He married Ellen Pringle in Newcastle Upon Tyne I think the marriage was registered April-May-June 1925 – Inferred County Northumberland I have his family as Brother – John Mein and Sisters Hannah and Violet and possibly another sister. My understanding is he served in the 1st World War and was in the Coldstream Guards. Army Number 19010. I would dearly love to make contact with anyone in his family and my friend has no information and is seeking photos of her grandfather Robert Gibson Mein. 3. Margaret: Robert Gibson Mein's birth was registered in the Berwick Registration District, some time during the June Quarter of 1895. The reference and page are 10b 491, though that is only of use to the Registrar General's office in London and should not be quoted to a local registrar. The date of registration agrees with the birth date you supplied and this was the only Robert or Robert [-----] Mein registered anywhere in England or Wales at any time during 1895, so it seems we can be confident this is him. (source: Free BMD) Note that Berwick, although on the north side of the Tweed, is an English (Northumberland) town and its registration district covers most of north-east Northumberland. By far most of the population of that registration district lives in either Berwick upon Tweed itself or in its "twin towns" of Tweedmouth and Spittal, on the south side of the river, though there is a large, sparsly-populated, rural area in the rest of the district. Berwick upon Tweed is a garrison town, home to the ?Queen's Royal Borderers regiment, or whatever has replaced it in recent re-organisations, so there would seem a strong possibility that Robert Gibson Mein served in either that regiment or in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. 3. Margaret I have these people in my tree, but can't help with photos or military service I'm afraid. Robert Gibson Mein was a son of Francis Mein (1867-1903) and Mary Ellen née Gibson, formerly Gibson i.e. Mary Ellen Gibson had been previously married to George Gibson (1856-1888). The death date is given in Robert's probate record and you can order his will online (at least you can in UK - don't know about New Zealand). Howick is on the coast about 5-6 miles NE of Alnwick as the crow flies. "1978 - MEIN Robert Gibson of The Flat, Howick Hall, Alnwick, Northumberland died 24 February 1978. Probate Newcastle-upon-Tyne 22 March ... " [1]https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills The birth date is recorded in the 1978 death registration, so those dates are confirmed. Francis Mein and Mary Ellen Gibson married in 1892 (s: FreeBMD) in Berwick registration district, but the censuses show that Francis was born in Tweedmouth, Mary Ellen born in East Ord (west of Tweedmouth, they were there in 1901) and Robert himself was born in Tweedmouth. Both these, as Geoff says, are in Berwick RD but south of the river Tweed. Robert Mein's marriage to Ellen Pringle in 1925 is recorded in Tynemouth RD, not strictly Newcastle upon Tyne, although that district does cover areas of present-day Newcastle such as Walker and Longbenton. Otherwise could be anywhere between Newcastle and the coast (Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth etc). Robert, parent(s) and various siblings and half siblings can be found in the censuses in ... 1901 East Ord, Northumberland ... RG13 / 4846 / 11 / 13 1911 Scremerston, Northumberland ... RG14 / PN31138 / SN68 Hope this helps. Kath ------------------------------------------------ > Robert Gibson Mein born 21/4/1895 (possibly England). He died 1978 in Northumberland England.
