Hi Heather, I had a look in Stanhope and Houghton le Spring but there doesn't seem to be a marriage in either of those places. As you say purchasing a birth certificate would be a good idea. I've just looked at the St John Chapel registers on Family Search and there are a number of babies baptised with Burtree as their abode-I noticed a few Marias too.I'd guess that this area was where she came from.
