I'm no expert on the subject, but surely there was no such thing as an "Irish National" until 1922? Many Irish in the Northeast signed up for the war, in bodies such as the Tyneside Irish battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Strangely though, my great-uncle ended up in it but he came from Durham. Adrian
