    1. [NMB] Gateshead Methodist Circuit

    3. I just found by chance that FamilySearch has added the Baptismal Registers of Gateshead Methodist Circuit to their free site, but don't know when this happened. Unfortunately they label everything as just "Gateshead" with no reference to the Methodist Circuit. I am lucky enough to have my grandmother's Baptismal Certificate naming the Circuit but not the individual Chapel - she was born in Usworth. That is how I know these are the Methodist records. From Shoveller's List it appears that the Circuit included Blaydon, Chester-le Street, Gateshead, Jarrow, and Lanchester. The dates covered seem to be about 1837 to 1881, and you can get to them by searching Batch No. 102118-0, GS Film No 1040259 Adrian

    3. Adrian: Thank you for this note, which will no doubt encourage many to discover more of their Methodist families' past. To it I can add that the National Index of Parish Registers (NIPR) lists the earlier, pre-1837, (Wesleyan) registers as being in the PRO (now TNA), with microfilm copies in the usual places and that for that period (1812-1837) it was also included on the IGI. Hence it should now be available somewhere on the LDS site. The NIPR helpfully lists the following churches as being within that circuit at that time. In Co Durham: Ebchester and Newlands; Ebchester and Shotley Bridge; Gateshead Pipewellgate; Gateshead Fell; Gateshead Low Fell; Gateshead Low Team; Gateshead Fell, Sheriff Hill; Gateshead Fell, Wrekenton; Heworth, Bill Quay; Heworth, Carr Hill; Heworth, Felling Shore; Heworth, High Felling; Heworth, Windy Nook; Lamesley; Lanchester; Lanchester Annfield Plain; Lanchester Colliery Dykes; Lanchester Dipton; Lanchester Iveston; Lanchester Kyo; Ryton Crawcrook; Ryton Greenside; Ryton Woodside; Tanfield Burnopfield Sheephill; Tanfield Causey Row; Tanfield Shield Row and Kiphill; Tanfield Tantobie; Usworth; Whickham; Whickham Swalwell; Winlaton; Winlaton Barlow; Winlaton Blaydon In Northumberland: Ovingham Hedley; Ovingham Prudhoe. Where I have given two place-names for a church the first one is the C of E parish within which it was located and the second is the village etc where it actually was. I should also add that there were many boundary changes to this, and most, Methodist Circuits over the years. The Ryton district churches eventually became part of Newcastle West Circuit, for instance.
