I have found the marriage on the transcripts for Edmund Thornton and Lydia Gledson https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11099-100071-79?cc=1309819&wc=MMRX-YFL:n1824733230 Why would it state of this parish, if before and after marriage they were at Bedlington ? Paul
Paul: The statement "of this parish" would refer to one or other of the parties. There could be two such statements, one for the bridegroom and one for the bride, or perhaps there might be one single statement, "both of this parish". However, it could be that one of the parties, probably the bride, was "of this parish" and the other, probably the bridegroom, was "of the parish of XXX", where XXX could well be Bedlington (or anywhere else). You don't say in which parish they married. Netherwitton? Hartburn? Elsewhere? When they were of different parishes it becomes more likely that they married by Licence, and that is even more likely when they were from two different counties. Although these days Bedlington is definitely in Northumberland, at the time Bedlington parish was a detached part of Co Durham. Morning, the link to the marriage I posted in my last message was from Tynemouth Parish, it states beside both names 'of this parish' the marriage was by Banns, not licence as I would have thought if one party was from outside the parish. The obvious conclusion I can draw is that a sibling lived in Tynemouth and they put his/her address down as theirs.
There is one other option, I could have been following the wrong family for years and the Thornton's are nothing to do with me. Now that would just make my day.....
