Hi Heather The Newcastle Register Office's online index indicates that John and Dorothy married in the parish of St John. If you either order the marriage certificate from the General Register Office (google for address or follow the link on FreeBMD), or order the relevant film for St John's through the nearest LDS family history centre (see www.familysearch.org for addresses and for the film catalogue) you will obtain the name of John's father, assuming he provided the info. You could also check www.freereg.org.uk just in case they have transcribed the marriage -this volunteer project is still a work in progress. Have you looked for John in later census years for other clues, for example where he was born?
