>W>Bright comes up and letter is signed Dickinson. Another letter is form the House of Commons(1861)stating (my agent for Davisons affairs in Madras is Arbuthnotto whom you can pay £500.00 this is a fortune in India even today!!!!letter fromJames Clay) Interestingly ,friends it seems call him Jack An envelope (no letter inside)dated 1911 is addressed to Eardley Norton Calcutta so ,I guess this must be a close relative.I f anyone wants photo copies I guess I can arrange this.
