Hi Gwyneth You say you may have found him buried in Jesmond Cemetery - what is your source for this? Brian -- Brian Pears (Gateshead)

    3. Edwin Dodds. I don't know if he transcribed the whole cemetery or not but he did write up "Notes additional to Gravestones" for Jesmond Cemetery of which I have a copy. Obviously a lot are pertaining to our family, some others he knew or knew of their families and he also links some 'notes' to other gravestones, and has notes from the Newcastle Courant. It makes interesting reading. ie Stone 768 - Jane Skeffington is linked to stone 734 Matthew S Dodds his aunt, also to stone 2096 J O Scott who married Charle's sister, Jane Skeffington Hancock. Also for Stone 768 he mentions Charles Hancock from London who died while on holiday - it doesn't prove he is there of course but it is the only lead I have so far. That is why I asked if Jesmond Cemetery records are searchable. Cheers Gwyneth Sydney PS I'm happy to search his notes if it helps anyone.

    3. Gwyneth: I have kept out of this discussion so far, as Brian seems to have it well in hand, but I should explain that I found it very vague when you mentioned "Jesmond Cemetery", as that term could possibly mean any one of three large cemeteries! One is St Andrews parish cemetery, to the east of the North Road (ie opposite the Town Moor). Another is All Saints Parish Cemetery on the north side of Jesmond Road and the other - and the one you are now referring to - is the (originally anyway) private cemetery, Newcastle General Cemetery, sometimes called "Jesmond Old Cemetery", on the south side of Jesmond Road. Only a few copies of Dodds' typescript still exist, the most accessible being that in Newcastle Central Library - or you may find that the SoG have a copy which you could look at if you live near London. For that reason the NDFHS re-published it on microfiche several years ago, and that is now available on CD or as a booklet - see www.ndfhs.org.uk for a list of their publications. Edwin Dodds was a friend of the likes of Herbert Maxwell Wood, the transcriber of most Northumberland and Durham pre-1812 parish registers. Wood was also the Secretary of the Durham and Northumberland Parish Register Society (DNPRS), hence all his MSS now in Newcastle Library as the "Wood Transcripts". Dodds fitted into all that because he owned a stationery firm, based on Newcastle Quayside, and supplied Wood and the rest of the DNPRS with the large amount of foolscap paper they needed, often with pre-printed page headings. Because Newcastle General Cemetery was a private one and was founded in the late 1830s, some 20 years before the Municipal Cemeteries Act, it tends to contain the graves of "the great and the good" of Victorian Newcastle, including any who are household names to this day - Fenwicks the store owners, Dobson the architect, Hancocks the ornithological collectors, founders of the Hancock Museum, etc, etc. It is still in use - Sid Chaplin the author was buried there in 1986. You might be interested in Alan Morgan's book "A Fine and Private Place: Jesmond Old Cemetery", all about the cemetery and some of those buried there (Tyne Bridge Publishing, the publishing arm of Newcastle Library, 2000: ISBN 1 85795 155 7, 80 pages, well illustrated, glossy paperback. Dodds' transcript was made about 1918 and so covers all stones which were there at that time. The burial registers, which will cover all burials in the cemetery, whether recorded on a stone of not, will be in Tyne and Wear Archives. 3. Gwyneth: The microfiche/booklet/CD is only available from the NDFHS, Percy House, Percy Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. For the book, while it is just possible the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery may have some copies for sale, your best bet would have been to contact (1) Newcastle Library (Avison House, New Bridge Street, Newcastle upon Tyne) or any bookseller (that is why I gave you the ISBN, which should enable any serious bookshop, anywhere in the world, to order it for you, if it is still in print). However, I doubt whether the book is still in print as it was published in 2000. The only Hancocks mentioned in the book are the naturalists.
