Albie: Having established that it is Thomas' marriage, census and death records which matter, let's look at those again. There should be no difficulty in finding many Thomas Gibson deaths, but it will be difficult to know which, if any, is of your Thomas. If he lived to 1813 then the first place to look is the NDFHS index to ALL burials in Northumberland (and there is another for Co Durham) 1813-37. If he is not there, then Free BMD should enable you to look for his death thereafter throughout England and Wales. Unfortunately ages are only given by FreeBMD after 1867 as that is what the GRO indexes do. The 1813-37 indexes were compiled from church etc registers and for that period the age should always be given. Searching the censuses is something best done these days via FindMyPast or Ancestry, but it may be useful to note that there are paper indexes, one district at a time, compiled by NDFHS members and still available for purchase from the NDFHS (see their web-site). They cover the 1851 census of Northumberland completely and the 1871 census for all the Tyneside area, including Tynemouth/North Shields, plus large tracts of the county in other censuses. The 1881 census has been transcribed and indexed by the LDS and is available, I understand, free on their FamilySearch web site. I am assuming that he was, in fact, baptised in Whittingham parish church, which would seem to indicate that his parents were not Presbyterians, Methodists, Roman Catholics or anything else. Another approach which may be worth trying, is to see whether he left a Will. Before 1858 proving Wills was a matter for the church and Durham University now holds the records of the Bishop of Durham's Consistory Court, which was the Probate Court for the whole of Durham Diocese (which included Northumberland). There is a detailed listing of all those Probate records on the web site of Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections and facsimile copies of all of them are now available on the LDS FamilySearch web site. It is important, of course, to bear in mind that he may have died in infancy or at least young. In that case, the only source might be the parish burial register. Note that locally, ages were given in C of E burial registers from 1798 onwards. Of course, one thing which should not be ignored is the possibility that there was a family gravestone in either Whittingham churchyard or at Tynemouth. Those at Whittingham have been recorded and transcripts are available to buy from the NDFHS (see the web site again). It might be more difficult to find one from Tynemouth for that period, as I think the Priory yard was being used as the local burial ground. It could be that N Tyneside Library would be the best place to ask about it. Gravestones and Wills are usually associated with slightly better-off families - you didn't mention where yours comes in the social scale, but with Wills, one estimate is that, during 1778-1803, 11% of those who could leave a Will actually did so. That is a much greater proportion than used to be generally thought. Thanks Geoff, I stand corrected as the phrasing of the question is wrong and I my inexperience obvious. I also did not say that despite much time spent, I could not find a Thomas Gibson, with or without a family, in any census in Northumberland with the correct or approximate birth date from Whittingham or any death notice that seemed applicable. The right question could rather be if there is any other way that one can get around these obstacles? Is it his later life you are interested in? Do you think he probably married in or near North Shields? If so, ,do you have any clue as to who his wife may have been - did she live to be in a census, for instance? Perhaps he is the Thomas Gibson who married Sarah Gilhespy at Tynemouth on 27 Aug 1816 or perhaps the Thomas Gibson who married Catharine Armstrong at Tynemouth on 9 November 1822 or even the Thomas Gibson who married Jane Dawson there on 16 January 1826 - or all three, or perm any two from three. I have looked only for Thomas Gibson marriages at Tynemouth (N Shields was in Tynemouth parish and is where Tynemouth parish church was/is) but there were others nearby, in Newcastle and at Longbenton, for instance. I can find no further information on this individual and help will be appreciated. Albie Gibson, South Africa .. Please quote the minimum necessary to put your reply on context. Thank you very much Geoff for the comprehensive and welcome answer! Thomas' brother James Gibson was a farmer on Brock Farm, rented from the Duke of Northumberland, a butcher and a ship owner from 1827 onwards. The family seems to be buried in the Preston cemetery and I now think that if Thomas did not die young in Whittingham that I must start with these two cemeteries?
