Hello Listers I am seeking help in finding the ancestors of Thomas NEIL who married Isabella KIRKLAND in 1918. The marriage was by Certificate on 29 June 1918 in the Register Office in Tynemouth (Q2 1918 Tynemouth 10b 517). Both the Bride and Groom signed the certificate, indicating that they could write. Witnesses were John KIRKLAND & Mary KIRKLAND, probably the bride's younger siblings. Details from the certificate are: Bride Groom Name Isabella Kirkland Thomas Neil Age 27 34 Condition Spinster Bachelor Occupation Blank Shipyard Labourer Address . 51 Potter Street 13 Hugh Street Willington Quay Wallsend. Father's name Thomas Kirkland Samuel Neil (deceased) Father's Occ. Copper Works Labourer Bricklayer (Journeyman) Clearly, Thomas NEIL was born about 1884 and his father Samuel (bricklayer) would be born around 1850 to 1865 but no convincing match has been found in the 1891 to 1911 censuses for England & Wales or Scotland. Searches of the FreeBMD site and Scotland and Ireland sites have also failed to uncover any matching Neil (Neale, Neill, Niel, Neal) birth. There is a promising-looking census entry for Samuel NEALE, born Plumstead, Norfolk, age 24 in 1881 (RG11/5073/ Folio 27 page 45) and living in Wallsend but this man did not have a son named Thomas as shown by the 1891 census. I wonder if anyone on this List has connections to this Thomas NEIL family or has any information about the birthplace of Thomas. Any assistance would be most welcome. Regards Charles Atkinson.
