Paul: It happens! We must all be open-minded enough to accept that it does, even to us! However, I have unearthed a lttle more Thornton information, in the form of a pedigree sent to me years ago by "a correspondent". It therefore does not have the provenance of a printed pedigree by Rev John Hodgson, and it does need checking, but it is still worth considering. It says there was a Henry Thornton, born at "Donkin's Ridge" in 1738, son of Robert (1704-1773) and his wife Jane (d Ewesley 1764). Robert was the son of Henry of Ewesley who had married at Netherwitton on 17 June 1700 to Jane Read (d Ewesley 1734). This Henry was the son of Nicholas (d 1700) and his wife Ann Swinburn (daughter of Sir John, Bt, of Capheaton), they being the tenth generation from Roger Thornton, the Newcastle Lord Mayor/merchant, who was himself the son of one Hodgkin (old diminutive of Roger) Thornton. I don't (yet) know where Donkin's Ridge is or was, but the Ewesley in question is no doubt the one just to the west of the B6342 Scots Gap to Rothbury road and now at the foot of the dam of the Fontburn resevoir, which was not built in the 18th century!
