Phil: I'm not sure whether you will already have this information, or whether it is what you seek, but the parents you mention, John Mains and Ann Baxter, were married at Warden on 10 May 1767 (source: IGI). Warden church is a lovely little pre-conquest one without any large number of houses around it - Warden "village" is a district of very scattered houses, close to the confluence of the North Tyne and the South Tyne, or the "watersmeet" as they call it thereabouts. The best modern source for the history of Warden parish and for the histories of the various families who lived there, at least those which were moderately prominent, is the late Dr Mitchell's MSS. He was compiling an in-depth history of the parish when he died and his notes on the subject are now all with the NDFHS in their Percy House Library.
