Janita: Have you checked the likely period on FreeBMD to seek any marriages where the two surnames are any combination of Matthewson, Brown and/or Clark? That might get you started. My Grandfather always used the surname Matthewson and I've only recently discovered he was actually registered in 1881 in North Shields, Northumberland as JAMES Matthewson Brown. His mother is Isabella, no father on certificate. He next appears on 1881 census of North Shields, aged 5 days, mother Isabella Matthewson aged 31, blacksmiths wife but husband not at home. There are also two other children, Joseph Matthewson Brown, 1876, no father again but Isabella surname is Brown nee Clark and then Hannah Matthewson Brown 1883. No father on this cerificate. Anyone any ideas how to proceed? Any help would be appreciated. JANITA .. Please remember to snip most of the earlier message before you post any reply...... Thank you!
