    3. Brett: It's a pity you don't give us references to your sources, as a lot of "information" which people have, or think they have, from so long ago turns out to be somewhat distorted, especially if passed down through several generations of a family in oral form. I wouldn't comment like this if it were not that your story of John Ogle's "fine effort to escape from a Thames hulk" sounds just like that sort of thing. I have tried to discover more about his father, John Ogle, who you say died at Rothbury about July 1837. If so, then he would appear in the NDFHS's index to ALL burials in Northumberland 1813-39, but he does not! What I also find suspicious is that there WAS a John Ogle buried at Rothbury on 7 July 1837 - but he was described as an "infant"! He was from Cartington, a tiny place, though with a ruined mediaeval castle, two or three miles NW of Rothbury, but within Rothbury parish. I would recommend a very open mind on this one, checking out every step of the way from original sources. As a guide (though not an original source and it always needs confirming and expanding) you could use the old IGI, now incorporated into the Mormon "FamilySearch" web site, to pick up the basics of the Felton baptism and to seek other family members. Now, the Doxfords. I hope I don't offend my Northumbrian friends by saying that to me, as a Co Durham lad, the surname Doxford means, not an ancient, though relatively obscure, family from Doxford, possibly from Doxford Hall, a "dot on the map" in North Northumberland, but the prominent and innovative family of ship-builders and of ship's engine makers, based in Sunderland, on the Wear in Co Durham. Again, however, my advice is, as always, to work back from the known into the unknown, keeping as open a mind as possible and accepting whatever you come across, whether or not it fits with your preconceptions. With that last piece of advice in mind, you may care to know, or may already know, that the Ogles have been for centuries a very extensive family of very wealthy, titled and very well-connected, Northumberland landowners, originally based on Ogle Castle (now demolished). They are fully described in various places in the 15-volume "New County History of Northumberland" and also in one of the two volumes of W Percy Hedley's "Northumberland Families". Can you also elucidate your comment that Jane Doxford was born in Felton (Felton parish?) in 1774 and then - what? - in Tynemouth in 1775. It seems the only thing she might have done in 1775 would be to be baptised, but it would be unusual for a baby born in Felton to be baptised in Tynemouth, so I have to ask how sure are you - and does it really mean "baptised"? I'm new to the List and hope that someone may be able to help me with some information on my GGG Grandfather, John Ogle, or any of his family. John Ogle 1802-1877 was a rather interesting fellow, having been condemned to transportation to Van Diemen's Land ( Tasmania) when he was 37, and putting up a fine effort to escape from a Thames Hulk he was held on whilst waiting for the voyage to the other side of the world. 9 years later, his wife and five children joined him in Hobart Town and waited for him to receive a Conditional Pardon. His spouse was - ROSANNA HUGHES b. abt. 1806 Scotland; d. 1851 Belfast ( Port Fairy ), Victoria, Australia Parents: JOHN OGLE b. abt. 1775 Felton, Northumberland; d. abt. July 1837 Rothbury, Northumberland; JANE DOXFORD b. 1774 Felton; Northumberland. 29 Jan. 1775 Tynemouth, Northumberland Siblings: JOSEPH OGLE 1800 - 1879 GEORGE OGLE 1805-1882 GRACE OGLE 1809 - ? - all from Northumberland If anyone can help, I'm also interested in JANE DOXFORD's possible relationship with the prominent Northumberland family, DOXFORD.
