    3. In 1881 the Horsman family were at Thompson Street, Byker;  and by 1891 they were at 138 Raby St, Byker (where they stayed until at least 1911).  Could anyone suggest which church the children may have been baptised at, so that I can check them out when I am up in June. Equally if anyone spots any Horsman baptisms in Byker,  do tell me,  as city parishes do take a long time to trawl.   Thanks   Sue

    3. Hello Sue - the replies from Geoff Nicholson and Wyn are correct. People seemed to chose the church or vicar or minister they preferred. I grew up at 78 Raby Street and my grandmother lived at 132 Raby street. My mother lived in this area all her life, was born on Dalton Street, baptized at St. Silas church and married in Leighton Methodist on Heaton Road. My aunt (by marriage and not otherwise related) was born on Avondale Road, close to Raby Street, and also baptized in St. Silas even though Byker Parish church was much closer. Subsequently we attended Byker Presbyterian Church on Priory Street on a regular basis. I recall that, much the same as the present time, people chose their religious affiliation because they liked some aspect of a particular minister/priest and congregation.
